그런데 일은 엉뚱한 데서 터졌다. 이미 발령이 나서 이사준비도 하고 있던 그를 민대표가 갑자기 보류한 것이다. 민대표는 뭔가 꺼림칙하다며 그의 중국발령을 차일피일 미루다가, 끝내는 2개월이나 훌쩍 지난 9월을 맞이하게 되었다.
그 바람에 유부장은 난리가 났다. 이미 중국으로 이사 가기 위해 집도 전세를 주었는데, 계약을 파기하게 되어 계약금의 두 배를 물어줘야 하는 등, 나름 자신이 세웠던 계획이 뒤틀어지자 뭔가 쫒기는 사람처럼 초조해 하였다. 그러다 결국 일이 터지고 말았다.
민대표는 매월 보고받았던 법인카드 사용내역 중, 자신이 사용하는 카드 이외에 직원들이 공동으로 사용하는 카드에 대한 보고가 최근 3개월이 누락된 점을 뒤늦게 깨우쳤다. 매번 두 개의 카드 사용내역이 함께 왔었는데, 어느 순간 하나가 계속 누락되어 온 것을 그도 그 동안 여러 가지 신경 쓰이는 일들 때문에 놓치고 만 것이다.
그는 얼른 한국에 있는 유부장에게 전화를 해서 최근 3개월 간의 법인카드 사용내역을 보내달라고 지시하였으나, 일주일이 지나도 받아 볼 수가 없었다. 그는 참다 못해 전화로 유부장에게 큰 소리를 내었는데도, 유부장은 보고를 자꾸 미루기만 하였다.
결국 민대표는 회계직원을 통해 직접 내용을 전달받아서야 수백만원에 달하는 강남 룸싸롱 내역을 발견할 수가 있었다. 모든 사람들이 중국으로 넘어와 한 푼이라도 아끼며 생존을 위해 발버둥을 치고 있는 판에, 그는 접대라는 명목으로 돈을 흥청망청 쓰고 있었으며 이것이 들킬까 봐 보고서류도 슬쩍 숨겼던 것이다.
이것이 들통나자 유부장은 사직서를 내고 바로 하루만에 잠적해버렸다. 민대표는 노발대발하며 당장 그를 찾아 자초지종을 따지고 술값은 개인이 부담시키도록 하는 한편, 급한 대로 내가 인수인계를 받도록 하여, 나는 급히 국경절 연휴임에도 불구하고 남들 다 쉬는 이 황금연휴 기간에 홀로 한국으로 떠나는 비행기에 몸을 싣게 되었다.
그러나 나는 무엇부터 어떻게 일해야 할지 망연자실하였다. 어차피 재무분야의 전문가도 아닌 나는 유부장이 준비한 절차에 따라 인수인계를 받으며, 이 참에 회계장부도 꼼꼼히 감사하고자 하였는데, 그가 나타나질 않으니 어디서부터 어떻게 시작할지를 모를 지경이었다.
일단 나는 회계 여직원으로 하여금 유부장에게 계속 전화를 하도록 하였으나, 그는 전화를 받지 않았다. 그래도 다행인 건 전화기가 꺼져있지 않고 신호가 가는 걸 보면, 그가 완전히 잠수 탄 것은 아님에 분명했다.
그러자 나는 혹시 모르는 전화로 걸면 받을지도 모르겠다는 생각에, 중국에 가기 전 사용했던 한국 핸드폰으로 전화를 해봤더니 용케도 한참의 신호 후에 그가 전화를 받았다.
“여보세요, 유부장님. 신상무입니다. 오늘 만나기로 한 거 잊으셨나요?”
전화기 넘어 당황한 유부장의 목소리가 띄엄띄엄 들려왔다.
“아…네…. 그랬었죠. 근데 제가 몸이 안 좋아서 당분간 병원치료를 받아야 해서…. 나가기 힘들겠는데요.”
