1988년 5월, 실록의 푸르름이 절정을 이루던 어느 날, 도서관 창밖으로 내려다 본 캠퍼스엔 하얀 벚꽃이 눈처럼 휘날리고 있었다. 작년 말 대학원에 떨어지고 다음 시험을 위해 도서관에 처박혀 있던 나는 잠시의 한가로움을 잊고 화창한 봄기운에 취해 무작정 밖으로 나갔다.
교정을 거닐다 들른 학생회관에서 우연히 누군가 보고 버리고 간 대학신문에 나온 대기업 그룹 공채 광고가 문득 내 시선을 사로잡았다. 국내 굴지의 럭키금성(LG)그룹과 삼성그룹이었다. 작년 가을, 기업 추천서를 마다하고 취업을 포기하고 학업을 선택했었는데, 막상 대학원에 떨어지고 나니 갑자기 진로에 대한 걱정이 치밀어 올랐다.
나는 혹시나 하는 생각에 밑져야 본전 아닌가 하는 마음으로 두 회사에 모두 응모를 하였는데, 당시는 지금처럼 대졸 취업난이 심하지 않았던 때라 그런지, 두 회사에 모두 합격을 하였고, 어떤 운명에 끌린 것처럼 진학보다는 취업을 선택하게 되었다. 그리고 당시 면접과 합격 통지일자가 삼성보다 조금 빨랐던 이유 하나로 나는 LG그룹 연수원으로 가는 버스에 몸을 싫었다. 이것이 지금까지 10번의 직장을 옮기며 살아온 나의 도전의 역사의 서막이었다.
그렇게 LG전자 국내가전영업부문에서 첫 근무를 시작한 이래, 피어리스화장품(스킨푸드), 애경산업(화장품), 필립스전자(소형가전), 쟌퀼화장품(개인사업), HON(미니골드 쥬얼리), LG생명과학(LG화학 의약품사업부), 세라젬H&B(화장품), 종근당건강(화장품), AM H&B(화장품)를 거쳐, 지금은 은퇴 후 글을 쓰고 강의와 컨설팅을 하는 프리랜서로 살고있다.
어찌 보면 한 직장에 오래 머물지 못한 실패와 포기의 역사처럼 보일 수도 있겠지만, 영업과 마케팅이라는 분야에서, 그것도 한 산업 내에서의 이직이 아니라, 가전/화장품/쥬얼리/의약품이라는 전혀 다른 네 개의 산업 분야에서 끈질기게 승부를 해온 험난한 도전의 과정이라고 할 수도 있다.
도전!
도전은 언제나 내 인생을 따라오는 키워드(Key Word)였다. 아니 어쩌면 나의 인생이 항상 도전을 좆아다닌 것일지도 모르겠다. 한 회사에서 어려운 도전을 떠맡고 헤쳐나가서 이제 좀 편안할 수 있을 정도가 되면, 나는 또 다른 도전을 찾아 떠다닌 것일지도 모른다.
40년 지기 오랜 친구들은 나에게 직장 생활을 왜 그리 힘들게 하냐면서 이제 좀 편하게 살라고 자주 얘기해왔지만, 한 직장에서 가늘고 길게 살아온 그들이 어쩌면 성공자일 수도 있어 보이고, 짧고 굵게 여러 직장을 거친 나의 직장 생활도 스스로 후회롭지 않다면 나 또한 성공자라고 생각한다.
그러나 나의 도전에는 언제나 성공이 있었던 것만은 아니었다. 내게 큰 실패를 가져다준 도전은 쟌퀼화장품이라는 개인사업을 하였을 때였다. 그때는 대기업 물이 채 빠지기도 전에 성공에 취해서 내가 하면 뭐든지 다 될 것이라는 자만심이 남아 있었을 때였으니, 실패를 해도 당연한 일이었을 것이다.
이 첫 번째이자 마지막 실패는 너무도 썼다. 큰 빚더미에 모든 걸 버리고 죽음까지 생각할 정도였으니 말이다. 하지만 그 쓰라린 실패는 내 인생에 가장 소중한 밑거름이 되어 주었다. 실패가 있었기에 나는 내적으로 더 큰 성장을 할 수가 있었고 참고 인내하는 법을 배울 수도 있었다.
이제 나는 지금까지 나의 도전의 역사를 도전이라는 영어 단어 “CHALLENGE”로 하나씩 풀어나가고자 한다. 내가 여러 직장에서 변하지 않고 가져왔던 강점과 어려움을 해결해 나갈 수 있었던 마음가짐과 방법들은 모두 다음과 같이 “CHALLENGE”라는 단어의 이니셜 하나하나에 들어 있다.
