이 세상에 나온 모든 세상을 놀라게 한 발명품들을 보면 어느 날 갑자기 툭 튀어나오듯 나온 새로움이 아니다. 특히 과거와는 달리 복잡한 현재에 와서는 더더욱 그렇다. 지금 이 시대를 바꾸는 놀라운 혁신적인 제품인 스마트폰만 해도 새로운 것은 하나도 없다. 이미 존재하는 휴대폰에 이미 존재한 MP3, 디지털 카메라, 컴퓨터의 기능을 하나로 담은 것에 불과하다.
그러나 그 이전에 누가 이런 생각을 했을까? 아니 생각은 했을 지는 모르겠지만 이렇게 여러 기능을 융합하면서도 사용 기능을 단순화하고 아름답게 현실화하지는 못했을 것이다. 그런 점에서 스티브 잡스가 각광을 받은 이유일 것이다.
이어령 교수는 현재는 디지로그 시대라고 말했다. 디지털이 지배하는 이 시대에 아날로그 감성이 만나 이루어지는 창조의 시대이다. 애플의 혁신성은 다양하고 복잡한 첨단 기능들을 모두 디지털로 제공하는 반면, 옛날 구식 제품처럼 사람이 손으로 사용하는 것들은 단추 하나로 모아 놓은 단순하고 아름다운 여백의 미를 디자인으로 제공했다는 것이다.
또한 최근에는 인문·사회과학과 자연과학을 통합해 새로운 것을 만들어낸다는 의미로 융합이란 말보다 통섭(統攝)이란 말을 많이 사용하고 있다.
통섭(統攝)이란 단어는 미국의 생물학자 에드워드 윌슨(Edward Wilson)이 사용한 ‘컨슬리언스(Consilience)’란 말을 이화여대 최재천 교수가 번역하여 표현한 말로써, 큰 줄기(통統)를 잡는다(섭攝), 즉 서로 다른 것들을 한데 묶어 새로운 하나의 큰 줄기를 만든다는 의미이다. 지금까지의 과학기술과 디자인의 한계를 자연에서 찾음으로써 새로운 경영의 돌파구를 찾으려는 노력은 과거에는 생각지도 못했던 전혀 상반된 학문들을 서로 연결시켜 주고 있는 것이다.
이렇듯 창의력은 어느 한가지가 번뜩이듯 갑자기 튀어나오는 것이 아니라, 내 안에 쌓여 있던 수많은 지식과 경험들이 번뜩이는 통찰력을 통해, 서로 전혀 상관 없다가도 하나로 연결되고 만나고 합쳐지면서 새로운 아이디어로 창조되는 것이다. 그리고 이것이 우리가 세상의 모든 것들을 통해 배우려고 하는 구도자의 자세로 살아가는 진정한 이유이다.
미국의 물리학자이자 의학자로서 노벨 수상자이기도 한 로잘린 얄로는 말했다.
“배움에 대한 흥분이 젊음과 늙음을 구별한다. 배우고 있는 한 당신은 늙지 않는다.”
배우고 익히며 언제나 새로워지는 즐거움에 빠진 사람은 비록 육신은 늙어가더라도 마음은 항상 새로울 것이다. 미용과 성형으로 치장하여 아무리 외모가 젊고 아름다워졌다 해도, 그 지식과 정신이 낡았다면 고루한 늙은이에 불과할 것이다.
배움은 끝이 없다.
배우고 또 배울수록 일신우일신(日新又日新), 매일 새로워진다.
죽음이 나를 가로막아 내 인생이 끝나 다할 때까지 배움을 채워 나가보자. 그렇다면 저승사자가 내 침대 머리맡에 왔을 때 아마도 행복한 미소로 맞이하게 될지도 모를 일이다.

Consilience—The Power of Integration
More recently, the term “consilience” has gained prominence over “convergence” in describing the fusion of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
The concept of consilience (統攝, 통섭) comes from biologist Edward Wilson, later translated into Korean by Professor Choi Jae-cheon. The word means “to bring together different fields to form a unified framework.”
By overcoming the traditional barriers between disciplines, consilience has led to breakthroughs in management, technology, and design—finding inspiration in nature to solve real-world challenges.
Innovation does not happen in isolation. It emerges when seemingly unrelated knowledge and experiences are connected through insight, leading to entirely new ideas. This is why a lifelong pursuit of learning is essential—we must continuously seek knowledge from all things.
The Lifelong Pursuit of Learning
Rosalyn Yalow, a Nobel-winning physicist and medical researcher, once said:
“The excitement of learning is what separates youth from old age. As long as you are learning, you will never grow old.”
No matter how much one tries to maintain a youthful appearance through beauty treatments or surgery, a stagnant mind ages faster than the body. True youth comes from a constant thirst for learning.
Learning has no end.
With each lesson, we renew ourselves daily (日新又日新, ilshin uilshin)—becoming better than yesterday.
Let us keep learning until the very end. If we do, perhaps when the Grim Reaper stands at our bedside, we will welcome him with a satisfied smile—having lived a life of endless discovery.
