아프리카 초원에서 사자는 굶고 산다.
2018년 아프리카 여행을 가서, 초원의 사자도 보고 가젤도 만났었다. 다만 아쉬웠던 건, 동물의 왕국 같은 자연 다큐에서 나오는 것처럼 사자가 멋지게 사냥하는 장면을 본 게 아니라, 나무 그늘 아래에서 너부러져 낮잠을 자는 사자들이었다. 나는 그 사자들이 분명 사냥을 하고 배부르게 먹었음이 틀림없으리라 생각했다.
그러나 사실 사자의 사냥 성공률은 20%뿐이 안 된다고 한다. 기자시절 아프리카 세렝게티를 취재하여 지금은 생존경영연구소장으로서 세렝게티의 생존경영을 설파하고 있는 서광원 소장은 그의 저서 <사장의 자격>에서 사자와 가젤의 이야기를 통해 절실함의 중요성을 얘기한 바가 있다.
사자와 가젤은 거의 같은 속도(시속 80km)로 달릴 수 있기 때문에, 사자가 그 간격을 좁히기는 여간 어려운 일이 아니다. 더욱이 사자는 500m 이상을 전력질주 하면 몸에 열이 올라 죽을 수도 있기 때문에 500m 이내에서 승부를 걸어야 한다. 그래서 가젤이 실수를 하여 넘어지거나, 가젤이 방심한 틈을 노려 기습 공격을 하거나, 여러 마리의 사자가 협공을 하지 않으면 사자는 튼실한 가젤을 잡기가 쉽지 않다.
사자와 가젤이 전력질주를 하는 500m는 양쪽 모두 고통스러운 상태이다. 이때는 누가 한번 더 힘을 내는가에 따라 승부가 결정되는데, 한 끼 식사를 위해 달리는 사자와 목숨을 걸고 절실하게 달려야 하는 가젤의 차이, 바로 이 차이가 사자의 사냥 성공률이 20%뿐이 안 되게 만드는 이유이다.
하지만 사자의 승률이 높아질 때가 있는데, 바로 연속되는 사냥 실패로 사자도 굶어 죽을 지경이 되면 목숨을 걸고 뛸 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 바로 절실함의 차이가 승부를 바꿔 놓는 것이다.
요즘처럼 다들 실력이 비슷하고 경쟁이 치열한 상황에서, 차별화된 성과를 내는 것은 사자와 가젤이 500m에서 겪어야 하는 고통스러운 전력질주와 같다. 자신을 벼랑 끝에 스스로를 내밀 듯이 절실한 마음가짐으로 일에 임하면 반드시 가젤을 잡을 수 있을 것이다.
맹자(孟子)는 하늘이 장차 중대한 일을 맡기려는 사람이란 의미로 천장강대임어사인야(天將降大任於斯人也)란 말을 했다.
하늘이 장차 어떤 사람에게 큰일을 맡기려 할 때는 반드시 먼저 그 마음을 고통스럽게 괴롭히고, 뼈마디가 꺾어지듯 육체적 고통을 당하게 하며, 배고프고 가난에 처하게도 하고, 하는 일마다 순조롭지 못하게 한다. 그리하여 마음에 고난을 극복하고 참을성을 기르게 되어 지금까지 할 수 없었던 어떤 사명도 감당할 수 있게 되는 것이다.
아직도 이런 절실함이란 것이 요즘 세대에는 마음에 와 닿지 않을지도 모르겠다. 실제로 절실하지 않은데 어떻게 절실한 마음을 유지할 수 있을까? 너무 경쟁에 치여 성공에 매달리다 보니, 오히려 너무 스트레스를 받고 좌불안석으로 초조해져서 집중력과 평정심을 잃어버린다면 더욱 일에 방해가 되는 것이 아닐까? 맞는 말일 수도 있다.
