민대표는 이른 아침부터 이상무가 쭈삣하며 방으로 들어와선, 대뜸 내민 서류를 한참 동안 바라보며 미간을 잔뜩 찌푸렸다. 어제 그런 수난을 당했는데도 이상무의 머리 속에는 오직 이 회사의 동사장 자리를 다시 차지하려는 생각뿐이 없다고 그는 생각했다.
그러자 그는 이젠 더 이상 이상무만을 믿고 영업을 기대할 수는 없겠다는 생각이 확신으로 더욱 굳어졌다. 그는 긴 침묵을 깨고 주인의 눈치를 마냥 살피고 있는 고양이 마냥 눈을 이리 굴리고 저리 굴리고 있던 이상무를 바라보며 아무 일도 없었다는 듯이 태연하게 입을 열었다.
“그래서 자네가 동사장이 되겠다고? 그럼 나는?”
“네. 그건 몇 년 후의 일이지만, 그때 되면 사장님은 한국으로 귀국하셔서 편히 지내셔야죠.”
“그런데 이 조직도에서 신상무는 어디 갔지?”
“사장님, 여긴 제가 맡아서 알아서 다 할 수 있습니다. 인건비도 높은 신상무가 더 이상 있을 필요는 없죠. 저에게 모두 맡겨 주십시오. 제가 분명 전국적인 조직으로 키워 보겠습니다.”
“하지만 자네가 영업하기도 바쁠텐데, 제품개발에 마케팅에… 게다가 자금운영까지 어찌 다하겠나?”
“사장님도 아시다시피 이미 제가 다 했던 경험이 있지 않습니까? 다 잘 할 수 있습니다.”
“그건 직원 몇 명도 안 되는 아주 작은 구멍가게 같은 회사였고…. 내 꿈은 그리 작지 않아. 게다가 신상무는 내가 그 친구 대리시절부터 마케팅을 가르치며 키운 사람이야? 수많은 후배들 중에 대한민국에서 딱 한 명, 내가 이곳으로 함께 데려온 사람이 신상무인데, 내가 어찌 내보낸단 말인가?”
“하지만 여긴 중국입니다. 그리고 신상무는 중국경험이 없어 오히려 제가 제대로 일을 하지 못하겠습니다. 그렇다며 차라리 제가 진정한 부동사장으로 인정받을 수 있도록 저를 부사장으로 승진시켜 주시고, 신상무는 제 밑에서 관리만 하는 걸로 바꿔주십시오.”
“휴~ 참으로 답답하군. 그깟 호칭이야 마음대로 한다고 해도, 어디 임원 승진이 나 혼자 마음대로 시킬 수 있는 건지 아나? 이건 그룹 경영진들의 승인을 받아야 하는 일이란 말이야~”
민대표는 이상무를 당장 내쫓아 버리고 싶은 마음이었으나, 그래도 마음 속 울화를 꾹 참고 그가 어디까지 가나, 어디 한번 들어보자는 오기심에 끈기 있게 참으며 말을 이었다.
“그리고 부사장이 되면~ 연봉은? 연봉은 올려주지 않아도 상관없나?”
“사장님 솔직히 지금 상무 연봉 정도 받을 거였으면 전 이 사업을 시작하지도 않았습니다. 제가 원하는 수준에는 턱없이 부족합니다. 분명 중국에서 일등 화장품 회사를 만들테니, 지금 제 연봉의 두 배 정도로 올려 주십시오. 그런 만큼 일도 더욱 열심히 하겠습니다.”
이상무의 황당하고도 뻔뻔한 말에 민대표는 더 이상 참을 수 없는 지경에 이르러 그만 폭발하고 말았다.
“뭐라고? 연봉의 두 배? 나 참~ 이런 어이없는 놈을 다 봤나? 이봐~ 이상무! 지금 당신이 이 회사 들어와서 3개월 동안 한 일이 뭔가? 지금 매출 실적이 얼만지 알고나 하고 말하는 거야?”
“아니… 그건 신상무가 자꾸 방해를 해서 색조제품도 아직 못나오고 있고…”
“다른 변명하지 말앗~! 그게 어디 신상무 때문이야? 다 네가 잘못한 탓이지. 우리가 인수한 리화 제품으론 왜 못 팔아? 그거로 여지 것 잘 팔아 왔다며? 안후이성에 200명의 영업조직이 있다며? 그런데 지금 실적이 도대체 얼만데 그래?”
“그건 제가 이번에 출장 가면 금방 실적이 나올 것입니다. 걱정하지 마십시오.”
