아무리 나라의 대통령마저 자신의 이익을 위해 돈을 빼돌리고 추징금도 갚지 않으려고 하는가 하면, 대기업 회장도 세금을 안 내려고 편법승계를 하며 이익을 나눠 먹는 세상이라지만, 이 사회를 자세히 들여다보면 정직하고 착하게 살아가는 사람들이 대다수인 것이 사실이다.
뉴스는 착한 사람들을 조명하는 것보다, 자극적이고 흥미로운 이야기를 찾아 잘못한 이들을 더 크게 부각시켜, 이 사회가 마치 전부 그렇게 돌아가는 것처럼 오해하게 만드는 큰 잘못을 저지르고 있다. 그러다 보니 대통령도 하는데, 유명 연예인도 하는데, 나 한 명 더 한다고 어떻게 되겠어 하는 심정으로 부정직한 행위를 저질러서는 안 된다.
우리나라를 지탱하는 힘은 이름 좀 난 소수의 그들이 아니라, 이름도 모르는 대다수의 정직한 국민들이기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 우리는 모두 정직하고 소신 있는 태도를 가져야 한다. 나를 위한 정직은 내 인생뿐만 아니라 내 주변의 다른 사람들도 정직하게 바른 길을 인도하기 때문이다.
1988년 5월 대학을 갓 졸업하고 LG그룹 공채로 입사하여 연수를 받을 때의 일이었다. 당시는 LG그룹으로 채용되면 여러 계열사로 배치 받기 전에 약 2주간 수백 명이 함께 연수를 받았었는데, 그 중 일주일은 전국을 돌며 계열사 공장 투어를 하는 신나고 재미있으며 매우 큰 자부심을 느끼게 하는 시간이 주어졌었다.
아직 서먹했던 입사동기들과 여러 대의 관광버스를 나눠 타고 평택공장을 거쳐 청주 인근 호텔에서 첫 하루 밤을 지내게 되었을 때의 일로 기억난다. 당시 연수생들은 밤에 외부로 나가서 개인활동을 못하게 통제되었으며 특히 음주는 절대 금물이었는데, 한 무리가 호텔을 몰래 빠져나와 술을 마시고 들어왔다.
나는 그 때 마침 산책 중이었다가 호텔 앞 상점의 파라솔 의자에 몇몇 동기들 쪽으로 다가갔다. 마침 술 마시고 들어온 동기들이 무용담을 한창 자랑하고 있었다.
그 때 교육을 책임지고 진행하고 있었던 기획조정실 연수팀 사람들이 나타나, 그 자리에 있던 사람들은 전부 술을 마신 것으로 간주하고 모두 시말서를 쓰라고 하였다. 갓 입사하여 뭣도 모르는 모두는 어찌할 바를 모르고 한마디도 못하고 있었다. 결국 내가 참다 못해 말했다.
“술 안 마신 사람도 있는데 왜 모두 시말서를 써야 하나요? 난 쓸 수 없습니다.”
결국 난 진행팀으로 불려 가서 여러 쓴 소리를 들어야 했다. 단체활동이니 연대 책임을 져야 한다는 등, 혼자만 살려고 그러는 건 조직생활에서 좋지 않다는 등, 명령을 거부하면 퇴소 조치를 하겠다는 등….
하지만 난 끝내 시말서 쓰기를 거부했다. 솔직히 아깝긴 했지만 LG가 이 정도 회사라면 안 다니면 그만이라는 결심까지 그 때 했었다. 다행히 나는 별문제 없이 회사를 다니게 되었지만, 그들이 내게 어떤 나쁜 평점을 줘서 당시 내가 가고 싶었던 마케팅 부서가 아니라 영업으로 발령이 나게 되었는지는 지금도 모르는 일이다.
하지만 잘못된 행정이나 구태의연한 처리 방식, 시키면 시키는 대로 하라는 식은 예전부터 못 참고, 하고 싶은 얘기를 곧 바르고 정직하고 소신 있게 말하는 것이 내가 살아온 태도였다.
그래서 내겐 지금까지 따르는 사람도 많았지만 그만큼 나를 싫어하는 사람도 많았다. 그 바람에 나는 업적이나 성과와는 상관없이 정치적 헤게모니에 밀려 여러 번 회사를 떠나야만 했던 것도 사실이었다. 그러나 나의 이런 태도에 대해 난 지금도 후회는 없다. 그게 나만의 자기다움이기 때문이다.

No matter how much the president of the country embezzles money for personal gain and tries to avoid paying fines, or how big company CEOs use tax loopholes to pass on their wealth and share profits, the truth is that, if we look closely at society, most people live honestly and decently.
The media tends to spotlight the wrongdoers, searching for sensational and interesting stories, and exaggerating the actions of those who have strayed from the path. This creates the false impression that society operates in such a way, when in fact, that is not the case. Just because the president does it, or a famous celebrity does it, we must not fall into the mindset that it’s acceptable for us to act dishonestly as well.
The strength that sustains our country does not come from the few famous individuals, but from the vast majority of honest citizens whose names are not widely known. Therefore, we must all adopt an attitude of honesty and conviction. The honesty I show not only shapes my life but also guides others around me towards the right path.
In May 1988, shortly after graduating from university, I joined LG Group through their public recruitment program. During the initial training period, all new recruits were given a two-week training course, which included a week of factory tours at various affiliates across the country. It was an exciting and pride-filled time.
I clearly remember the moment when we, a group of new recruits, had arrived at a hotel near Cheongju after touring the Pyeongtaek factory. The training team had planned for us to stay one night at the hotel, but we were prohibited from leaving the premises for personal activities, especially drinking alcohol. Despite this, a group of my colleagues sneaked out of the hotel to drink and returned later.
I was taking a walk at the time and approached a group of my colleagues who were sitting under the umbrellas outside a shop in front of the hotel. They were boasting about their night out drinking.
At that moment, the training team from the planning and coordination office appeared and informed everyone that those who had been seen with the group would be assumed to have been drinking, and they would all be required to write a self-report. As a new recruit, I had no idea what to do, and everyone around me seemed too nervous to speak. Eventually, I could not hold back and said,
“There are people here who didn’t drink. Why does everyone have to write a report? I won’t write one.”
In the end, I was called in by the training team and was scolded harshly. They told me that as a group, we were all responsible, and that it was bad for the organization if I acted alone instead of taking responsibility with the others. They even warned me that if I refused, I might be sent home.
But in the end, I stood firm and refused to write the report. Honestly, it was a difficult decision, and I even thought that if LG was such a company, I might as well leave. Thankfully, I continued working there without any major issues, but to this day, I don’t know if I was given a poor evaluation, which led to my assignment to the sales department instead of the marketing department, where I had initially hoped to work.
But I have always been unable to tolerate flawed administrative practices or outdated methods. My attitude has always been to speak my mind in an honest and principled way, even if it meant I had to face uncomfortable situations.
As a result, while I have many followers to this day, I also have just as many people who dislike me. Because of this, I had to leave the company several times, not because of my performance or achievements, but due to political maneuvering. However, I do not regret this attitude of mine. It is simply part of who I am.
