나는 직원들의 면담을 마치고, 청양 사무실의 인테리어 도면 변경, 사무집기 결정 및 각종 사무실 공사에 관련한 비용을 꼼꼼히 따져 보는 한편, 청양구 투자유치 공무원과의 면담, 촌장과의 사무실 임대계약 확정에 따른 잔금 지급, 법인통장 개설 등의 여러 일로 라오샨구를 떠나 청양구에 있는 인테리어회사인 삼보장식의 사무실 한 구석을 빌려 많은 시간을 보내야만 했다.
그렇게 때론 청양에서, 때론 라오샨 사무실에서 브랜드를 점검하고 향후 신제품 계획을 어떻게 수립할지 고민을 하는 동안 일 주일이 순 식간에 지나갔다. 그리고 주말이 되어서야 드디어 영업하러 안후이성에 갔다던 이상무가 돌아왔다.
나는 이상무를 만나 그간 있었던 일을 설명하며, 앞으로 나의 계획을 말하였다.
“이거 사무실 레이아웃은 내가 다시 조정했습니다.”
나는 사무실 설계도를 그에게 내밀어 보여줬다.
“이상무 방이 너무 커서 내 방 크기와 똑같이 조정하였습니다. 그러다 보니 회의실이 커져서 이렇게 회의실과 작은 접객실 형태로 회의실을 두 개로 만들었어요. 그리고 강당 구조가 잘못되어 이렇게 강단을 보며 가로로 넓어지는 형태로 바꿨답니다. 일정이 촉박한 관계로 바로 진행했으면 좋겠는데, 이상무 생각은 어떻세요?”
“네. 그렇게 하시죠. 그리고 제가 인테리어 하는 김사장을 나중에 따로 만나보겠습니다.”
이상무가 흔쾌히 승락하자, 나는 다음으로 첨예한 문제인 서이사, 서부장 이야기를 꺼냈다.
“이 두 사람은 우리 회사 조건으로 보면 경력적인 측면에서 이리 대우해 줄 수 없는 사람입니다. 특히 서부장은 송차장과 함께 일해야 하는데 송차장 보다 직급을 높이 줄 수도 없어요. 그러니 다들 직급을 하향 조정해야겠습니다.”
“맞는 말씀이세요. 그것도 뜻대로 하세요. 그런데 서이사는 그대로 유지했으면 좋겠네요. 특히 현장에서 보여지는 모습이 이사에서 갑자기 부장으로 떨어지면 현장 사업자들을 이끄는데 좋지가 않습니다.”
“하지만 이미 회사가 바뀌었고, 회사엔 체계가 있는데 이 어린 아가씨를 임원으로 채용할 수는 없습니다. 호칭만 유지하는 건 고려해 보죠.”
의외로 이상무는 이 또한 별 말없이 동의하였다.
“자~ 다음으로 브랜드에 대한 이야기인데…. 지금 리화의 브랜드들은 하나같이 상표등록이 되어 있지가 않습니다. 이렇게 되면 브랜드로써의 가치가 없어요. 확인해보니 이 일은 카이라는 직원이 하고 있던데, 앞으로 카이를 통해 브랜드 등록 가능성을 알아보고 일단 전부 C사 이름으로 등록해야겠어요.
그리고 유통기한이 얼마 안 남은 재고들이 많은데 이에 대한 처리방안은 이상무가 영업적인 측면에서 생각해보시기 바랍니다. 사장님이 다음 주 월요일에 중국에 오시니, 그때 사장님께 전반적인 회사 조직체계와 운영 방안을 함께 보고드립시다.”
“네. 그렇게 합시다.”
나는 이상무의 말을 기다렸다가 그의 대답이 나오자 그와의 회의를 마무리하며 함께 저녁식사를 하자고 말했다.
“출장 다녀오시느라 고생했는데, 오늘은 제가 한턱 낼 테니 어디 다같이 회식 한번 할까요?”
“네 좋죠. 이곳에 북한산 털게가 유명한데, 먹어봤나요?”
이상무는 기다렸다는 듯이 말하였다.
“털게요? 생전 처음 들어보는데….?”
“그래요? 그럼 우리 그리로 갑시다. 아주 맛있습니다. 그런데 값이 좀 비싸니 전부 다 가지는 말고 서부장, 서이사, 임이사까지만 함께 가죠.”
“뭐~ 그러시죠.”
우리는 걸어서 10여분 거리에 있는 털게방이란 곳으로 자리를 옮겼다. 이상무는 대게와 털게를 섞어서 푸짐하게 시켰는데, 주변에 나오는 각종 해물 반찬만해도 수십 가지로 두 개의 상위에 더 이상 음식을 놓지 못해, 음식을 2층으로 쌓아 올릴 정도였다.
쫄깃한 대게 살과는 달리 부드러운 털게는 내가 경험하지 못했던 새로운 게 맛이었다. 나는 중국에 와서 일주일만에 모처럼 맛있게 식사를 즐겼다. 더욱이 우려와는 달리 다들 허심탄회한 행동과 함께 뭔가 해보겠다는 활기찬 모습들이라, 나는 다소 긴장했던 마음을 놓으며 마음껏 술과 음식을 즐길 수가 있었다. 중국에서 맞이한 토요일 밤은 순풍의 돛단배처럼 순조롭고 즐거운 한때로 지나가고 있었다. – 계속 –

