While the word “Needs” is typically translated into Korean as “필요” (necessity), in marketing, it is approached as fundamental human desires. In that sense, rather than a mere “necessity,” it is more appropriate to view it as a “desire”—something essential that must be fulfilled.
Desires are the most basic conditions required for humans to be happy. They usually lie dormant within our minds, unactivated, but flare up whenever triggered by external stimuli.
The academic discipline that primarily deals with human desires is psychology. To study the psychological desires and motivations behind consumers purchasing specific brands or products, marketing has borrowed heavily from psychology. That is why “Consumer Behavior,” one of the core subjects in marketing, delves deeply into the psychology of consumer motivation.
In this regard, when discussing the fundamentals of human desire, one cannot skip psychologist Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs.” Maslow argued that human behavior is motivated by basic needs, structured in a five-level pyramid:
- Physiological Needs
- Safety Needs
- Love and Belonging Needs
- Esteem (Respect) Needs
- Self-Actualization Needs
The first level begins with satisfying humanity’s most fundamental needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. After all, humans are fundamentally animals that need to eat, sleep, and survive. Looking back at the COVID-19 pandemic a few years ago, when people couldn’t work and struggled to make a living, they couldn’t even think about higher-level needs.
Even when governments urged people not to go out due to the virus, they still ventured out to earn money. Only when these basic physiological needs—like food and shelter—are met do people begin to crave safety from personal, economic, health, or natural disaster risks.
I personally had to undergo a 14-day quarantine twice during COVID-19—once in China and once in Korea. Being unable to step out the door and living completely isolated from society was barely humanly bearable—and that was just for 14 days!
This shows how strong the human desire is to belong to an organization and a society. No matter how “wise” a prison life one might lead after committing a crime, the punishment works precisely because it deprives the offender of fulfilling their social need for belonging.
What good is eating well, living comfortably, and having a job if you are constantly chewed out by a preachy boss and receive zero recognition? People pushed to such extremes sometimes even take their own lives out of sheer misery. Humans don’t become happy simply by belonging to a society; they become happy only when they are recognized and respected within it.
This is why the “newly rich” love to show off their status, fame, and prestige, boasting about their external success. However, seeking respect from others through external displays is a lower level of esteem.
What people truly need is a higher level of internal esteem—where others naturally respect them, and they can respect themselves (self-respect). This manifests through competence, confidence, independence, and freedom.
Finally, humans live to fulfill the need for Self-Actualization—maximizing their capabilities, growing into a creative realm, fulfilling their potential, and realizing their dreams.
Philosophers have talked about this level since ancient times, but frankly, except for Jesus or the Buddha, I’m not sure who has actually achieved true self-actualization. Of course, there are countless people who let go of greed, find contentment in small achievements, and fulfill their modest dreams. In the end, perhaps knowing how to let go is the key to reaching this ultimate need.
However, since this is neither a philosophy class nor a psychology lecture—but a thoroughly worldly marketing session—we should simply move on with the understanding that human beings’ endless desires create the motivation for action.
As a side note, while Maslow’s hierarchy generally progresses in order, not everyone goes through these steps sequentially to reach the highest level.
