평소 감자탕을 그리 좋아하지 않았던 신대리는 뒷 골목 감자탕집을 항상 지나가면서 보기만 했지, 문을 열고 들어오기는 이번이 처음이었다. 부랴부랴 서둘러 나왔지만, 이른 저녁임에도 불구하고 좁은 감자탕집은 이미 자리가 꽉 차 있었다. 신대리는 누가 누군지 구별할 수가 없어서, 들어서자 마자 누군가 자신을 찾아주길 바라면서 일부러 사람을 찾는다는 듯이 크게 두리번거렸다. 바로 그 때 기둥 옆 모퉁이에서 신대리를 부르는 소리가 들렸다.
“신대리님, 여깁니다.”
신대리는 무의식적으로 소리 나는 곳으로 고개를 돌리며 인사를 하였다. 자리를 찾아 앉으면서 그는 솔직히 처음 보는 사람들이 자신을 어떻게 아는지 조차 궁금하였다.
“안녕하세요? 이번에 새로 마케팅부에 온 신대리입니다. 반갑습니다.”
지금 마주보고 있는 사람들에 대해 아무 것도 모른다는 사실에 약간은 미안함과 두려운 마음을 갖고 신대리는 조심스럽게 인사하였다.
“네, 안녕하십니까? 저는 포장개발팀의 박과장입니다. 먼저 제가 우리 쪽 사람들을 소개시켜 드리겠습니다. 이쪽은 저랑 같이 근무하고 있는 포장개발팀의 김대리, 심대리이시고, 그리고 이쪽은 자재팀의 박대리이십니다.”
박과장은 직장생활에 어울리지 않을 것 같은 긴 머리를 정돈되지 않게 뒤로 넘겼으며, 구겨진 흰색 와이셔츠를 검은색 면바지에 억지로 쑤셔 넣고 멜빵을 걸친 모습이 대번에 함께 있는 사람들과는 전혀 다른 성향의 사람임을 확연히 알 수가 있었다. 더욱이 얼굴에 비해 상대적으로 큰 입으로 활짝 웃을 때마다 보이는 불규칙하게 벌어진 치아의 모습이 마치 만화책에 나오는 캐릭터처럼 희화적으로 보였는데, 그 큰 입에서 나오는 말 또한 나이에 걸맞지 않게 시대를 초월한 도인처럼 고어 풍의 말투로 언뜻 겉모습과 전혀 어울리지 않는 것 같으면서도 한편으로는 또 묘하게 조화를 이루는 것이 매우 인상적이었다. 그러나 그는 허술하게 생긴 것과는 달리 현재 회사에서 모든 제품의 설계를 담당하고 있는 전문 엔지니어이자 어느 곳에도 얽매이지 않는 자유로운 영혼의 소유자였다.
인사를 막 마쳤을 때 좀 전에 신대리를 찾아왔던 이대리가 마치 춥다는 듯이 손을 비비며 들어왔다.
“에~또~ 자재팀 이대리님은 이미 만나셨을 테고…. 이제 다 오셨으니 우리 일단 소주 한잔부터 하십시다, 그려~.”
박과장은 특유의 풍류스런 말투로 건배를 제창하며 잔을 들었다. 신대리도 얼른 여러 사람들의 잔과 잔을 마주치며 소주 한잔을 단숨에 비웠다. 빈 속에 들어간 소주가 위를 짜릿하게 자극하자 모두들 입에서는 ‘크~’하는 소리가 절로 나왔다.
한잔씩 잔을 비우고 재차 잔이 채워지자, 신대리는 궁금증을 참을 수 없다는 듯이 여러 사람을 둘러보며 말했다.
“오늘 좋은 자리에 초청해주셔서 감사합니다.”
신대리는 하고 싶은 말을 망설이는 것처럼 잠시 뜸을 들이다가 결심했다는 듯이 다시 말을 이었다.
“그런데, 제게 무슨 볼 일이 있으신가 보죠? 그리고 죄송하지만, 저는 여러분들을 한 분도 제대로 모르겠는데, 어떻게 저를 알고 찾아오셨는지….”
“아, 그건 말이죠….” 여지없이 박과장이 능청스러운 말투로 응대했다.
“신대리님야 우릴 잘 모르시겠지만, 신대리님께서는 우리 자재, 개발팀에서 그래도 꽤 유명하답니다. 마케팅에 어느 누가 있어, 그렇게 소신 있게 자기 주장을 경영진에 말할 수 있는 사람이 있겠습니까? 작년에 신대리님께서 그런 일을 했을 때, 우리도 그 동안 하고 싶은 얘기를 대신해준 것 같아 매우 속 시원했다는 것 아닙니까? 덕분에 눈에 가시 같았던 김상무도 날라가고 말이여~ 허허~”
여러 사람들이 박과장의 말에 수긍한다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕였다.
