“증거를 모을 수 있니?”
“네. 이미 통장 사본까지 확보했어요.”
신팀장은 최근 끊었던 담배를 박성준에게 하나 얻어 피어 물었다.
“일단, 우리만 알고 있는 비밀로 하자. 이걸 민이사님께 보고하면 가뜩이나 눈에 가시 같던 배부장은 그대로 해고다. 그리고 또 비단 배부장 한 사람만의 문제가 아니라 디자인팀, 구매팀, 개발팀 모두 거래선 관리 상의 문제로 일이 크게 벌어질 수도 있어. 한창 중요한 시기인데 자칫 M&C 출시에도 영향을 줄 수도 있고….”
“네. 저도 그래서 먼저 형님에게만 조용히 얘기를 한 거에요.”
“그래. 잘했다. 우리 김대리랑도 같이 의논해 보고 마음의 결정을 해보자.”
신팀장은 잠시 담배를 한 개피 더 피우더니 화제를 돌려 박성준에게 물었다.
“그나저나, 구매팀 생활은 어때? 내 보기에 완전 체질인 것 같은데?”
“무슨 소리에요? 형님, 힘들어 죽겠어요.”
“잘하는 것 같던데, 뭐가 그리 힘드니?”
“일이 힘든 것보다, 나이도 어린 내가 나이 많은 거래선 사장들에게 막말도 하게 되고, 점점 자신이 피폐해지는 것 같아요. 아버지 뻘 되는 사장들도 있는데 말이에요. 그리고 그런 스트레스 때문인지 아니면 성격적으로 무슨 변화가 왔는지, 집에서도 그렇고 친구들이나 다른 사람들에게도 신경질적으로 변한 것 같아요. 아무래도 내 성격이랑은 안 맞는 것 같아서 여기 오래 있다가는 큰 일 나겠어요.”
“네가 너무 무리해서 그러는 걸 꺼야. 조금 여유를 가지고 일해봐. 이대리도 다음 주면 돌아온다고 하니 좀 나아지겠지.”
“그렇게 난리를 치지 않으면 일이 안 돌아가는 곳이 바로 구매팀이어요. 자칫 M&C 다 펑크납니다. 아무튼 아무래도 이대리님이 오시면 좀 나아지겠죠.”
신팀장은 박성준과 말을 마치고 옥상을 내려오며 그를 끝까지 책임져주지 못한 것이 안타까워 차마 말로 꺼내지 못했던 속 마음을 다시 한번 다짐했다.
‘성준아, 조금만 더 참아줘라. 반드시 마케팅부로 데려올게…’
며칠 후 신팀장은 박성준과 김대리와 함께 자주 가는 호프 집에서 만났다. 그간의 사정을 고민한 신팀장은 자신의 의견을 솔직히 터 놓았다.
“난 말이야…. 그냥 묻어 뒀으면 좋겠어. 배부장도 한 가정의 가장이고 나이도 이미 40대 중반이 넘었는데 이런 일로 갑자기 실직하게 되면, 아마 다른 회사로 이직하기도 힘들 거야. 이는 한 사람의 일생과 한 가족의 미래가 달린 문제인 것 같아.”
“저도 동의해요. 팀장님 덕분에 이젠 예전 같지 않고 전체적인 시스템으로 일이 돌아가니까, 그런 뒷돈이 거래되는 일은 없어질 것입니다. 사실 다른 마케팅부가 문제이긴 하지만, 그것도 저희가 점차 콘트롤할 수 있을 것 같아요.”
“그래. 그리고 우리가 그렇게도 고생했던 M&C가 곧 탄생할텐데, 이 고생이 헛되이 되면 안되겠지? 성준아, 너도 그렇지 않냐?”
“그럼요. 저도 영업부 있을 때부터 지금까지 크게 한 몫 했잖아요. M&C의 성공적인 론칭이 무엇보다도 중요하죠.”
“그래, 우리 이건 없었던 일로 하자. 그리고 그런 사람은 결국 오래 못 갈 거야. 만약 그 사람이 계속 성공한다면 이 회사가 썩은 회사가 될테지. 그렇게 되기 전에 우리가 계속 감시하며 막아보자고.”
회사가 그들 세 명의 어깨에 걸려있는 것도 모르는 사람들처럼, 세 사람은 마냥 천진하게 웃으며 7월의 마지막을 보내고 있었다.

“Can you gather evidence?”
“Yes. I’ve already secured a copy of the bankbook.”
Team Leader Shin, who had recently quit smoking, took a cigarette from Park Sung-joon and lit it.
“For now, let’s keep this between us. If we report this to Director Min, Section Chief Bae will be fired immediately, which he already sees as a thorn in his side. But this isn’t just about Bae alone—this could spiral into a bigger issue involving the design, procurement, and development teams, all tied to vendor management. It’s a critical time right now, and it could even impact the M&C launch.”
“Yes. That’s why I decided to speak to you quietly first.”
“Good. You did well. Let’s discuss it with Assistant Manager Kim and come to a decision together.”
After smoking another cigarette in silence, Team Leader Shin changed the subject and asked Park Sung-joon,
“By the way, how’s your time in the procurement team? Honestly, it looks like you’re cut out for it.”
“What are you talking about? I’m dying here.”
“You seem to be doing well—what’s so hard about it?”
“It’s not the work itself. I’m young, yet I find myself yelling at older business owners, and I feel like it’s draining my soul. Some of these men are old enough to be my father. I think all the stress—or maybe some kind of personality shift—is turning me irritable even with family, friends, and others. This job really doesn’t suit me. If I stay here longer, I’m afraid something bad will happen.”
“You’re probably just pushing yourself too hard. Try to take things a bit easier. Assistant Manager Lee will be back next week, so things should improve a little.”
“This team only runs if someone’s throwing a fit. Otherwise, M&C could fall apart. But yeah, I’m hoping things will settle once Lee’s back.”
As Shin came down from the rooftop after talking to Park, he was struck by the guilt of not being able to support him fully. He made a silent promise he couldn’t bring himself to say aloud.
“Just hold on a little longer, Sung-joon. I’ll bring you over to Marketing, no matter what…”
A few days later, Shin met Park and Assistant Manager Kim at their usual bar. After reflecting on everything, Shin finally opened up with his honest thoughts.
“I think… we should just let this go. Section Chief Bae is a family man in his mid-40s. If he suddenly loses his job over this, it’ll be nearly impossible for him to get hired elsewhere. This isn’t just about one person—it’s about his entire family’s future.”
“I agree. Thanks to you, Team Leader, things aren’t like before. The work now runs on a proper system, so shady backdoor dealings will stop. The real issue lies with the other marketing team, but I think we can gradually bring that under control as well.”
“Exactly. And our M&C, the one we’ve suffered so much for, will finally be born soon. We can’t let all our effort go to waste. You feel the same, don’t you, Sung-joon?”
“Of course. I’ve been heavily involved from back when I was in Sales. Making the M&C launch successful is more important than anything else.”
“Then let’s treat this as if it never happened. People like him never last long anyway. And if he does keep thriving, it means this company is already rotten. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen—let’s keep watching and stop it before it gets worse.”
As if oblivious to the burden they carried for the company, the three men laughed innocently, closing out the last days of July.