이상무는 갑자기 돌변한 민대표의 언성에 금방 기가 죽어 다시 변명하기에 급급하게 되었다.
“그럼 오늘이라도 당장 안후이성에 내려가서 실적을 만들어 오란 말이야. 그리고 실적 내기 전까진 올라올 생각도 하지 말고…. 알았나? 당장 나갓!”
“하지만 사장님, 너무 그리 심하게 몰아붙이시면 저도 일하기 힘듭니다. 일을 만들 수 있는 시간과 기회를 주셔야 하죠. 그렇지 않으면 저도 회사를 다닐 수가 없습니다.”
민대표는 이상무 입에서 회사를 다닐 수 없다는 말이 나오자 옳다구나 싶었다.
“자네 뻑하면 그만두겠다고 하는데…. 이젠 그 말 듣는 것도 신물이 나는구먼. 내 분명 말하겠는데… 앞으론 내 앞에서 그 말 다시는 꺼내지도 말아. 알았나? 그리고 혹 진짜로 그만 두고 싶으면 그냥 조용히 떠나 버리라고. 내게 인사할 필요도 없으니 그냥 나가 버리란 말이야. 내가 서운해 하지도 않을테니…. 나 없을 때 조용히 와서 짐 싸서 나가 버리라고~! 사내 대장부가 칼을 뽑았으면 뭐라도 하나 하는 게 있어야지? 말만 번지르르해서 네가 도대체 한 게 뭐냔 말이야? 당장 나가버려~” – 계속 –

Min stared at the documents Lee timidly handed him early in the morning, frowning deeply. He concluded that despite yesterday’s humiliation, Lee’s mind was consumed solely with reclaiming the position of co-president.
This convinced Min that he could no longer rely on Lee to drive sales. Breaking a long silence, he looked at Lee—whose eyes darted nervously like a cat gauging its owner’s mood—and spoke as if nothing were amiss.
“So you’re saying you want to be the co-president? Then what about me?”
“Yes. That’s something for a few years later, but by then you should return to Korea and enjoy a comfortable life.”
“But where is Executive Shin in this organization chart?”
“Sir, I can manage everything here on my own. There’s no need to keep someone as costly as Executive Shin. Leave everything to me. I will grow this into a nationwide operation.”
“But you’ll already be busy with sales. What about product development, marketing, and financial management? How are you going to handle all of that?”
“As you know, I’ve already done it all before. I can manage it perfectly well.”
“That was a tiny mom-and-pop-sized company with only a handful of employees… My ambitions aren’t that small. And Shin is someone I trained personally from his assistant manager days. Among countless juniors, he’s the one person I brought from Korea to work here. How could I possibly let him go?”
“But this is China. And Shin has no experience here, which makes it difficult for me to perform properly. If that’s the case, promote me to vice president so I can be recognized as the real deputy CEO, and move Shin under me to handle only administrative oversight.”
“Unbelievable. Titles aside, do you think I can single-handedly promote an executive? These things require approval from the group’s senior management.”
Min wanted to throw Lee out immediately, but he suppressed his anger, curious to see just how far Lee intended to go.
“And once you become vice president—your salary? You’re saying you don’t mind not getting a raise?”
“To be honest, I wouldn’t have joined this business if I were only earning a director-level salary. It’s far below what I expect. I will build the number-one cosmetics company in China, so please double my current salary. I’ll work even harder to match it.”
Lee’s absurd and brazen demand finally pushed Min past his limit, and he exploded.
“What? Double your salary? I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Tell me, Lee—what exactly have you accomplished in the three months you’ve been here? Do you even know what our current sales performance is?”
“Well… that’s because Executive Shin keeps interfering, so the color cosmetics line hasn’t been released yet…”
“No more excuses! That’s not Shin’s fault. It’s your own failure. Why aren’t you selling the products we acquired from LiHua? You said they’ve always sold well. You claimed to have a 200-member sales force in Anhui. Then what are the actual sales figures right now?”
“If I travel there this time, the numbers will come out quickly. Please don’t worry.”
Startled by Min’s sudden shift in tone, Lee immediately shrank back and scrambled to defend himself.
“Then go down to Anhui today and produce results. And don’t even think about coming back until you do. Understood? Get out!”
“But sir, if you pressure me too harshly, it becomes difficult for me to work. You need to give me time and opportunity. Otherwise, I won’t be able to stay with the company.”
When Min heard Lee say he couldn’t stay with the company, he almost welcomed it.
“You’re always saying you’ll quit. I’m sick of hearing it. Let me be clear—don’t ever say that in front of me again. And if you truly want to quit, just leave quietly.
