CKD건강식품회사에서 화장품사업본부장을 했을 때, 나는 C화장품중국법인 경험을 살려 중국 칭다오에 중국법인을 설립하였다. 비록 건강식품회사로 국내 1등을 달리는 회사였지만, 화장품 후발주자로서 경쟁이 치열한 국내시장에서 자리잡기는 쉽지 않은 일이었으며, 특히 해외수출이 거의 없었던 건강식품 사업에서도 중국진출은 매우 큰 기회였기 때문이다.
그런데 바로 코로나19 팬데믹 사태가 벌어지고 말았다. 2020년 2월 말에 내가 중국으로 넘어가서 2주간 자가격리를 하는 동안, 중국은 완전히 봉쇄에 들어가서 그 어떤 사업도 벌어질 수가 없었다.
불행 중 다행인 것은 팬데믹 기간 동안 중국인들의 한국 화장품에 대한 니즈(Needs)가 줄어든 반면, 건강식품에 대한 니즈는 매우 강해졌다. 먹는 식품에 대해 가짜상품이 많은 중국인들의 건강에 대한 염려가 팬데믹을 겪으며 더욱 한국식품에 대한 관심으로 증가한 까닭이었다.
그러나 나는 아무 것도 할 수 없었다. 그나마 위챗으로 과거 알고 지냈던 화장품 바이어들에게 프로바이오틱스 건강식품인 락토핏을 소개하는 정도였는데, 이것이 하나의 전환점이 되어 락토핏을 중국시장에 상륙시키는 계기가 되었다.
그러나 나는 팬데믹의 어두운 그림자 속에서 좋은 결과를 보지 못하고, 아직 봉쇄가 풀리지도 않은 중국 땅에 갇혀 있는 상황에서, 성과를 내지 못한 책임을 지고 해임 통보를 받았다. 중국으로 발령을 받고 넘어 온지 단 4개월 만이었다.
하지만 나는 CKD건강회사에 몸담고 있었던 1년 9개월이란 짧은 기간동안 중국법인을 설립하였고, 코로나19라는 대재앙 같았던 팬데믹 기간 중에도 중국으로 넘어가 체념하지 않고 한계를 극복하기 위해 락토핏의 씨앗을 뿌렸다.
지금 CKD 중국법인이 얼마나 잘하는지는 모른다. 다만 수십년간 중국시장에 발을 내밀지도 못했던 회사가 중국에 진출하게 된 시작점은 긍정의 힘을 믿고 있었던 나로부터 비롯됐다는 사실이다. 바로 내 마음 속 승리자로서의 긍정의 힘이 작용했기 때문이다.
모든 인간은 원래 태어날 때부터 실패한 사람으로 태어난 것이 아니라, 이미 태어나는 순간 성공자이고 승리자이다. 인간은 수억 개의 정자 중 가장 빠르고 강하며 우수한 하나의 정자만이 난자와 수정되어 태어난 승리자의 DNA를 가지고 있다. 한 두 개의 경쟁도 아닌 자그마치 수억 대 일의 경쟁을 물리치고 이긴 위대한 승리자인 것이다.
그러니 우린 이제 스스로 마음 속에 있는 승리자의 본질을 뽑아내야 한다. 남들이 바라보는 모습이 아닌 나 자신이 생각하는 나의 진짜 모습을 찾는 것이다. 이 사회 속에서 남들은 내게 고양이라고 우기더라도 내 속에 숨겨진 진정한 호랑이를 끄집어내는 것이, 치열한 이 사회를 살아가는 첫 번째이고 기본적인 긍정적 태도이다.

During my tenure as Head of the Cosmetics Division at CKD Health Food Company, I leveraged my experience with the Chinese branch of C Cosmetics to establish a new branch in Qingdao, China. While CKD was the number one domestic health food company, breaking into the fiercely competitive cosmetics market as a latecomer was no easy feat. Furthermore, the health food business had little to no overseas exports at the time, making this entry into the Chinese market a significant opportunity.
Then the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
In late February 2020, I traveled to China, only to find myself in two weeks of mandatory quarantine. By the time my isolation period ended, China had gone into full lockdown, leaving no room for business activities.
However, there was a silver lining. While the pandemic reduced Chinese consumers’ interest in Korean cosmetics, it significantly heightened their demand for health food products. Widespread distrust of counterfeit goods, coupled with growing health concerns, led to increased interest in authentic Korean health products during the crisis.
Despite this shift in market dynamics, I found myself unable to act effectively. The most I could do was introduce Lacto-Fit, a probiotic health supplement, to my former cosmetics contacts via WeChat. Surprisingly, this small effort became a turning point, paving the way for Lacto-Fit’s entry into the Chinese market.
Yet the dark shadow of the pandemic loomed large. Locked down in China, unable to produce tangible results, I was eventually dismissed from my position. This occurred just four months after I had relocated to China.
Looking back, however, I take pride in what I accomplished during my brief 1 year and 9 months at CKD. I established a Chinese branch under extraordinarily difficult circumstances and sowed the seeds for Lacto-Fit in a time of unprecedented crisis.
I don’t know how CKD’s Chinese branch is performing today. But what I do know is this: the company’s first step into the Chinese market—a market it had failed to penetrate for decades—began with me and my belief in the power of positivity. It was my unwavering resolve, as a victor in my own heart, that set this journey in motion.
No human being is born a failure. Each of us enters this world as a success story and a winner. The very fact that we exist is the result of one extraordinary sperm cell, the fastest and strongest among billions, merging with an egg. To have overcome such astronomical odds—billions to one—is to carry the DNA of a true victor.
It is now our duty to uncover the essence of that winner within us. This means discovering our true selves—not the version of us others perceive, but the version we see and believe in. Even if society insists we are mere house cats, we must summon the hidden tiger within. Recognizing and embracing our true inner strength is the first step—and the foundational attitude—for surviving and thriving in this fiercely competitive world.
