카메라 테스트와 개별 면접으로 진행된 모델 선발대회의 예선전이 끝나고 후보 20명이 선발되어 대관령에 있는 리조트로 합숙훈련을 들어갔다. 후보들은 2주간 이곳에서 전문 모델의 워킹(Walking)과 댄스, 그리고 간단한 연기를 배우고 결선 무대에 설 것이다. 결선무대에는 유명 영화감독, 방송국 PD, 메이크업 아티스트, 모델협회장 등의 심사위원들을 모시고 유니버셜아트센터에서 대대적인 행사로 진행될 예정이었다.
화장품 모델이라면 얼굴이 제일 중요하겠지만, 이번 행사는 단순히 얼굴만 보고 뽑는 화장품 모델이 아니라, 미래의 스타로 성장할 가능성이 있는 사람이어야 하기 때문에, 기본적인 실력을 전문가에게 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공한 것이다. 그러나 그 이면에는 궁극적으로 다른 목적도 있었는데, 바로 연예부 기자들을 행사에 초청해서 기사화할 만한 멋진 무대가 연출되어야 하기 때문이다.
신팀장은 팀원들과 이벤트 대행사 사장과 함께 대관령을 찾았다. 이 곳에서 이틀 간 묵으면서 합숙훈련 상황도 살피고 대행사 진행팀과 본선 준비에 대해 의논하기 위해 온 것이다. 행사 주관사의 마케팅 팀장이 온다는 소식에 모델 후보들을 비롯하여 대행사 진행자들은 미리부터 행사가 순조롭게 잘 진행된다는 것을 보여주기 위해 부산을 떨었다.
특히 단체합숙은 짧은 기간 동안의 훈련이다 보니 후보들에 대한 엄격한 규율이 적용되어, 합숙 훈련을 잘 따르지 못하는 사람은 본선에 가기도 전에 탈락할 수도 있었기 때문에, 후보들간의 보이지 않는 경쟁은 더욱 치열하기만 하였다.
신팀장은 한창 모델 워킹 연습에 여념이 없는 후보들을 찾아 일일이 악수를 하며 격려하였다. 예상과는 달리 뜻밖에 젊은 팀장이 오자 후보들도 놀라는 눈치였다. 신팀장은 부끄러운 듯 너털 웃음을 남기며, 힘들지만 준비를 잘해서 유니버셜아트센터에서 한 명도 빠지지 않고 꼭 만나자는 짧은 격려의 말을 남기고 얼른 자리를 떠났다. 진행팀 회의실에 오자 이벤트 총괄 감독이 지금까지 진행현황을 보고했다.
“다들 열심히 잘 따라 오고 있는데, 후보들 중 몇 명은 좀 떨어집니다. 그 중 두 명은 아무래도 본선 무대에 서기에는 힘들 것 같습니다.”
감독은 두 명의 이력서와 사진을 신팀장에게 넘겨주며 말했다.
“그 중 여기 이 학생은 도저히 댄스가 안돼요. 단체 댄스를 해야 하는데 이 친구 때문에 진도가 안 나가서 아무래도 이 친구는 중간에 퇴소시켜야 할 것 같습니다.”
“그럼 나머지 한 명은요?”
“그 학생은 좀 더 지켜봐서 본선에 데려갈지 결정하겠습니다.”
“감독님이 저보다 더 전문가시니까, 알아서 판단해 주세요. 그리고 정 안되면 퇴소시켜야겠지만, 그래도 가능하면 무대가 꽉 차도록 한 명이라도 더 데려갈 수 있으면 그렇게 해주세요.”
신팀장의 당부에 진행팀은 알겠다며 수긍하였다. 저녁 식사를 하며 신팀장은 다시 한번 진행팀 일행들을 격려하며 내일의 일정과 미팅을 위해, 자꾸 권하는 술을 간신이 자제하고 숙소로 일찍 들어왔다. 그는 옷도 벗지 않은 채 침대 위로 털썩 쓰러져 누웠다.