“아, 그랬군요. 아무튼 제게 이렇게 관심 가져 주셔서 감사합니다. 같이 한 잔 더 하시죠.”
그렇게 또 한 순배 술을 돌리고 나자 포장개발팀의 김대리가 신중하게 말을 꺼냈다.
“근데, 오늘 신대리님을 만나자고 한 것은 과거 일을 얘기하자고 그런 것은 아니고요, M&C 브랜드 계약이 완료되었다고 하는데, 제품 개발은 어떻게 진행할 것인지 궁금하기도 하고, 저희가 당부드릴 것도 있어서 입니다.”
김대리는 약간 코맹맹이 목소리에 느릿한 말투가 사투리는 쓰지 않았지만, 마치 ‘나는 충청도 출신입니다’라고 말하는 것 같았다. 그는 아니나 다를까, 충청도 대천 출신으로 부모님이 논밭 팔아 공부시켜 간신히 회사에 취직했다고 우스개 소리도 하는, 이제 갖 대리가 된 신대리보다 3살 아래의 후배였다. 그는 포장재를 개발함에 있어, 제품설계와 금형개발 거래선을 연결하고, 그 과정에 개발된 포장재 거래선을 자재구매팀에 연결시켜주는 한편, 최종적으로 생산에 포장재가 입고되면 공장 품질관리팀에서 제대로 QC(Quality Control)를 할 수 있도록 표준견본을 잡아주는 포장개발의 총체적 업무를 수행하고 있었다.
신대리는 오기 전부터 오늘 만남의 목적을 어느 정도 예상했지만, 드디어 자신이 바랬던 주제가 나오자 내심 기뻐 심장이 두근거리기 시작했다. 하지만 스스로 아무 일도 하지 못하는 사정이 한편으로는 한심하게 생각되어 다분히 침통한 표정으로 말했다.
“사실 걱정입니다. 아시다시피 저는 영업이나 시장조사 쪽에서만 있었고 마케팅 해 본적도 없어서, 어떻게 제품이 개발되는지 조차 알지도 못합니다. 그런데 이팀장은 가르쳐 주지도 않고, 다른 BM들도 지들 일하기에 치여 아무 관심도 가져주지 않으니, 마치 지난 해 했던 일에 대한 앙갚음을 당하는 것 같습니다. 솔직히 2주 동안 한 일이 아무 것도 없고, 무얼 어떻게 해야 할지도 모르겠습니다. 그저 강태공처럼 세월만 낚고 있답니다.”
신대리의 한숨 섞인 푸념에 이대리가 대답했다.
“우리도 잘 알고 있습니다. 아마도 이대로 라면 M&C 프로젝트는 제대로 진행되지 못할 것 같습니다. 그래서 하는 말인데, 우리가 도와 드리겠습니다. 저는 여기 온지 얼마 안돼서 잘 모르지만, 여기 있는 세 사람은 그 동안 여러 브랜드를 마케팅과 함께 개발해온 핵심 인재들입니다. 그러니 이번에는 아예 처음부터 개발팀과 함께 M&C 개발 프로젝트를 진행하는 것이 어떻겠습니까?”
이대리의 제안은 바로 신대리가 바라던 사항으로써, 신대리는 어둠 속에서 빛 하나를 발견한 것 같은 기분이었다. 마케팅부에서 아무도 도와주지 않는 상황에서 지금은 지푸라기라도 잡는 심정으로 어느 누구의 도움이라도 뿌리칠 수 없었기 때문이었다.
“네~, 정말 고맙습니다. 그건 진짜로 제가 바라던 일입니다.”
그러다 문득 신대리는 이런 일을 이렇게 은밀하고 조심스럽게 모여서 얘기할 필요가 있는가 하는 생각이 들어, 의아해하며 질문을 던졌다.
“그런데, 아까 김대리님이 말한 당부하고 싶단 얘기는 뭐죠? 그게 오늘 진짜 하고 싶으신 얘기일 것 같은데요?”
신대리의 질문에 김대리는 술 한잔을 마시더니 담배에 불을 붙이고는 깊게 한 모금을 빨고 나자 말을 꺼냈다.

Assistant Manager Shin, who had never been particularly fond of gamjatang, had always passed by the small back-alley gamjatang restaurant without giving it much thought. However, today was the first time he actually stepped inside. Despite hurrying out early, the narrow restaurant was already packed with people, even though it was still early in the evening. Since he couldn’t distinguish who was who, he deliberately looked around exaggeratedly, hoping someone would call out to him.
Just then, a voice called out from the corner near a pillar.
“Assistant Manager Shin, over here!”
Instinctively, he turned toward the voice and greeted the person who had called him. As he found his seat, he couldn’t help but wonder how these people, whom he was meeting for the first time, knew who he was.
“Hello, I’m Assistant Manager Shin, newly assigned to the marketing department. Nice to meet you.”
