인식의 싸움 103. 사직서 제출 [Battle of Perception 103. Submission of a resignation letter]

그러고 1년 후 인천국제공항. 저녁 시간에도 공항은 수많은 여행객으로 엄청나게 혼잡하였다. 회사를 그만 두고 중국 칭다오로 떠나는 신팀장의 옆엔 조윤희가 함께 있었다. 

1년 6개월 전, M&C 브랜드가 크게 성공하여 프랑스로 단체여행을 떠나기 전, 신팀장은 이 모든 성공의 밑거름에 조윤희가 있었음을 뒤늦게 깨닳게 되었다. 그는 여행을 떠나기 전 날에 조윤희를 찾아갔다. 다행히 그녀는 다른 남자와 선을 보지 않았고, 그 흔한 문자도 자주 보내지 않았던 야속한 그를 계속 기다려 주고 있었다. 그리고 신팀장도 언제나 마음 속에 그녀가 있었음을 확연히 알 수가 있었다. 그는 드디어 그녀에게 사랑을 고백하였고, 바쁜 와중에도 틈틈이 그녀와 데이트를 하며 행복한 시간을 보내었다. 

  그는 그 동안 국내외 경제동향과 화장품 시장현황, 그리고 한류의 영향 등을 볼 때, 극도로 성숙되고 포화된 국내 화장품 시장의 미래는 앞으로 중국에 있음을 예측할 수 있었다. 그래서 중국어도 배우고, 중국의 현실을 몸으로 직접 느끼기 위해 어학연수를 1년간 다녀오기로 하고, 사랑하는 조윤희와 함께 어학연수 길에 올랐다. 

금융위기에 몰린 한국경제는 IMF 때처럼 휘청거렸고, 남들은 회사에서 쫒겨나지 않으려고 발버둥을 치는 시기에, 잘나가는 회사를 그만 두고 중국으로 떠나는 그야말로 거대한 풍차에 무작정 돌진하는 동키호테 같은 인물일 지도 모르는 일이었다. 그러나 그는 떠나고만 싶었다. 직장 생활 10년 동안 한번도 제대로 쉬어본 적도 없었다. 한번도 자신을 위해 시간과 돈을 투자해 본적도 없었다. 그는 너무 지쳐있었고 이제는 여유와 재충전이 필요할 때였다.

  에이솔루션의 성공적인 론칭을 끝내고, 다음 달 그는 기다렸다는 듯이 사직서를 제출했다. 한 때는 에이솔루션 론칭을 포기하고 떠날까도 생각했었다. 하지만 박대리와 허진희의 만류에 그는 브랜드 론칭만 어떡하든 책임지겠다고 팀원들에게 약속을 하였고, 말한 대로 론칭이 되자마자 바로 사직서를 내고 만 것이다. 

모든 사람들이 깜짝 놀랐다. 거대 두 브랜드의 성공으로 마이더스의 손이라는 소리를 들으며 회사에서 가장 잘 나가는 팀장이 그만 둔다는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없었다. 그래도 에이솔루션이 론칭되면 마음을 바꿀지도 모른다는 일말의 기대를 했던 박대리와 허진희도 놀라긴 마찬가지였다. 

  민상무는 그의 사직서를 끝까지 처리해주지 않으려 했다. 그러자 그는 회사에 휴가를 내고 전국 방방곡곡을 떠돌다가, 2주 만에 돌아와서는 갑자기 중국 행을 통보했다. 서울을 벗어나 충청도를 거쳐 전라도와 경상도 주요 도시들을 주유천하(周遊天下)하고 돌아온 그가 본 한국의 화장품 시장은 암담했다. 