하지만 절실함은 경쟁에 관한 것이 아니다, 절실함은 돈과 명예, 출세에 관한 것도 아니다. 절실함은 꿈과 비젼에 관한 것이며, 성취감에 대한 것이다. 동물이 현재의 생존을 위해 절실하였고, 50~60대 세대들은 먹고 살기 위해 절실하였다면, 21세기를 사는 청년들은 꿈을 위해 절실해야 한다.
그리고 그 절실함이 열정이 되어 꿈을 향해 뛰어가게 해야 한다. 그러기 때문에 나의 열정의 대상은 경쟁상대도 아니고 출세를 위한 것이 아니라, 바로 미래에 그려지는 나 자신이다. 어제의 내가 현재 나의 발목을 붙잡게 할 수는 없다. 일신우일신(日新又日新), 어제보다 매일 새로워져서 꿈에 한 발짝 다가가기 위한 열정이 절실하게 필요한 것이다.
2017년 5월 세라젬H&B의 대표이사를 사직하고 나는 그해 한양대학교 경영학부 마케팅 전공으로 #박사과정 에 들어갔다. 내 나이 54세였다. 당시 내겐 다시 직장생활을 한다는 것보다, 60이 넘어서도 돈을 벌 수 있는 터전을 마련해야 한다는 절실함이 있었다. 그게 박사학위를 취득해서, 대학은 물론 기업체 등에서 나이 들어도 계속 강의를 할 수 있는 자격을 채우자는 것이었다.
2년 간의 코스워크(Course Work) 과정은 매우 힘들었다. 대학원생은 사람이기를 포기해야 한다고 했을 정도로 혹독하게 공부를 하고 논문과 씨름을 해야 했다. 내가 고3때 이렇게 공부했다면 한양대가 아니라 서울대에 입학했을 것이라는 말이 나왔을 정도로, 내 인생 가장 공부를 많이 한 2년이었다.
그 결과, 나는 전과목에서 A이상을 받을 정도로 좋은 학점도 받았고, 박사학위 취득 기준인 소논문 3개도 학회에 발표하여, 마지막 박사학위 논문만 쓰면 학위를 취득할 수 있는 단계에 도달하였다. 이 모두가 간절한 절실함 때문에 가능했던 일이었다.
그런데 어떤 인연으로 나는 2019년에 종근당건강 임원으로 취직을 하게 되었다. 화장품사업본부장으로서 나는 조직을 재정비하고 신규브랜드를 출시하였으며, 중국법인도 만들었다. 그리고 2020년엔 직접 중국법인장으로 발령나서 다시 중국으로 가게 되었다. 하지만 코로나19로 중국시장이 봉쇄되자, 나는 이렇다할 성과를 못 내고 회사에서 버림을 받고 다시 한국으로 돌아와야 했다.
다시 시작한 2년 간의 회사생활동안 나는 박사학위에 대한 절실함을 잊고 살았다. 그리고 종근당건강을 떠난 후, 작은 회사인 AM H&B를 설립하고 화장품 사업을 이어가며, 박사학위의 필요성과 절실함은 이미 사라져 버려, 결국 학위논문 쓰는 걸 포기하고 말았다. 당시 내게 절실한 대상은 학위가 아니라 신제품 뷰런치(Beaurunch) 화장품을 성공시키는 것이었기 때문이다.
결국 꿈과 목표에 대한 절실한 마음의 차이가 박사학위에 대해 다른 결과를 만든 것이다. 그래서 절실함은 꿈을 향해 있는 것이다. 설령 꿈은 멀고 현실은 가깝다 해도, 지금 나의 일이 꿈을 향한 과정이라면, 절실한 마음으로 최선을 다해야 할 것이다. 그 절실함이 우리를 열정의 세계로 안내하여 꿈을 이루게 할 것이다.

Lions Go Hungry on the African Plains
In 2018, during a trip to Africa, I had the chance to see lions on the plains and encounter gazelles. However, unlike the dramatic scenes in wildlife documentaries where lions majestically hunt, what I witnessed were lions sprawled out under the shade of trees, napping. I assumed they had recently hunted and eaten their fill.
