다음 날 아직 몸살기가 남아 있던 나는 평소보다 한 시간을 늦게 출근하여, 이미 내가 회사에 왔을 때는 이상무가 이른 아침부터 민대표의 방에 들어가 있던 상황이었다. 나는 다시 송부장을 불렀다.
“오늘은 또 뭔 일이래?”
“그러게요. 저도 잘 모르겠습니다. 어제 문이사와 술 좀 마시느라 저도 간신히 출근시간에 맞춰 나왔거든요. 그땐 이미 이상무가 사장님 방에 들어가 있는 상황이었습니다,”
송부장이 일부러 입을 슬쩍 가리며 말을 했어도, 아직 입에서 찌든 술냄새가 푹푹 풍기는 걸 보며, 송부장도 어제 무척 괴로운 시간을 보내며 술과 씨름하였구나 하고 나는 짐작할 수 있었다.
“그래~? 문이사완 모처럼 좋은 시간을 가졌나?”
나는 무척 궁금하다는 표정으로 송부장의 안색을 살피며 호기심 어린 아이처럼 마냥 기대에 부풀어 그의 말을 기다렸다.
“네. 그리고 총경리님~ 아무래도 제가 잘못한 것 같습니다. 그 동안 죄송했습니다.”
“아니, 뭐가? 송부장이 뭘 잘못했다고? 열심히 일해준 걸 내가 얼마나 고마워하는데~”
“어제 문이사 통해 얘기 많이 들었습니다. 사실 놀라운 건 이상무가 그 동안 문이사에게 저의 흠을 너무 많이 봤다는 사실입니다. 제가 그 동안 얼마나 이상무를 측은히 생각해서 잘 해주려고 했었는데…. 어찌나 저의 험담을 많이 했는지…. 아마도 이상무가 한 총경리님에 대한 험담들도 다 저의 경우처럼 지어내고 과장된 것이 아니었나 싶습니다.”
“어휴~ 이 놈아~~ 그걸 이제야 알았니? 그런데 누굴 탓하겠냐? 나도 한 때는 그 놈에게 혹하고 넘어 갈 뻔했고, 산전수전 다 겪은 사장님조차 그리 넘어갔었으니….”
“뭐라 할 말이 없습니다. 죄송합니다.”
송부장은 계속 고개를 들지 못한 채, 죽을 죄를 졌다는 듯이 어찌해야 할지를 모르며 서 있었다. 나는 송부장을 쇼파에 앉도록 한 후, 이상무가 송부장과 나 사이를 이간질하기 위해 내겐 또 얼마나 송부장에 대해 나쁜 점을 얘기했는지, 민대표에 대해선 또 어떻게 했고 직원들 간에도 어떻게 했는지도 말해 주었다. 그렇게 긴 이야기를 끝내며 나는 송부장을 따뜻하게 바라보며 말했다.
“송부장, 사기와 전략의 차이가 뭔지 알아? 바로 근거가 있는가 없는가의 차이야. 사실 근거가 없는 기획이나 전략도 모두 사기와 다름없어. 사기를 친다는 것도 어쩌면 미래에 대한 기대심리를 이용하여 선 투자를 받는 사업이나 다름없어. 단지 법적인 것과 불법적인 것의 경계선 상에서 그 계획이 근거가 있는 것인가 아닌가의 차이일 뿐이야.
물론 사기꾼들도 사람들을 속이기 위해 거짓 정보로 포장된 그럴싸한 근거들을 보여주어, 많은 사람들이 그걸 쉽게 믿고 피해를 겪는 게 현실이야. 하지만 좀 더 깊이 있고 논리적인 마인드를 가지고 있는 사람이라면 그 근거들에서 헛점들을 발견할 수 있을 거야.
중요한 건, 거짓은 또 거짓의 꼬리를 만들며 끝내는 들통나게 되어 있고, 진실은 결국 밝혀진다는 사실이야. 이미 사장님도 진실의 눈을 뜨게 되셨고 너도 사실을 알게 되었으니, 우리 앞으로 이 총체적인 난국을 함께 잘 헤쳐나가 보자. 지금부터 우리가 해야 할 일들이 너무 많다.”
“네. 알겠습니다. 그럼 전 이만 나가보겠습니다.”
힘없이 방을 나가는 송부장의 뒷모습을 바라보며 나는 급히 생각났다는 듯이 말했다.
“아참~ 송부장~! 일단 직원들 사표는 수리하지 않기로 했으니 걱정하지 말고, 이 점에 대해서는 너 술 좀 깨면 나중에 다시 얘기하자.”
“네? 아~ 감사합니다.”
방문 앞에 있던 송부장은 주춤주춤 뒤를 돌아보며 다시 한번 꾸벅 인사를 하더니 자신의 자리로 물러났다. 나는 드디어 하늘이 모두 나의 편으로 돌아선 것만 같았다. 고진감래(苦盡甘來)라고 하기엔 아직 너무 이른 시기였지만, 나는 드디어 고생 끝에 낙이 온 것만 같았다. – 계속 –

The next day, still aching from a lingering cold, I arrived at the office an hour later than usual. By the time I walked in, Lee had already entered CEO Min’s office early in the morning. I called Section Chief Song once more.
“What’s going on today?”
“I’m not sure. I barely made it to work on time myself after having drinks with Director Moon last night. By then, Lee was already inside the president’s office.”
Even though Song covered his mouth as he spoke, the heavy stench of alcohol still drifted from him. I could tell he’d spent a long and miserable night wrestling with drinks.
“Really? You and Director Moon had a good time then?”
I studied his expression with curiosity, waiting like an eager child for him to continue.
“Yes. And… Director, I think I was wrong. I’m sorry for everything.”
“What? What are you apologizing for? You’ve worked hard, and I’ve always appreciated that.”
“I heard a lot from Director Moon yesterday. What shocked me most was how often Lee criticized me behind my back. I always tried to treat him kindly because I felt sorry for him, but he spoke so badly of me… I’m starting to think that what he said about you was also exaggerated or fabricated, just like what he said about me.”
“Oh, you fool… and you only realize that now? Who can you blame? Even I was almost taken in by him once, and even the president—who’s been through every kind of political battle—was deceived for a while.”
“I have no excuse. I’m really sorry.”
Song kept his head down, as if he had committed a grave sin. I guided him to the sofa and explained in detail how Lee had tried to drive a wedge not only between him and me, but also between me and the CEO and even among the staff. When I finished, I looked at him warmly.
“Song, do you know the difference between deception and strategy? It comes down to evidence. A plan or strategy without evidence is nothing but a scam. Even fraud relies on people’s expectations about the future to secure upfront investment. The difference between legal strategy and illegal fraud lies in whether the plan has real foundation. Swindlers dress up lies with convincing but false evidence, and people fall for it and suffer.
But anyone who thinks critically will notice the flaws. What matters is that falsehood always leads to more falsehood and eventually collapses, while truth eventually surfaces. The president already sees the truth now, and so do you. From here on, let’s work together and push through this crisis. We’ve got a lot to do.”
“Yes, understood. I’ll get back to work.”
As I watched him walk out weakly, I suddenly remembered something.
“Oh, Song—one more thing. The employees’ resignations won’t be accepted. So don’t worry, and once you sober up a bit, we’ll discuss it in detail.”
“Really? Thank you.”
He turned back, bowed deeply, and returned to his desk. At that moment, it felt as if the heavens were finally shifting to my side. It was too early to call it sweet reward after hardship, but for the first time, it truly felt like relief was finally within reach.
