신팀장은 그 후 일주일 동안 여드름 화장품을 포함한 브랜드 포트폴리오 전략 안을 꽤 공들여 만들어서, 민상무에게 보고 하였다. 그러나 기대와 달리 민상무는 그의 브랜드 전략 보고를 끝까지 들어 보지도 않고 중간에 그의 설명을 끊어 버렸다.
“신팀장, 이게 말이 되나? 여드름 화장품이라니? 어디 화장품으로 여드름이 치료된다고 생각해? 게다가 M&C에 여드름이 말이나 되나? 어디 브랜드 망칠 일이 있어?”
“아닙니다. M&C로 한다는 것이 아니라….”
“됐네. 더 이상 들을 것도 없어. M&C든 아니든 여드름 화장품이란 건 말도 안돼. 약도 아니고 말이야.”
“하지만 상무님, 지금 이미 일본에서는 이 시장이 커지고 있습니다. 분명 우리나라에도 기회가 있을 것입니다.”
“여드름이 기능성 허가가 되나? 화장품으로 여드름이 나아진다고 광고할 수가 있나?”
“아닙니다. 그렇게 하지는 못하지만 그런 문제를 해결해 나가는 게 앞으로 저희가 할 일이죠.”
“국내에 여드름 화장품이 왜 없는지 알아? 바로 그런 법규 상의 문제 때문에 아무도 하지 않는 거야. 이 일은 없었던 걸로 하고, 딴 생각하지 말고 지금 맡고 있는 M&C 기초라인이나 더 잘할 생각이나 하게.”
“상무님, 그래도 제 얘기를 끝까지 들어봐 주시기 바랍니다.”
“아니, 됐네. 내가 그리 한가한 사람이 아니란 말이야. 그 보고서만 놔두고 가게. 나중에 볼테니.”
“네. 알겠습니다.”
신팀장은 자신의 생각을 제대로 피력하지도 못하고 나오고 말았다. 요즘 들어 민상무가 과거보다 고집이 더 심해진 것만 같다는 생각이 점점 더 커져만 갔다. 사람이 어찌 저리 금방 바뀔 수 있을까도 싶고, 아니면 원래 본질이 그런 사람이었는데 그때는 그가 신팀장에게 양보할 수 밖에 없었던 상황이었는지도 몰랐다. 신팀장은 민상무의 방을 나오며 크게 한숨을 쉬었다.
자리로 돌아온 신팀장을 박대리가 강아지 마냥 쫄래쫄래 쫓아왔다.
“팀장님, 어떻게 됐어요?”
“잘 안 되었네. 내 얘기를 들으려고 하지도 않으셔.”
“네? 상무님이 팀장님 말을요?”
여지 것 신팀장 말이면 거의 모든 걸 OK했던 민상무였든지라 박대리도 꽤 의아해 하는 눈치였다.
“그러게. 요즘 그분 뭔가 좀 변하신 것 같지 않니?”
“하긴… M&C 성공으로 상무님도 되시고, 각종 신문잡지에 마이더스의 손이라고 인터뷰도 계속 실리시고… 요즘은 이 모든 게 본인 혼자 다한 것처럼 생각하시는 것 같아요. 그러게 팀장님도 인터뷰 좀 하라니까…. 맨날 뒤로 빼시니 모든 공이 다 상무님에게 넘어가잖아요.”
“에이… 그런 게 뭐가 중요해? 회사가 중요하고 일이 중요하지…”
“꼭 그런 것만은 아니라니까요~? 팀장님도 이젠 정치가 필요해요. 정치요.”
“정치고 나발이고 됐고~. 이거 여드름 화장품 말이야. 아무래도 상무님 반대로 쉽게 될 것 같지 않은데, 일단 우리끼리라도 준비해 보자. 그리고 더 가능성이 높아지면 그때 다시 얘기해보자고.”
“어휴~ 좀… 그만 좀 하세요. 상무님도 반대하는데 우리끼리 해서 어쩌려고요?”
“진희씨랑 함께 미팅 좀 하자.”
“허진희씨~~”
신팀장은 박대리 말을 들은 척도 안 하고 바로 허진희를 부르며 회의실로 앞서갔다. – 계 속 –

Team Leader Shin spent the following week meticulously preparing a brand portfolio strategy that included acne skincare products and presented it to Executive Director Min. However, contrary to his expectations, Director Min interrupted the presentation midway without listening to the full explanation.
“Team Leader Shin, does this make any sense? Acne skincare? Do you really think acne can be treated with cosmetics? And what does acne have to do with M&C? Are you trying to ruin the brand?”
“No, it’s not about doing it under M&C—”
“That’s enough. I don’t need to hear more. Whether it’s under M&C or not, the idea of acne skincare is absurd. It’s not even a medicine.”
“But Director, this market is already growing in Japan. There is definitely an opportunity here in Korea as well.”
“Do acne products even qualify for functional claims? Can we legally advertise that a cosmetic improves acne?”
“No, we can’t do that directly, but addressing those regulatory issues is exactly the kind of challenge we should be tackling.”
“Do you know why there are no acne cosmetics in the domestic market? Because of those very legal constraints. No one’s doing it for that reason. Consider this proposal scrapped, and instead, focus on managing the M&C basic line more effectively.”
“Director, at least please hear me out to the end.”
“No. I’m not some idle man with time to spare. Just leave the report. I’ll look at it later.”
“Yes, understood.”
Team Leader Shin left without even being able to fully express his thoughts. Lately, he had been feeling that Director Min had become more stubborn than before. He wondered how someone could change so drastically, or perhaps this was simply who Min had always been—and he had only yielded to Shin in the past due to situational necessity. Exiting Min’s office, Shin let out a heavy sigh.
Back at his desk, Assistant Manager Park trailed behind like a loyal pup.
“Team Leader, how did it go?”
“Not well. He wouldn’t even listen.”
“What? Director Min didn’t listen to you?”
Given that Director Min had previously approved nearly everything Team Leader Shin proposed, Park was clearly puzzled.
“Exactly. Doesn’t he seem different these days?”
“Well… after M&C’s success, he became a senior executive, and now he’s being interviewed in all sorts of magazines, being called the Midas of cosmetics… I think he’s starting to believe he did everything on his own. I told you—you should’ve done some interviews too. You keep stepping back, so now all the credit’s going to him.”
“Come on, that kind of stuff doesn’t matter. What’s important is the company and the work…”
“That’s not entirely true! You need politics too now. Politics.”
“Forget politics. Let’s just focus on this acne skincare idea. Even if the Director is against it, let’s start preparing among ourselves. If it looks more viable later, we can bring it up again.”
“Ugh~ can’t you just let it go? What are we going to do on our own if the Director already said no?”
“Let’s have a meeting with Jinhee.”
“Ho Jinhee~”