In reality, a lion’s hunting success rate is only about 20%. Seo Kwang-won, who once covered the African Serengeti as a journalist and now leads the Survival Management Research Institute, discusses the importance of desperation through the stories of lions and gazelles in his book The Qualification of a Leader.
Since lions and gazelles can both run at nearly the same speed—around 80 km/h—closing the gap between predator and prey is no easy feat. Moreover, a lion cannot sprint for more than 500 meters without risking death from overheating, so it must succeed within this short distance. To catch a sturdy gazelle, a lion relies on the gazelle’s mistakes, such as stumbling, or catches it off guard, sometimes collaborating with other lions for a coordinated attack.
The 500-meter sprint is grueling for both the lion and the gazelle. The outcome hinges on who can muster just a little more strength. The difference between a lion running for a meal and a gazelle running for its life is what limits the lion’s success rate to 20%.
However, a lion’s success rate increases when it reaches the brink of starvation, as it then has no choice but to run with the same desperation as the gazelle. It is this difference in urgency that can alter the outcome.
In today’s world, where everyone has similar skills and competition is fierce, achieving differentiated results is akin to the painful sprint of lions and gazelles. By approaching work with the same desperate mindset as if standing on the edge of a cliff, one can achieve success.
Mencius once said, “When Heaven is about to place a great responsibility on a person, it first distresses their mind, wears out their body, exposes them to starvation and poverty, and frustrates their efforts, so as to build resilience and prepare them to accomplish what they otherwise could not.”
This sense of urgency might be difficult for today’s generation to fully grasp. How can one maintain a sense of urgency without truly experiencing it? Overwhelmed by competition, some might become so stressed and anxious that they lose focus and composure, which could be counterproductive. There’s some truth to this.
However, urgency is not about competition, money, fame, or career advancement. It’s about dreams, vision, and the sense of fulfillment. If animals are desperate for immediate survival, and if those in their 50s and 60s were desperate to make a living, then today’s youth should be desperate for their dreams.
This urgency should transform into passion that propels them toward their dreams. My competitor is not another person or the pursuit of status, but rather the future version of myself. In May 2017, I resigned as CEO of Ceragem H&B and began a Ph.D. program in marketing at Hanyang University. I was 54 years old. At that time, I felt a desperate need not to return to the corporate world but to establish a foundation that would allow me to earn an income even past 60. My plan was to earn a Ph.D. and qualify to teach at universities and corporations.
The two-year course work was extremely challenging. It was said that graduate students must give up their personal lives, and indeed, I endured rigorous study and intense battles with research papers. I even joked that if I had studied this hard in high school, I might have gone to Seoul National University instead of Hanyang. Those two years were the most academically intense period of my life.
As a result, I earned excellent grades, achieving A’s in all subjects, and published three research papers, fulfilling the requirements for a Ph.D. All that remained was my dissertation. This was all possible because of my urgent sense of purpose.
In 2019, however, an unexpected opportunity led me to join Chong Kun Dang Health as an executive. As head of the cosmetics division, I restructured the organization, launched new brands, and established a Chinese subsidiary. In 2020, I was assigned to lead the Chinese subsidiary, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent market lockdowns, I returned to Korea without notable achievements.
During those two years of renewed corporate life, I lost my sense of urgency for the Ph.D. After leaving Chong Kun Dang Health, I founded a small company, AM H&B, and continued my work in the cosmetics industry. My focus shifted entirely to launching a new skincare line, Beaurunch, and I ultimately abandoned my dissertation. At that moment, my urgency was no longer for the Ph.D. but for the success of the Beaurunch brand.
This shift in urgent focus created different outcomes for my Ph.D. journey. Urgency is inherently linked to dreams. Even if those dreams seem distant and reality feels close at hand, if one’s current work is part of the journey toward that dream, one must pursue it with an urgent and passionate heart. It is this sense of urgency that guides us into a world of passion, where dreams are realized.