그 동안 쏟아지듯 몰아 친 수 많은 일들 속에서 어떻게 하루하루가 지나가는지 모를 정도였다. 경주에서 올라오자 마자 제품개발 관련해서 포장재와 컬러 컨펌을 하였고, TFT 미팅과 매장 인테리어 및 디스플레이 방향, 그리고 광고/홍보 계획까지 그가 의사결정하고 진행해야 할 일은 한 두 가지가 아니었다. 사실 민이사가 한 시라도 신팀장을 곁에서 떼어 놓으려고 하지 않는 이유도 다 사정이 있는 것이었다.
그나마 다행이었던 것은 박성준이 사업개발팀에서 구매팀으로 자리를 옮겨 병원에 입원한 이대리 대신에 M&C구매를 담당하게 되었다는 것이다. 과거 신팀장을 응원하며 지지해준 바도 있었던 사장비서였던 지대리가 비서업무에서 벗어나 뭔가 새로운 일을 하고 싶다는 요청에 의해, 영어도 잘하는 지대리가 사업개발부에 가게 된 대신 박성준이 구매팀으로 오게 된 것이다. 물론 이 과정에서 신팀장의 적극적인 추천도 한 몫을 작용하게 되어, 평소 사업개발팀 업무가 적성에 맞지 않아 고민했던 박성준과의 관계 회복에도 좋은 계기가 되었다.
박성준은 구매 경험은 없었지만 마케팅과 사업개발팀에 있으며 쌓은 협상능력과 성실함, 그리고 정직함이 누구보다도 믿을 수 있는 사람이어서, 신팀장도 기뻐하며 박성준과의 재회를 축하하였다.
구매업무는 이미 이대리가 거래처 및 단가까지 모두 협상을 끝냈고, 한창 개발이 진행 중이었기 때문에, 경험이 부족한 박성준이라 해도 개발 일정을 챙기며 견본을 컨펌받고 생산발주를 하면 되었지만, 촉박한 일정 때문에 납기에 차질이 없도록 수 많은 거래처를 일일이 전화하고 방문해야 하는 만만치 않은 일이었다. 이점에서 신팀장은 믿을만한 박성준이 있어 더욱 안심이 되었다.
그렇게 일을 마무리하고 하루가 지난 지금은 이렇게 강원도 대관령에 와 있는 것이다. 신팀장은 샤워를 마치고 들어오며 사온 맥주 한 캔을 꺼내 들었다. 리조트의 넓은 콘도에 오늘은 모처럼 혼자 머물게 되어, 간만에 마음 차분히 내일 있을 미팅을 준비할 수 있었다. 본선대회 큐시트를 보며 VIP 입장 동선과 시간을 보고 있을 때였다. 갑자기 딩동하는 벨소리가 울렸다. 10시가 다 되어가는 시간에 누가 연락도 없이 오나 궁금했지만, 신팀장은 진행팀 중 누구겠지 하며 무심코 문을 열었다.
“안녕하세요?”
낯 익은 젊은 여자 한 명이 인사와 함께 무작정 방안으로 뛰어 들어왔다.
“어? 누구시지?”
신팀장이 자세히 보니 오늘 문제가 있다며 퇴소시켜야겠다고 후보 중 한 명이었다.
그녀는 자신을 소개하며 꼭 드릴 말씀이 있으니 시간을 조금만 내 달라고 요청하였지만, 신팀장은 늦은 시간이니 내일 진행팀에 얘기하라며 그녀를 내보내려고 했다. 하지만 그녀는 막무가내였다. 할 수 없이 신팀장은 그녀를 식탁으로 안내하며 말했다.
“그래. 왜 그러신지 여기 앉아서 간단하게 얘기해 보세요.”
“어? 맥주 드시네요? 저도 하나 마시면 안될까요?”
당돌한 그녀의 말에 할 수 없다는 듯이 신팀장은 냉장고에서 맥주 한 캔을 꺼내 그녀에게 건넸다. 그녀는 이미 자신이 어떤 처지에 있는 줄 알고 있는 듯, 자신이 잘할 수 있다며 기회를 더 달라고 사정하기 시작했다. 신팀장은 이건 자신의 권한 밖의 일이라고 설득하였지만, 그녀는 전혀 들으려고 하지 않고 계속 자신의 입장만 늘어 놓으며, 앞으로 잘할 수 있으니 평생의 꿈을 이루게 해달라며 같은 말을 되풀이 하기만 하였다.
