2019년 종근당건강에서 화장품사업본부장으로 있을 때, 나는 지금까지 회사의 시스템으론 이루어질 수 없는 일을 저질렀다. 물론 이후 모든 책임은 제가 진다고 했다. 뭐든 Risk-taking을 해야 일이 이루어질 수 있다고 생각했기 때문이다.
직원들이 너무 성급한 거 아니냐고 좀만 더 생각하자고 말렸지만, 나는 지금 바로 하지 않으면, 또 다른 기회가 오기 쉽지 않을 것 같아 강행을 했다.
그때 나는 리스크가 그리 크지 않다 싶으면, 마음 먹은 데로 일단 행동부터 하고 부족한 부분은 사후에 메꾸어 나가야 한다며 일을 강행하였고, 직원들은 회사 시스템(전산, 업무프로세스, 물류 등) 내에서 처리하기 위해 늦게까지 야근을 해야만 했다.
물론 나도 임원진 미팅을 요청해서 각 부서에서 일이 처리될 수 있도록 도와 달라고 하여, 3일 걸릴 일을 하루만에 처리하게 되어 순간의 기회를 놓치지 않을 수 있었다.
이런 나의 스타일 때문에, 당시 새로 들어간 직장에서 만난 직원들은 뒤집어 질 정도였을 것이다. 지금까지 미지근한 온천물에 느긋이 몸 담그고 있었다면, 나 하나로 인해 뜨거운 물에서 펄떡이게 된 것이나 다름없으니 말이다.
다음 날 아침 난 직원들에게 카톡으로 메세지를 전달했다.
“너무 급격히 일이 벌어지는 바람에, 여러분들이 수고가 많습니다. 사실 매출도 그리 크지 않습니다. 아니, 어쩌면 제품이 나갔어도 하나도 팔리지 않을지도 모릅니다. 그런데 모든 일은 그렇게 작은 일에서 시작하는 것이고, 그런 시작과 실행력이 나중에 큰 일을 만드는 것이라 생각합니다. 실행하기 전에는 모든 일이 0%였지만, 실행을 하는 순간 되든 안되든 확률은 50%로 늘어납니다. 2019년 우리는 마음 속의 생각과 꿈을 현실로 끄집어 내어 행동하는 사람들이 되기를 바랍니다. 홧팅~!!”
스티브 잡스는 젊은이들에게 조금이라도 젊었을 때 빨리 도전하라고 했다. 설령 실패했다 해도 젊었을 때는 크게 잃을게 없기 때문이다. 그리고 젊었을 때의 실패는 값진 경험이 될테니, 그 시간과 노력이 절대로 손해보는 일은 아닌 것이다.
사업도, 직장업무도, 인간관계도 마찬가지이다. 도전하고 행동하는 사람들에게 기회가 더 많다. 설령 잘못된 아픔이 따를 수도 있겠지만, 그 아픔에 비하면 얻을 수 있는 배움이 더 클 수도 있기 때문이다.
그래서…
안되면, 다시 하면 되고, 다시 안 되도 또 다시 하면 언젠가는 되고 말 것이다.

In 2019, while serving as Head of the Cosmetics Business Division at Chong Kun Dang Health, I did something that was impossible under the company’s existing system. I made it clear that I would take full responsibility for the consequences. I believed that only by taking risks could things truly be achieved.
When my team warned me that I was being too hasty and suggested thinking it through a bit more, I insisted on pushing forward. I felt that if we didn’t act immediately, the same opportunity might not come again.
At the time, I believed that if the risk wasn’t too high, I should act first and fill in the gaps later. So, I proceeded. My staff had to work late into the night to handle the process within the company’s systems—logistics, IT, and workflow.
Of course, I also requested a meeting with the executives and asked each department to help expedite the process. What usually took three days was completed in one, allowing us to seize the fleeting opportunity.
Because of this style of mine, I must have shocked many employees at the new workplace. If they had been relaxing in lukewarm water before, my presence must have made them feel like they were suddenly plunged into boiling water.
The next morning, I sent a KakaoTalk message to my team:
“Things have moved very quickly, and I know everyone’s working hard. Honestly, the sales won’t be that big. In fact, even if the product ships out, it might not sell at all. But every great achievement starts small. I believe such beginnings and execution are what eventually create something great. Before we take action, the chance of success is zero. The moment we act, it rises to 50%, whether it succeeds or fails. In 2019, let’s be people who bring our thoughts and dreams into action.”
Steve Jobs once advised young people to take risks while they are still young—because even if they fail, they have little to lose. The failures of youth are invaluable lessons, and the time and effort invested are never wasted.
The same applies to business, work, and relationships. Those who take risks and act always encounter more opportunities. Though mistakes and pain may follow, the lessons gained are often far greater than the losses endured.
So…
If it doesn’t work, do it again. And if it still doesn’t work, try again. Eventually, it will.