Feeling slightly guilty and uneasy about not knowing anything about the people in front of him, he greeted them cautiously.
“Yes, nice to meet you. I’m Manager Park from the Packaging Development Team. Let me introduce our team. This is Assistant Manager Kim and Assistant Manager Shim, who work with me in the Packaging Development Team, and over here is Assistant Manager Park from the Materials Team.”
Manager Park had long hair that seemed unsuited for a corporate setting, casually pushed back in an untidy manner. His wrinkled white dress shirt was stuffed into black cotton pants, held up by suspenders, giving him an appearance that immediately set him apart from the others. His relatively large mouth, which revealed irregularly spaced teeth whenever he grinned widely, made him look like a character from a comic book. His speech, which was oddly archaic and reminiscent of an old sage, didn’t quite match his appearance but somehow managed to create a strangely harmonious impression. Despite his unkempt look, he was a skilled engineer responsible for designing all the company’s products and a free-spirited individual unbound by conventional norms.
Just as the introductions wrapped up, Assistant Manager Lee, who had called out to Shin earlier, walked in, rubbing his hands together as if he were cold.
“Well then, Assistant Manager Lee from the Materials Team is already here, so now that everyone’s gathered, let’s start with a drink, shall we?”
With his signature poetic way of speaking, Manager Park raised his glass for a toast. Shin quickly clinked glasses with the others and downed his soju in one gulp. The sharp burn of the alcohol hitting his empty stomach made everyone instinctively exhale a satisfied “Ah~.”
After the first round of drinks, as their glasses were refilled, Shin couldn’t hold back his curiosity any longer. Looking around at the group, he spoke up.
“Thank you for inviting me to this gathering.”
He hesitated for a moment, as if unsure whether to continue, but then made up his mind and went on.
“But, is there a particular reason you wanted to meet me? Also, I apologize, but I don’t know any of you properly, so how did you know about me?”
“Ah, well, you see…” Manager Park responded with his usual sly tone.
“Assistant Manager Shin, while you may not know us well, you are actually quite well-known among our Materials and Development teams. Tell me, who in marketing has the courage to voice their opinions so boldly to top management? When you did that last year, it felt like you were speaking on our behalf, saying all the things we had wanted to say for so long. Thanks to you, that thorn in our side, Executive Director Kim, was finally ousted! Haha!”
The others nodded in agreement with Manager Park’s words.
“I see… Well, I appreciate your interest in me. Let’s have another round.”
As another round of drinks circulated, Assistant Manager Kim from the Packaging Development Team carefully spoke up.
“Actually, the reason we wanted to meet you today isn’t to talk about the past. We heard that the M&C brand contract has been finalized, and we were curious about how product development would proceed. We also had a few things we wanted to discuss with you.”
Kim spoke in a slow, nasal tone that, while lacking a distinct dialect, made it seem as if he were announcing, “I am from Chungcheong Province.” Sure enough, he was from Daecheon, a city in that region. He often joked that his parents had sold off farmland to fund his education, which eventually led to his hard-earned corporate job. Although he was three years younger than Assistant Manager Shin, having recently been promoted to assistant manager himself, his role was crucial. He connected product design with mold development vendors, coordinated with the procurement team for materials, and ensured that once the packaging components arrived at the factory, the quality control team had proper reference samples for inspection.
Shin had somewhat anticipated the purpose of today’s meeting before arriving, and when the topic he had been hoping for was finally brought up, his heart began to race with excitement. However, the fact that he felt completely powerless to act frustrated him, and he spoke with a somewhat somber expression.
“To be honest, I’m really worried. As you know, I’ve only worked in sales and market research—I’ve never actually done marketing. I don’t even know how products are developed. But Team Leader Lee doesn’t teach me anything, and the other brand managers are too busy with their own work to care. It feels like they’re deliberately sidelining me because of what happened last year. Honestly, I haven’t done anything in two weeks. I don’t know what to do. I’m just sitting around like an old fisherman waiting for a bite.”
Hearing Shin’s sigh-filled lament, Assistant Manager Lee responded.
“We understand. If things continue like this, the M&C project won’t move forward properly. That’s why we wanted to talk to you. I may not know much since I’m new here, but these three have worked closely with marketing on several brand developments. This time, why don’t we work together from the very beginning to develop the M&C project?”
Lee’s proposal was exactly what Shin had been hoping for. In the current situation, where no one in the marketing department was willing to help him, he was in no position to refuse any support, no matter how small.
“Wow, I really appreciate it. That’s exactly what I was hoping for.”
However, a thought suddenly crossed his mind—was there really a need to meet so discreetly to discuss something like this? Feeling curious, he asked,
“By the way, Assistant Manager Kim mentioned that there was something you all specifically wanted to ask me. I get the feeling that’s the real reason we’re here tonight. What is it?”