After finishing the employee interviews, I spent most of my time in Chengyang, renting a corner of the office of Sanbo Decoration, an interior design company, where I reviewed the revised office layout for the Chengyang branch, made decisions on office furniture, carefully examined various construction costs, met with Chengyang District’s investment promotion officer, finalized the lease contract with the village head and paid the balance, and opened the corporate bank account. In this way, moving back and forth between Chengyang and the Laoshan office, checking the brand status and contemplating how to establish future product plans, a week quickly passed by. And it was only by the weekend that Director Lee, who had gone to Anhui Province for sales, finally returned.
I met with him, explained what had happened during the week, and laid out my plans going forward.
“I have adjusted the office layout again.”
I handed him the office floor plan.
“Your room was too large, so I resized it to be the same as mine. As a result, the meeting room became bigger, so I divided it into two: a conference room and a small reception room. Also, the auditorium structure was poorly designed, so I changed it into a horizontal layout facing the stage. The schedule is tight, so I would like to proceed immediately. What do you think?”
“Yes, let’s do that. I will also meet with President Kim from the interior company separately later.”
As Director Lee readily agreed, I brought up the thorny issue of Director Seo and Manager Seo.

I checked and found that this work had been handled by an employee named Kai. From now on, we should look into the feasibility of registration through Kai and register all of them under Company C’s name first. After hearing his response, I wrapped up the meeting and suggested we have dinner together.

“Sounds good. Have you tried Bukhansan mitten crabs here? They are famous.”
“Mitten crabs? I have never heard of them.”
“Really? Then let’s go there. They are very delicious. But since they are quite expensive, let’s not bring everyone. Just Manager Seo, Director Seo, and Director Lim will do.”
“Alright then.”
We walked about ten minutes to a place called “Mitten Crab House.” Director Lee ordered a generous mix of snow crabs and mitten crabs. The side dishes alone—various seafood assortments—were so plentiful that the two tables could not hold them all, and the food had to be stacked in two layers.
Unlike the chewy texture of snow crab meat, the mitten crab was soft, offering me a new taste of crab I had never experienced before. For the first time since arriving in China a week ago, I truly enjoyed a satisfying meal.
Moreover, contrary to my concerns, everyone displayed candid behavior and a lively determination to make things work, which eased my tension. I was able to fully enjoy the food and drinks. That Saturday night in China passed smoothly and pleasantly, like a sailboat gliding with a favorable wind.