더 이상 얘기가 안되겠다는 생각에 신팀장은 자리에서 일어나 문을 열며 말했다.
“자~ 잘 알겠으니, 이제 그만 나가 주세요. 밤도 많이 늦었습니다. 이거 규정 위반인 거 아세요?”
그때였다. 그녀는 문으로 나가는 척하다 몸을 돌려 침실로 뛰어 들었다. 신팀장이 놀라 따라 들어가자 그녀는 얼른 옷을 벗고 침대 속으로 들어가 버렸다.
“무슨 일이라도 할게요. 제발 제게 기회를 더 주세요.”
그녀의 말에 신팀장은 이렇게 까지 해야 하는 현실이 슬프고 웃기기까지도 했다. 할 수 없이 신팀장은 전화기를 들어 감독을 불렀다. 그리고 감독과 대행사 사장이 함께 와서 그녀를 설득하여 간신히 끌어내기까지 30분이 더 걸리고 난 후에야, 신팀장은 사뭇 걱정된 표정으로 감독에게 말했다.
“오늘 일은 없었던 일로 하시고 비밀을 지켜주세요. 잘못 오해가 생길지 모르니…. 그리고 그 후보는 내일 당장 퇴소시키세요. 이런 일이 또 벌어져서는 안됩니다. 철저히 주의해주시기 바랍니다.”
참으로 별의별 사건에 탈도 많고 말도 많은 행사였다. 또 얼마나 많은 일이 벌어질지 하는 생각에 그는 또 한번의 깊은 한숨을 내쉰 후, 젊은 여성들이 연예인이 되기 위해서 저렇게까지라도 하려고 한다는 현실이 슬프기도 하였다. 그는 마시던 맥주를 한숨에 들이키고 그대로 침대로 가서 잠을 청했다. 문득 조금 전까지만 해도 알몸으로 있었던 젊은 여성의 살 내음이 은은히 풍겨 나오는 듯 하였다.

Over the course of two weeks, the candidates would receive training in professional model walking, dance, and basic acting before stepping onto the final stage. The final event would take place at the Universal Art Center as a grand occasion, with a distinguished panel of judges, including renowned film directors, broadcasting producers, makeup artists, and the head of the modeling association.
While facial beauty was undoubtedly the most important criterion for a cosmetics model, this event was not just about selecting a model based on appearance. Instead, the goal was to find individuals with the potential to grow into future stars, providing them with an opportunity to learn fundamental skills from professionals. However, there was also another underlying objective—ensuring that entertainment journalists were invited to the event so that a spectacular stage performance worthy of media coverage could be created.
Shin, the team leader, visited Daegwallyeong along with his team members and the CEO of the event agency. They planned to stay for two days to observe the training progress and discuss the final preparations with the event agency’s team. Upon hearing that the marketing team leader of the event organizer was coming, the model candidates and the event staff were eager to showcase the smooth execution of the program.
Due to the short duration of the intensive training, strict regulations were imposed on the candidates, and those who could not keep up with the rigorous schedule risked being eliminated before the finals. This led to an intense yet unseen competition among the candidates.
Shin personally greeted each candidate, shaking hands and offering words of encouragement. Contrary to expectations, the candidates seemed surprised to see a young team leader. With an embarrassed chuckle, Shin left them with a short but motivating remark, urging them to prepare diligently and ensuring that all of them would meet again at the Universal Art Center. After that, he quickly moved to the meeting room where the event’s general director provided a progress report.
“Everyone is following the program well, but a few candidates are falling behind. Among them, two are particularly struggling and may not be able to make it to the final stage,” the director said, handing Shin their resumes and photos.
“One of them simply cannot keep up with the dance routine. Since they need to perform as a group, we’re struggling to progress, so I think we may need to send this person home early.”
“What about the other one?”
“We’ll observe them a little longer before deciding whether to take them to the finals.”
“You’re the expert here, so I’ll trust your judgment. If necessary, they may need to leave, but if there’s any way to bring even one more person to fill out the stage, please consider it.”
The staff nodded in agreement.
