124. . [A Bang and Clatter Story in China 124. .]

China is changing—and it is changing faster than ever before. The transformation taking place in twenty-first-century China is more intense and dynamic than at any other point in its history.

Since embracing a market economy, China has evolved from being the world’s factory into one of the world’s most powerful consumer markets. The China that once relied on imitating advanced technologies no longer exists. Today, China stands at the forefront of the internet, mobile technology, drones, electric vehicles, aviation, shipbuilding, and countless other industries.

The Chinese cosmetics industry is no exception. Once dominated by foreign brands that controlled nearly 80 percent of the market, it has now broken out of its shell. Just as Chinese companies have previously overtaken foreign competitors in other industries, China’s cosmetics sector is increasingly becoming the domain of Chinese brands, even while serving as the battleground where Korean brands compete fiercely for market share.

Today, no one can accurately predict China’s future simply by studying its past and present. Remaining complacent or relying on superficial knowledge is no longer enough to keep pace with the speed of its transformation.

Yet many Korean companies continue to underestimate China. They dismiss Xiaomi as nothing more than “a lucky accident from the mainland.” They mistakenly believe that Chinese consumers will eagerly buy anything labeled “Made in Korea.” Some even bypass China’s regulatory requirements, importing cosmetics through illegal channels without obtaining the necessary hygiene approvals, relying on every possible loophole to enter the market.

Such practices belong to opportunistic traders. If the goal is to make quick money and disappear just as quickly, perhaps that approach is acceptable. But anyone who truly hopes to build a lasting company in China while engaging in such behavior is like a moth drawn to a flame—destined to perish in the very fire it cannot resist.

That is why anyone doing business in China must respect Chinese law. Sustainable businesses can only be built on a foundation of legal compliance and transparent management. At the same time, we must set aside any misplaced pride or sense of superiority simply because we are Korean. We must approach the Chinese people with genuine respect and sincerity. That is the philosophy by which I have chosen to live and work in China.

Inspired by the modest success I achieved by arriving in China ahead of many others, numerous Korean and Chinese companies soon entered the market using similar strategies. Just when I felt we were finally ready to compete against the world’s leading brands as well as China’s domestic champions, I found myself facing a new reality—I now had to compete against fellow Korean brands. Unfortunately, that was the reality of the market, and it became yet another challenge I had to overcome.

As The Art of War reminds us through the principle of Zhàn Shèng Bù Fù (戰勝不復): Victory in one battle will never be repeated in exactly the same way. Across more than 2,500 years, Sun Tzu’s wisdom continues to remind me that becoming intoxicated by today’s success and allowing arrogance to take hold is the quickest path toward tomorrow’s failure.

China itself remains vast and unchanged, standing where it has always stood. What disappear are the countless companies and individuals who once occupied that land. One day I, too, will fade with time. But I hope the company I helped build will continue to stand there, breathing and growing alongside Chinese consumers for generations to come. That is why I continue to travel across this vast nation, pursuing my dream of building a century-old company that will earn the enduring trust and affection of the Chinese people.

Now, only one thing remains for me—to keep running forward with unwavering determination.

If I continue running long enough, perhaps one day I will find myself soaring through the sky. The invisible wings that have long whispered behind my back will finally unfold, as though they can no longer be restrained. Without even realizing I possessed them, I will spread those magnificent wings and rise naturally into the heavens.

From above, I will look down upon the breathtaking expanse of China, leaving my footprints across every corner of that immense land. One by one, hope will find its way back to me, transforming into new dreams and leading me once again into the endless journey called life.