우후죽순으로 늘어난 브랜드숍들은 과거 화장품 전문점들이 헤어나지 못했던 치열한 가격경쟁으로 치달리고 있었는데, 이는 M&C 브랜드숍도 예외는 아니었다. 그는 이 좁은 대한민국 땅덩어리에서 이토록 많은 화장품회사들이 경쟁을 하는 게 놀라웠다. 그러다 이젠 이 땅을 벗어나는 게 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다. 한 마디로 제품이나 브랜드의 차별화가 아니라, 지역의 차별화를 해야 한다는 것이다. 그는 이제 전쟁터를 거대한 대륙으로 옮겨야겠다는 생각으로 가슴이 뛰기 시작하였다.

  그래서 그는 회사에 과감히 사표를 내고 중국으로 어학연수를 가겠다고 했다. 회사가 아무리 잡아도, 이 회사의 테두리 안에서 도저히 그는 새로운 꿈을 이어갈 수가 없다고 생각하였다. 그는 단호했다. 그리고 회사는 결국 그를 더 이상 잡지 못했다. 민상무는 중국어 실력으로 재무장해서 다시 돌아오라는 말로 아쉬움을 표했지만, 그것이 모두 흔한 인사치레의 말임을 그는 누구보다도 잘 알고 있었다.

One year later, Incheon International Airport. Despite the late hour, the airport was packed with countless travelers. Standing among them was Team Leader Shin, now leaving the company and heading to Qingdao, China—with Jo Yoon-hee by his side.

Eighteen months earlier, just before departing on a company group trip to France to celebrate the M&C brand’s major success, Shin had come to a belated realization: behind all his achievements stood Jo Yoon-hee. The night before the trip, he went to see her. Fortunately, she hadn’t started dating anyone else, nor had she given up on him, despite his cold indifference and infrequent texts. And Shin now knew clearly that she had always held a special place in his heart. He finally confessed his love to her, and despite his busy schedule, they managed to go on dates and enjoy time together.

Through close analysis of domestic and international economic trends, the cosmetics industry landscape, and the influence of the Korean Wave, Shin foresaw that the oversaturated, hyper-mature Korean cosmetics market was nearing its limits, and that the future lay in China. He began studying Chinese and decided to physically immerse himself in the country’s reality by embarking on a year-long language study abroad—together with the woman he loved.

It was a time of financial crisis in Korea. The economy was staggering, much like during the IMF era. While others were desperately clinging to their jobs, Shin, at the peak of his career, chose to leave it all and go to China. To some, he may have seemed like a modern Don Quixote charging headlong into a giant windmill. But he just wanted to get away. In his 10 years of professional life, he had never truly rested, never invested time or money in himself. He was burned out—and it was time for rest and renewal.

After successfully launching A-Solution, he submitted his resignation the following month, as he had long intended. At one point, he had considered walking away before the launch even happened. But persuaded by Park Daeri and Heo Jin-hee, he promised his team that he would see the brand through to launch—and once that promise was fulfilled, he followed through by resigning immediately.

Everyone was shocked. The star team leader, known as the Midas of the company after launching two massively successful brands, was quitting. Even Park and Heo, who’d hoped he might change his mind after the A-Solution launch, were stunned.

Director Min refused to process the resignation at first. So Shin took vacation and wandered across the country for two weeks before suddenly announcing his plan to go to China. Having journeyed through Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang Provinces, he returned with a sobering view of the domestic cosmetics market.

Brand shops had sprung up like mushrooms after rain, and were now locked in the same brutal price wars that once plagued traditional cosmetics retailers. M&C brand shops were no exception. Shin was astonished by how many cosmetics companies were fighting over such a small slice of land. That’s when he knew—it was time to leave. The key wasn’t product differentiation or branding—it was regional differentiation. His heart began to race at the thought of relocating the battlefield to the vast continent across the sea.

He boldly handed in his resignation and declared his plan to study abroad in China. No matter how hard the company tried to keep him, Shin believed that staying within its confines would stifle his new dreams. He was resolute. In the end, the company had no choice but to let him go. Director Min, clearly regretful, told him to come back after improving his Chinese—but Shin, more than anyone, knew such words were merely polite formalities.