During dinner, Shin once again encouraged the team and, in preparation for the next day’s schedule and meetings, managed to resist repeated offers of drinks, heading to his room early. He collapsed onto the bed, not even bothering to take off his clothes.
The overwhelming number of tasks in recent days had made time fly by without him realizing it. As soon as he returned from Gyeongju, he had to approve packaging and color selections for product development, attend TFT meetings, oversee store interior design and display strategies, and make decisions on advertising and PR plans—his responsibilities seemed endless. It was understandable why Director Min didn’t want to let Shin out of his sight for even a moment.
Fortunately, there was some good news—Park Sung-jun had been reassigned from the Business Development Team to the Purchasing Team, taking over M&C purchasing in place of Manager Lee, who was hospitalized. Previously a secretary to the company president, Ji had once supported Shin and had expressed a desire to move away from secretarial duties to take on a new challenge. Since Ji was fluent in English, she was transferred to the Business Development Team, and in her place, Park Sung-jun moved to the Purchasing Team. Shin had actively recommended him for the role, which turned out to be a welcome change for Park, who had struggled to find fulfillment in the Business Development Team.
Although Park had no prior experience in purchasing, his negotiation skills, diligence, and integrity, honed through his work in marketing and business development, made him a reliable choice. Shin was pleased to reunite with him and congratulated him on the transition.
The purchasing responsibilities themselves were manageable since Manager Lee had already negotiated with suppliers and finalized pricing, and the product development process was well underway. However, given the tight deadlines, Park still had to personally contact and visit numerous suppliers to ensure that delivery schedules were met. Despite the challenges, Shin felt reassured, knowing he had someone he could trust in Park Sung-jun.
Having wrapped up his work, Shin found himself in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon-do, the following day. After taking a shower, he grabbed a can of beer he had bought earlier. Tonight, he was alone in the spacious resort condo, giving him a rare chance to calmly prepare for the meeting scheduled for the next day. As he reviewed the final competition’s cue sheet, checking the VIP entrance routes and timing, the doorbell suddenly rang. It was already close to 10 PM—who would show up unannounced at this hour? Curious, Shin assumed it must be one of the event staff and absentmindedly opened the door.
“Hello?”
A familiar young woman greeted him and abruptly stepped inside without hesitation.
“Huh? Who are you?”
Upon taking a closer look, Shin realized that she was one of the contestants—the very one the director had mentioned earlier as a potential dropout.
She introduced herself and pleaded for a moment of his time, saying she had something important to discuss. However, Shin, noting the late hour, told her to speak with the event team tomorrow and tried to send her away. Yet, she refused to leave. With no other choice, Shin guided her to the dining table and said,
“Alright. Have a seat and tell me why you’re here.”
“Oh? You’re drinking beer? Can I have one too?”
Taken aback by her boldness, Shin reluctantly took another can from the fridge and handed it to her. She seemed fully aware of her precarious situation and began desperately pleading for another chance, insisting that she could improve. Shin explained that the decision was out of his hands, but she refused to listen, repeatedly emphasizing that she could do better and begging him to help her achieve her lifelong dream.
Feeling that the conversation was going nowhere, Shin stood up, opened the door, and said,
“Alright, I get it. But you need to leave now. It’s really late. Do you realize this is a violation of the rules?”
At that moment, she pretended to head for the door but suddenly turned around and ran into the bedroom. Startled, Shin followed her, only to see her hastily stripping off her clothes and slipping under the covers.
“I’ll do anything… Just please give me another chance,” she pleaded.
Shin found the situation both tragic and absurd. Sighing, he picked up the phone and called the director. It took another 30 minutes for the director and the event company’s CEO to arrive, calm her down, and finally escort her out. Once she was gone, Shin turned to the director with a serious expression and said,
“Let’s pretend this never happened and keep it confidential. I don’t want any misunderstandings. And make sure she is sent home first thing tomorrow. This cannot happen again. Please handle it thoroughly.”
This event was full of unexpected incidents and controversies. He couldn’t help but wonder how many more problems would arise before it was over. Letting out a deep sigh, he thought about how desperate some young women were to become celebrities, willing to go to such lengths.
He took one final swig of his beer, then headed straight to bed. The faint scent of the young woman, who had been unclothed just moments ago, still lingered in the air.
