다음 날 재무팀에서 파견 나온 직원 덕분에 우리는 단 삼일 만에 모든 문제를 발견할 수가 있었다. 워낙 짧은 8개월간의 장부이기 때문에 그리 오랜 시간이 걸리지도 않았으며, 유부장은 무척 단순하게 누가 봐도 눈에 보일 정도로 티가 나서 어이가 없을 정도로 회사 돈을 횡령하였기 때문이다. 총 1억원이나 되는 돈이었다.
이는 당시 적은 살림에 우리에겐 무척 큰 돈이었다. 그는 따이공으로 받은 제품 대금을 은행으로 직접 송부할 수가 없다는 핑계로, 중국에서 현금으로 가져간 돈을 회사로 입금하지 않고 자신의 개인통장에 넣기도 하였으며, 별도로 전산관련 페이퍼 컴퍼니를 하나 만들어 회사의 ERP 개발 명목으로 수 차례에 걸쳐 돈을 지급하였는데, 우습게도 그 회사의 대표이사가 유부장이었다.
이렇듯 야금야금 회사 돈을 유용하는 배임행위를 하고 있던 성격도 소심한 그가, 어찌 제대로 업무에 온 신경을 쏟아 부을 수 있었겠는가? 자꾸 수치가 틀리고 뭔가 쫓기듯 당황했던 그가 어찌 보면 당연하였을지도 모르는 일이었다.
유부장은 한중국을 오가며 혼자서 회계를 정리하였기 때문에, 중국에서 돈을 받아서 제대로 입금했다고 하면 그만이었다. 당시 우리회사에는 그처럼 한중국을 오가며 일을 봤던 민대표를 제외하고는 그 어느 누구도 이를 체크하고 관리할 사람이 없었지만, 맛있는 생선을 고양이에게 맡긴 채 민대표는 그저 고양이가 잘 지켜줄지 믿고만 있었던 것이다.
황금연휴를 한국에서 엄청 스트레스를 받고 돌아온 내게 민대표가 한 말은, 일이 이리 되도록 내가 제대로 관리도 안하고 뭘했느냐는 것이었다. 더욱이 그는 유부장의 직속 책임자이며, 대표이사임에도 불구하고 이런 일이 벌어졌는데도 국경절 연휴 동안 중국에서 편히 놀고만 있지 않았는가? 어이가 없어 한동안 말문을 잃은 내게 그가 다시 말했다.
“그래서 그 1억원을 어찌 받을 건가?”
“거기까지는 제가 미쳐 해결하지 못하고 왔습니다. 현재 유부장은 잠적한 상태로 핸드폰이 꺼져 있습니다. 집에도 연락해봤지만 전화를 받지 않고, 주변 소식에 의하면 아내와도 별거한지가 꽤 되었다고 하더군요.”
“신상무, 그걸 해결도 못하고 벌써 돌아오면 어떡하나? 한국엔 전부 사원들뿐인데…”
“사장님, 저는 연휴 동안 하루도 쉬지 않고 일하고 왔습니다. 게다가 지금 중국에서도 할 일이 너무 많습니다. 곧 있으면 뷰티끄(Beautique) 브랜드를 출시해야 합니다. 후속조치는 본사 재무팀에 맡겼으니, 조만간 어찌할지 방향이 잡힐 것입니다. 그리고 이제 나머지는 사장님이 해주셔야 할 듯합니다.”
내가 체념하듯이 한숨을 쉬며 대답하자, 민대표는 비로소 미안함이 들었는지 마음을 누그러트리며 조용히 말했다.
“재무팀에선 아마도 원칙대로 행동할 것이 분명해. 내 마음도 그 놈을 고발하고 잡아다가 본때를 보여주고 싶지만, 그러다간 내가 큰 코를 다칠지도 몰라. 괜히 소송에 휩싸여 그 놈이 훔쳐간 돈도 받지 못하고, 나는 법원에 불려 다니며 중요한 이 때에 일도 제대로 못하고, 게다가 내 명성에도 금이라도 가게 되면…. 내가 쌓아온 모든 것이 날라갈 지도 모른단 말이지. 그래서 이런 일은 조용히 아무 일도 없었다는 듯이 해결해야 할텐데…”
민대표는 이런 점에선 기가 막히게 머리가 돌아가는 사람이었다. 35년을 여러 조직에서 치열한 경쟁 속에 살아 남은 사람만의 동물적인 감이 있었다.