“지금 병원에 입원하신 것도 아닌 것 같은데… 오늘 몸이 안 좋으시면 내일이라도 오시기 바랍니다. 제가 유부장님 만나려고 일부러 중국에서 넘어오지 않았습니까?”
전화기 넘어 자동차 소리가 들리는 거나, 다소 가뿐 듯한 그의 숨소리를 보면, 그는 지금 어딘가를 바쁘게 걸어가고 있는 것이 틀림없었다.
“네…. 죄송합니다. 제가 지금 병원 가는 중이라, 일단 병원 가서 진료를 받은 후 다시 연락 드리겠습니다.”
유부장은 그렇게 말하며 얼른 전화를 끊어 버리곤 아예 전화기를 꺼버렸다. 나는 아무래도 뭔가 이상했다. 기껏 수백만 원의 법인카드 사용 때문에 회사를 그만두고 잠적할 이유가 없었기 때문이다. 잘못을 인정하고 돈도 물어내고 한 번 혼나고 나면 그만일 뿐인데…. 게다가 중국으로 넘어오기를 바랐던 사람이 아닌가?
나는 이상하게 생각하며 그가 남기고 간 인수인계 서류를 회계직원과 검토하였다. 그곳에는 자신의 퇴직금에서 술값을 상계 처리하겠다고 쓰여 있었다. 그렇다면 술값 때문에 도망 갈 이유가 없지 않은가? 나는 부쩍 의심이 들어 회계장부를 처음부터 들여다보기로 하고, 그룹본사 재무팀의 전문가에게 도움을 요청하였다. (계속)

However, the incident erupted from an unexpected place. Manager Yoo, who had already received his transfer order and was preparing to move, suddenly had his assignment put on hold by CEO Min. He quickly called Manager Yoo in Korea and instructed him to send the corporate card usage details for the past three months, but even after a week he received nothing. Unable to endure it any longer, he raised his voice over the phone, yet Manager Yoo kept delaying the report.
In the end, CEO Min received the details directly through an accounting staff member and discovered charges amounting to several million won at a Gangnam room salon. While everyone else had moved to China and was struggling to survive while saving every penny, he had been spending money lavishly under the pretext of client entertainment, and he had quietly hidden the report documents for fear that this would be discovered.
Once this came to light, Manager Yoo submitted his resignation and disappeared the very next day. Furious, CEO Min ordered that he be found immediately to clarify the circumstances and that the drinking expenses be charged personally to him. At the same time, as an urgent measure, he instructed that I receive the handover, and despite the National Day holiday, I found myself boarding a flight alone to Korea during this golden vacation period when everyone else was resting.
However, I was at a complete loss as to where and how to begin the work. Since I was not a financial expert anyway, I intended to receive the handover according to the procedures prepared by Manager Yoo and take the opportunity to thoroughly audit the accounting books. From the other end of the phone came Manager Yoo’s flustered voice in broken fragments.
“Ah… yes… that’s right. But I’m not feeling well and need to receive hospital treatment for a while… I don’t think I can come out.”
“It doesn’t sound like you’re admitted to a hospital right now… If you’re not feeling well today, please come tomorrow at least. I came all the way from China specifically to meet you.”
Judging from the sound of cars over the phone and his somewhat hurried breathing, it was clear that he was walking somewhere in a hurry.
“Yes… I’m sorry. I’m on my way to the hospital right now, so I’ll go there first and get examined, then I’ll contact you again.”
With that, Manager Yoo quickly ended the call and turned off his phone altogether. Something felt strange to me. There was no reason for someone to resign from the company and disappear merely over several million won charged on a corporate card. He could simply admit his mistake, repay the money, and receive a reprimand—that would be the end of it. Moreover, wasn’t he the one who had wanted to come to China?
Feeling suspicious, I reviewed the handover documents he had left behind together with the accounting staff member. In them, he had written that the drinking expenses would be offset against his severance pay. If so, there was no reason for him to run away because of the drinking expenses. Growing increasingly suspicious, I decided to examine the accounting books from the very beginning and requested assistance from a financial expert on the group headquarters’ finance team.
