The easiest way to enter a consumer’s mind is to be first. The Law of Leadership, which comes first in The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, also states, “It is better to be first than it is to be better.”
Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. Then who was the second person? The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest; what is the second highest? The first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean was Charles Lindbergh; who was the second person? The first president of South Korea was Rhee Syngman; who was the second president?
Most people remember the first, but rarely remember what comes after. Therefore, the brand that dominates the customer’s memory is not necessarily the best brand, but the brand that arrived first.
However, it is difficult for everyone to be first. If so, it is better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.
As mentioned earlier, while people do not remember the second person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, they remember Amelia Earhart, the third person to cross the Atlantic. The reason is that she was the first female aviator to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
Similarly, people remember George Washington as the first president of the United States and may forget the second, but they remember Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, because he was the first president to emancipate the slaves in America. Therefore, to occupy the customer’s mind, you must become the first protagonist in a segmented market.
However, simply being first to the market is not enough. In any category, leading brands are almost always those that first established a place in the customer’s memory.
In the past, Christopher Columbus believed that because the Earth was round, continuing east would lead to India, so he borrowed ships from Queen Isabella of Spain and set sail eastward. This was because acquiring and selling India’s abundant spices—which were precious in Europe at the time—could yield great wealth.
However, he arrived at a completely different place, yet believed it was India. As a result, a strange mishap occurred where the indigenous people living there were called Indians, a name that remains to this day; that place was not India, but the New World of the Americas.
Therefore, Columbus could not bring back Indian spices; instead, he exploited gold, brutally captured the native inhabitants, called them Indians, and sold them into slavery. Because the indigenous peoples of the Americas were first established as the brand “Indian” in the minds of Westerners at that time, the term “Indian” has not been easily changed even after hundreds of years.
However, Amerigo Vespucci announced that the place was not India but a new continent, and that unnamed new continent was eventually named the Americas after him. If Columbus had realized it was a new continent, the name of the American continent might have become Columbia. In short, it was not Columbus, who discovered it first, but Amerigo Vespucci, who established the perception of a new continent in the public mind, that enabled the place to become America.
In the same vein, although the first computer is said to be Sperry-Rand, IBM entered the customer’s perception first, which is why IBM remains synonymous with computers today.
The same was true for the acne cosmetics brand a-Solution, which I launched when I worked as the marketing team leader at Aekyung Industrial. At that time, Dongsung Pharmaceutical’s AC Care brand had already been launched earlier. However, due to legal issues, AC Care was unable to conduct any promotional or advertising activities, failing to establish itself as an acne cosmetic in the consumer’s mind. Instead, Aekyung Industrial’s a-Solution, which came out later, occupied customer perception and became the No. 1 acne cosmetics brand.
The modifier “first” always accompanies the birth of No. 1 brands, such as Coca-Cola in soft drinks and the iPhone in smartphones. In South Korea, Bacchus, the first energy tonic, still maintains its position unshaken despite numerous copycat products that have emerged. People even refer to other company brands like Alps collectively as Bacchus. This is due to the brand power of Bacchus being the first.
Additionally, Amorepacific’s Sulwhasoo, the first traditional Korean herbal cosmetics brand in Korea, has maintained its top position in the herbal cosmetics market domestically for a long period. Although LG Household & Health Care’s History of Whoo has recently succeeded in China with an image of royalty and a high-price policy—reportedly overtaking Sulwhasoo there—Sulwhasoo, as the first herbal cosmetic, still holds the No. 1 spot domestically.
A No. 1 brand that takes root first in the consumer’s memory becomes a common word in daily life, often used as a proper noun or verb. The No. 1 brand in facial tissues is Kleenex. Kleenex, the first facial tissue, subsequently became synonymous with all tissues, to the point where consumers would ask for Kleenex whenever purchasing any facial tissue.
Scotch Tape is another similar example. Scotch is a brand name, but people refer to cellophane tape as Scotch Tape. After the Korean War, when the U.S. military brought in military vehicles named ‘Jeep’, all four-wheel-drive vehicles were once referred to as “Jeep cars.”
Despite the recent release of numerous cryptocurrencies, people collectively refer to cryptocurrency as Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency. Furthermore, in the United States, people use “to Google” for searching the internet and “to Xerox” for making copies as actual verbs in sentences.
Therefore, the fastest and most powerful way to take root in consumer perception is to become the first to occupy the consumer’s memory within a segmented market.