“유부장에게 내가 이메일을 보내야겠다. 신상무가 좀 써봐. 한 가족의 아버지로서 괜히 감방 가서 인생을 망치지 말라는 식으로 감성에 호소하는 편지를 하나 써봐.”
“네? 제가 쓰라고요?”
“그래. 너 글 잘 쓰잖아~! 인터넷에 올린 네 글 보고 내 책 편집자도 글 잘 쓴다고 칭찬하던데…”
“하지만 사장님, 전 그에 대해 개인적으로 잘 알지도 못하고…. 이런 건 사장님이 직접 생각나시는 대로 쓰는 것이 더 좋을 듯 합니다.”
순간 나는 민대표의 눈이 싸늘히 식어간 것을 놓치지 않았다. 민대표는 아무 말도 하지 않았으나, 나는 충분히 그의 무언의 시위를 알아들을 수가 있었다.
“휴~ 네. 알겠습니다. 제가 써드리겠습니다.”
나는 울컥하는 마음을 꾹 참아 누르고 민대표의 방을 나왔다. 아직 한 해도 그와 겪지 안았는데 이리 힘드니, 앞으로 몇 년을 더 어떻게 그를 견딜지 막막하기만 했다.
나의 감성을 자극하는 편지, 아니 민대표가 보낸 편지 덕분인지, 며칠 후 유부장으로부터 답장이 왔다. 그는 현재 요양원에 입원한 상태로 안정을 위해 부득이 핸드폰을 꺼 논 상대였다고 했다. 그는 친구에게 보증을 섰다가 잘못되어 급한 마음에 회사 돈에 손을 댔지만 바로 채워 넣으려고 했었다.
원래 예정대로 7월 1일에 중국 발령이 났으면, 전세금을 받아 모두 해결하고 깨끗한 마음으로 중국으로 올 수 있었던 건데, 회사가 이를 늦추는 바람에 모든 게 다 잘못되었고 그도 전세계약금을 보상해주느라 손해가 막심하게 된 것이다.
일이 안되려니 공교롭게도 그리 된 것이라 할 수 있지만, 그건 자신의 핑계일 뿐이었다. 애초부터 아무도 모르게 공금을 유용한 것은 불법이며 자신의 양심을 속인 것이니, 근본적인 원인제공자는 그 누구도 아닌 자신임을 그는 알아야 했다.
어쨌든 그는 나중에 나타나서 3회에 걸쳐 돈을 다 갚았으며, 회사는 그를 고소하지 않고 풀어줬다. 부뚜막 위의 맛있는 생선을 먹으려고 뛰어 올라 가로채서 도망가버린 고양이는 근본적으로 큰 잘못을 하였지만, 그 고양이에게 생선을 지키게 하고 내버려 둔 주인은 도망간 고양이를 잡고 생선을 되찾았다고 아무 일도 없었던 건 아닐 것이다.
분명 주인에게도 잘못이 크다. 부하의 잘못은 상사의 잘못이기도 하기 때문이다. 그 후에도 민대표는 아무 일 없이 여전히 회장의 신임을 얻고 있어 보였지만, 아마도 그 신뢰 속에 눈에 보이지도 않는 작은 금이 하나 갔을지도 모른다고 나는 생각하였다. (계속)

If the transfer to China had proceeded as originally scheduled on July 1, he said he would have received the jeonse deposit, settled everything, and come to China with a clean conscience. But because the company delayed the transfer, everything went wrong, and he suffered significant losses after having to compensate for the housing contract deposit.
One might say that things coincidentally turned out that way when circumstances went wrong, but that was merely his excuse. Using public funds secretly from the beginning was illegal and a betrayal of his own conscience, and he needed to recognize that the fundamental cause of the situation lay not with anyone else but with himself.
In any case, he later appeared and repaid the full amount in three installments, and the company chose not to file charges against him and let him go. The cat that jumped onto the kitchen platform to snatch and run away with the delicious fish committed a serious wrongdoing, but the owner who entrusted the fish to the cat and left it there cannot say that nothing happened simply because the runaway cat was caught and the fish was recovered.
Clearly, the owner also bears significant responsibility. A subordinate’s mistake is also the superior’s mistake. Even afterward, CEO Min seemed to continue receiving the chairman’s trust without any apparent issues, but I thought that perhaps within that trust, an invisible small crack might have formed.
