“마카이~ 이번 주말에 뭐해요?”
김현웅이 무료한 주말을 달래기 위해 마카이에게 유창한 중국어로 말하였다. 이상무와 서이사가 정리되면서 리화화장품 출신 직원들도 상당부분 떠났지만, 마케팅적으로 감각이 있었던 마카이는 송부장의 요청으로 회사에 그대로 남을 수 있었다.
“아무 일 없이 집에 있을 건데요?”
남자친구가 없는 마카이가 회사 아니면 대부분 집에서 시간을 보낸다는 사실을 모르는 사람은 아무도 없었다.
“그럼 우리 영화 보러 갈래요? 당산대지진이란 영화 보고 싶던데…”
“당산대지진이요? 그거 나도 보고 싶었어요. 지금 엄청 흥행하고 있더군요?”
“그럼 같이 볼래요? 어디서 하는 지 알아요?”
“음… 바이리광장(百麗廣場)에 있는 극장에선 대부분의 영화가 다 상영하니까 거기선 분명 볼 수 있을 거에요.’
바이리광장은 베이징올림픽 당시 요트 경기장 인근에 있어서 푸른 바다 위 다양한 요트가 즐비한 이국적이고 아름다운 경치를 볼 수 있는데, 특히 석양이 지는 바다와 칭다오의 아름다운 야경을 감상할 수 있는 곳으로 유명하다.
특히 주변에는 샤넬, 루이비똥 등 세계 유명 명품부터 젊은이들이 좋아하는 각종 SPA 패션 브랜드가 밀집된 종합 쇼핑몰뿐만 아니라, 실내 스케이트장, 커플 자전거, 수상 범퍼보트, 해상 유람선 등 각종 레져도 즐길 수 있는 곳이라 많은 젊은이들이 데이트를 즐기며, 수많은 관광객들이 꼭 방문하는 칭다오의 유명 관광지이다.
따라서 바이리광장에서 영화를 본다는 것은 단순히 영화만 보고 끝나는 것이 아니라, 자연스럽게 데이트 코스로 연결된다는 것을 의미하기도 했다. 그러나 김현웅은 이에 개의치 않고 흔쾌히 대답을 하였다.
“좋아요. 그럼 오후에 만나 그곳에서 같이 영화 봐요. 예매는 내가 왕샹(网上, 인터넷)으로 알아 본 후 시간이 정해지면 다시 연락줄게요.”
중국의 영화관에선 외국영화도 자막보다는 중국어 더빙이 많다. 물론 자막이 있는 곳도 있지만, 칭다오에서는 찾기가 쉽지 않았다. 나는 극장에서 탐 크루즈의 영화를 한번 본적이 있었는데, 영어가 아니라 중국어 더빙이어서 황당한 적이 있었다.
그래도 영어를 100% 알아듣지는 못해도 50% 정도는 이해하고 액션영화니까 별 문제없을 거라고 생각하고 가봤다가, 과거 주말의 명화를 보듯이 파란 눈의 서양인들이 중국어로 말하는 어색한 장면에 아연실색해서 그 후 다시는 영화를 보러 가지 않았다. 게다가 영화비는 얼마나 비싼 지, 90위엔(15,700원)이나 됐으니 중국인들 소득수준에 비해 비싸도 너무 비싸다는 생각이 들었다.
토요일 아침, 오늘도 어김없이 내가 아침부터 중국어 학원을 다녀오자 마자, 김현웅은 영화를 보러 간다며 나와 바톤 터치를 하듯이 집을 빠져나갔다. 나는 아직도 성조를 배우며 ‘으어으어’하고 있는데, 중국영화를 보러 가는 그가 무척 부러울 뿐이었다.

Kim Hyun-woong spoke fluently in Chinese to Makai to relieve the boredom of a free weekend. Baili Plaza is located near the yacht competition venue from the Beijing Olympics, where one can see an exotic and beautiful view of numerous yachts lined up on the blue sea. It is especially famous for offering views of the sunset over the sea and the stunning night scenery of Qingdao.
The surrounding area features not only a large integrated shopping mall packed with world-famous luxury brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, as well as various SPA fashion brands favored by young people, but also a wide range of leisure activities including an indoor skating rink, tandem bicycles, water bumper boats, and sea cruises.
For this reason, many young people enjoy dates there, and countless tourists make it a must-visit attraction in Qingdao.
Therefore, watching a movie at Baili Plaza does not simply end with the movie itself, but often naturally leads into a full date course. Nevertheless, Kim Hyun-woong did not mind this at all and responded readily.
“Sounds good. Then let’s meet in the afternoon and watch the movie there together. I’ll check the schedule online and once the time is set, I’ll contact you again.”
In Chinese movie theaters, foreign films are often dubbed into Chinese rather than shown with subtitles. Of course, there are theaters with subtitles, but they are not easy to find in Qingdao.
I once watched a Tom Cruise movie at a theater, only to be taken aback because it was dubbed in Chinese instead of English. I thought that even if I could not understand English 100%, I would at least grasp about 50%, and since it was an action movie, it would not be a problem. However, when I actually went, the awkward scenes of blue-eyed Westerners speaking Chinese, like watching an old weekend classic, left me utterly stunned.
After that, I never went to see another movie again. On top of that, the ticket price was unbelievably high—90 yuan (about 15,700 won). Compared to the income level of Chinese people, it felt far too expensive.
On Saturday morning, as usual, as soon as I returned from my Chinese language academy, Kim Hyun-woong headed out as if passing the baton to me, saying he was going to see a movie. I was still learning tones and struggling with “uh, uh” sounds, while he was off to watch a Chinese movie, which made me feel nothing but envy.
