다음 날 아침, 머쓱해 하는 신팀장과는 달리 조윤희는 아무 일도 없었다는 듯 자연스러웠다. 그는 이 모든 것이 마치 한 여름 밤의 꿈과 같았다. 서울로 올라오는 차 안에서도 조윤희는 오히려 평상시와 달리 수다스러울 정도로 조잘거렸다. 신팀장은 그때만 해도 그녀의 마음 속에 어떤 변화가 있었는지를 미쳐 알지 못하고 단지 어색한 분위기를 피할 수가 있어 다행스럽게만 생각했다.
그러나 일주일 후 그 동안 인테리어가 진행되었던 직영점 3개점과 대리점 10개점이 동시에 오픈하면서 뷰티박스를 비롯한 300개 제품이 론칭되고 성공적인 반응이 미쳐 다 들어오기도 전에 그녀는 끝내 사표를 내었다. 신팀장은 그녀를 강하게 잡으며 사표 수리를 하려고 하지 않았으나, 그녀는 막무가내로 회사를 아예 나오지 않아 버렸다. 결국 신팀장은 마지막으로 그녀의 집으로 찾아가 집 근처 카페에서 그녀를 만날 수가 있었다.
세련된 파리지엔느가 아닌 생얼굴의 초췌해진 조윤희가 마치 다른 사람처럼 그의 맞은 편에 휑하니 앉아 있었다. 신팀장은 가슴이 무너지는 것만 같았지만 간신히 아무렇지 않다는 듯이 말을 꺼냈다.
“좋아 보이지 않네. 마음 고생이 심했나 봐.”
“네…” 신팀장의 말에 그녀는 고개를 떨구고 간단히 대답을 하였다.
“우리 서로 노력해서 다시 시작하자. 우린 누구도 따라 올 수 없는 팀워크를 자랑해 왔잖아?”
“아뇨… 팀장님. 그렇게 다시 사업개발팀 때처럼 돌아가기는 힘들 것 같아요.”
“윤희씨… 제발…!!”
“저, 선도 보고 결혼도 하려고요. 그래서 가능한 빨리 팀장님을 잊으려 해요. 팀장님 곁에 있을 수록 마음만 더 아픈 것 같아요. 일도 잘 안되고요. 팀장님도 제가 있어봤자 전혀 도움이 되지 않을 거에요. 중요한 이 때에 저 때문에 일을 망칠 수는 없지 않겠어요? 그냥 이젠 일도 하지 않고 팀장님도 다 잊고, 그냥 누구라도 절 위하고 사랑해 주는 사람 만나 그분이랑 결혼해서 주부로 행복하게 살고 싶어요.”
“윤희씨~! 그런 말이 어디 있어? 결혼이 어디 소꼽장난인가?”
“저 괜찮아요. 이렇게 무책임하게 일도 마무리 하지 못하고 심려를 끼쳐드려 죄송해요. 그냥 이렇게 저를 보내 주세요. 부탁이에요.”
신팀장은 그녀를 차마 더 이상 잡을 수가 없었다. 다 자기가 우유부단해서 결국 이렇게 된 것이라 후회하며, 할 수 없이 그녀를 이젠 떠나 보내야 한다고 생각했다. 그는 그때만 해도 그녀에 대한 자신의 마음이 사랑인지 아니면 특별히 더 끌리는 직원에 대한 호감 정도인지 종잡을 수가 없었다. 어쩌면 지금 상황에서는 이렇게라도 일단 그녀를 보내고 잠시 떨어져 있는 것이 더 나을지도 모른다고 그는 생각했다.
“윤희씨, 그럼 우리 이렇게 하자. 제발 그 아무에게나 시집간다는 말은 하지 좀 말고…. 내게 시간을 좀 줘. 지금 나도 윤희씨에 대한 감정을 잘 모르겠고, 그 무엇보다도 지금 내겐 해야 할 일들이 너무도 많아. 그리고 잘 알다시피 윤희씨의 공백을 한 시라도 비울 수가 없는 일이니, 사표는 처리해 줄게. 일단 쉬면서 나를 좀 기다려 줘. 응?”
힘겹게 조윤희를 달래고 회사로 돌아 온 신팀장은 조윤희의 사표에 싸인을 하고 민이사에게 가져갔다. 그는 사직 사유를 그 동안 사귀었던 사람과 갑자기 결혼하게 되었는데, 남편 될 사람이 직장생활을 반대하기 때문에 어쩔 수가 없었다고 둘러댔다. 민이사는 유능한 인재를 놓친 것에 대해 아쉬워 하는 한편, 조윤희의 무책임한 행동에 한바탕 소란을 피웠지만, 마침내 사표는 수리되어 인사팀에 넘겨지면서 모든 것이 일단락되었다. – 계 속 –

I just want to quit, forget everything, meet someone who genuinely cares about me, get married, and live happily as a housewife.”
“Yoon-hee! How can you say that? Marriage isn’t child’s play.”
“I’m fine. I’m really sorry for leaving everything unfinished and causing you concern. Please just let me go. I’m asking you.”
Team Leader Shin couldn’t bring himself to stop her any longer. He regretted his indecisiveness that led to this moment and came to terms with having to let her go.