Change 변화를 즐겨라
Hot Passion 뜨거운 열정으로 가슴을 채워라
Attitude 태도가 바뀌면 습관이 바뀌고 습관이 바뀌면 운명이 바뀐다.
Logic 논리는 신뢰다.
Learning 배움은 끝이 없다. 배우고 또 배워라.
Extraordinary 껍질을 깨야 세상이 보인다.
Never Give-up 절대 포기하지 마라. 끈질김은 생명력이다.
Goal 도착지가 있어야 이정표를 세운다.
Execution 실행에 집중하라.
아무쪼록 이 글이 점점 더 치열해지고 있는 생존의 밀림 속에 사는 나와 같은 직장인들뿐만 아니라 갈 수록 힘들어지는 자영업 사장님들 및 취업을 준비하는 대학생들 모두에게 힘과 용기가 되어서 인생을 도전할 수 있는 기회를 마련할 수 있기를 바란다.

It was a day in May 1988, when the greenery of the trees reached its peak. Outside the library window, white cherry blossoms were swirling in the air like snow across the campus. After failing to get into graduate school last year, I was cooped up in the library studying for the next exam. But for a moment, I forgot about my worries and succumbed to the allure of the beautiful spring weather, and I found myself stepping outside.
While strolling through the campus, I stopped by the student hall and happened to come across a university newspaper that someone had left behind. There, an advertisement for public recruitment by large corporations caught my eye—namely, the recruitment ads for Lucky-Goldstar (LG) and Samsung Group. Last fall, I had turned down a corporate recommendation and opted to pursue further education, but after failing to get into graduate school, the worry about my future career path began to rise.
Thinking “What do I have to lose?” I applied to both companies. At that time, the job market for university graduates wasn’t as difficult as it is now, and I was fortunate to be accepted into both companies. Guided by fate or some unknown force, I chose employment over further education. And so, simply because LG’s interview and acceptance notification came slightly earlier than Samsung’s, I found myself boarding the bus to LG’s training center. This marked the beginning of a series of ten job changes throughout my life, the dawn of my journey of challenges.
Starting with my first job at LG Electronics’ domestic home appliances sales division, I went on to work at Peeres Cosmetics (Skin Food), Aekyung Industrial (Cosmetics), Philips Electronics (Small Appliances), Janquil Cosmetics (Personal Business), HON (Mini Gold Jewelry), LG Life Sciences (LG Chem’s Pharmaceuticals Division), Ceragem H&B (Cosmetics), Chong Kun Dang Health (Cosmetics), and AM H&B (Cosmetics). Now, in my post-retirement life, I write, lecture, and work as a freelance consultant.
At a glance, it may seem like a history of failures or giving up—constantly moving from one company to another without staying long in one place. But in reality, it has been a tough and relentless journey, taking on challenges in sales and marketing, not within a single industry but across four completely different fields: home appliances, cosmetics, jewelry, and pharmaceuticals.
Challenge!
Challenge has always been the key word of my life. Or perhaps, my life has always chased after challenges. Whenever I found myself in a place where I could finally relax after overcoming a tough challenge, I would find myself seeking out a new one, driven by some internal force.
For years, my close friends have asked why I make my working life so difficult, urging me to take it easy. While they, with their stable and long-term positions, may seem like the successful ones, I don’t regret my own path of short, intense experiences across multiple companies. If I feel no regrets about my own career, then I too am a success.
However, not all my challenges led to success. My biggest failure came when I started my own business, Zanquel Cosmetics. I was still overconfident, intoxicated with my previous corporate successes, and assumed that I could succeed at anything. That arrogance led to inevitable failure.
This first—and last—failure was incredibly bitter. I ended up buried in debt, so overwhelmed that I even contemplated death. But this painful failure became the most valuable foundation in my life. It allowed me to grow internally, and I learned the importance of perseverance and patience.
Now, I want to unravel the history of my challenges through the word “CHALLENGE.” The strengths I’ve carried with me across various companies and the mindset and methods that helped me overcome difficulties are all captured in the initials of this word:
- Change: Enjoy change.
- Hot Passion: Fill your heart with burning passion.
- Attitude: When your attitude changes, habits change, and when habits change, destiny changes.
- Logic: Logic builds trust.
- Learning: Never stop learning. Keep learning and learning.
- Extraordinary: Break out of your shell to see the world.
- Never Give Up: Persistence is life.
- Goal: You need a destination to set your course.
- Execution: Focus on action.
I hope this story serves as inspiration and strength not only for office workers like me, living in the jungle of survival, but also for business owners struggling to keep afloat, as well as for college students preparing for their careers. May it give you the courage and opportunity to challenge your own life.
