신대리는 약간은 어색한 느낌과 불안한 마음으로 이팀장에게 인사를 했다. 1년이 지난 지금 다시 이팀장 밑에서 일하게 될 줄은 상상도 못했던 그로서는, 사실 과거 그 때문에 김상무가 물러나고 이팀장도 회사를 떠날 위기까지 갔던 사실을 떠 올리며, 참으로 질긴 악연의 고리를 끊지 못함이 안타까웠다.
이팀장은 의외로 호탕하게 웃으며 신대리를 반겼다. 지난 일은 모두 잊고 우리 함께 다시 시작해보자는 이팀장의 밝은 환영 속에서도 신대리는 그의 표리부동(表裏不同)한 속마음을 어렵지 않게 읽을 수 있었다.
신대리는 이팀장을 대면하고 36계에 나오는 소리장도(笑裏藏刀)가 생각났다. 즉 이팀장은 가슴에 비수를 숨기고 있으면서도 겉으로는 상냥하게 상대방을 대하는 것만 같아 보였다. 아예 이팀장이 회사의 대의 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 얼굴 보며 일하게 됐지만, 그 동안 너 때문에 힘들었고 난 지금도 네가 싫다는 등의 솔직한 마음을 보였다면 오히려 이팀장을 대하기가 더 좋았을 것이라는 아쉬움이 떠나지 않는 만남이었다.
이제는 어엿한 BM으로 자리를 잡은 신대리는 드디어 그도 저들과 동등한 존재라는 생각에 나름대로 감개무량함을 느꼈지만, 1년 전 시장조사 담당자로서 소외를 받았던 마케팅부 시절이나, BM으로 돌아온 지금이나 따돌림 당하기는 별반 다른 것이 없음을 느꼈다.
일단 과거 신대리가 일으킨 사건에 대해 불만을 가진 BM들도 없지 않아 있었으며, 마케팅부의 철저한 BM제도는 어느 누구도 다른 브랜드에 서로 관여하지 않도록 되어있어서, 모두들 자신도 모르게 지독한 개인주의적 성향을 가지게 되었기 때문이다. 그러다 보니, 처음 형식적인 인사치레 이후에는 모두들 업무적으로든 개인적으로든 신대리를 무관심으로 대하는 것이 어쩌면 극히 자연스러운 일이었을지도 모른다.
M&C와 라이센싱 계약이 체결되었으면, 이제는 M&C를 브랜드숍으로 할지 말지를 얼른 결정하여 유통에 맞는 제품을 개발해야 하는 일이 가장 급선무임에도 불구하고, 경험이 전혀 없는 신대리는 2주가 지나도록 아무 것도 할 수가 없었다. 이팀장은 신대리에게 어떤 지시도 내리지 않았으며, 신대리가 동료 BM들에게 궁금증을 질문을 해도 일이 바쁘다는 핑계로 BM들도 별다른 도움을 주지 않았다.
그렇게 2주를 허송세월로 보낸 금요일 저녁, 신대리는 언제나처럼 남이 쓴 품의서와 계획서들을 읽으며 하루를 간신히 때우고는 주섬주섬 자리를 정리하며 퇴근 준비를 하였다. 어디서부터 이 복잡하게 얽힌 실타래를 풀어야 할지 막막하기만 하여, 신대리는 자리에서 일어나며 이제는 습관처럼 절로 큰 한숨을 내쉬었다.
그때 자재구매팀 이대리가 찾아왔다. 이대리는 신대리보다 약간 작은 보통 이상의 키에, 여자처럼 하얀 피부 위론 반곱슬머리를 짧고 가지런하게 정리한 깔끔하고 단정한 사람처럼 보였다. 이대리도 신대리가 마케팅부로 발령 날 때 해외팀에서 자재구매팀으로 발령 난 신출내기 팀원이었으며, 그 동안 국내 영업 쪽에 계속 속해 있었던 신대리는 한번도 그를 만난 적이 없었다.
“저기…. 신대리님이세요?”
“네, 누구시죠?”
“아, 전 자재팀 이대리라고 합니다. 이번에 자재팀으로 자리를 옮겨서 인사차 왔지요.”
“아~, 죄송합니다. 제가 먼저 인사 드렸어야 했는데, 저도 온지 얼마 안돼서 누가 누군지, 뭐가 뭔지 똥오줌 못 가리고 있습니다.”
신대리는 미안하고 부끄러운 마음에 악수를 청하며 인사를 하였지만, 갑자기 이대리가 생면부지의 자신을 왜 찾아왔는지 의아해하였다.
“그런데 어쩐 일이시죠? 2주 동안 제게 볼일 있어 찾아온 사람은 아마 이대리님이 처음일 겁니다. 하하….”
“별일은 아니고요, 퇴근 하시는 것 같은데 갑자기 죄송하지만, 그냥 만나서 얘기 좀 하고 싶어서 그런데…, 혹시 약속 없으시면 우리 자재/개발팀 직원들과 함께 저녁 같이 하시면 어떨까 해서요?”
“네?”
신대리는 아닌 밤중에 홍두깨처럼 자재팀 직원들이 같이 식사를 하자는 말에 잠시 말문을 잃었다가, 순간 뭔가 이것이 자신에게 어떤 전환점이 될 수 있다는 생각에 가슴이 뛰기 시작했다. 그는 문득 순수견양(順手牽羊)이란 말이 생각났다. 손을 뻗어 남의 양을 끌고 간다는 이 말은, 지금 현재 아무 것도 없는 그가 찬 밥 더운 밥 가릴 것 없이 손에 잡히는 데로 어떤 도움이라도 취해야 한다는 것을 가르쳐 주고 있었다.
“아, 네, 좋습니다. 당연히 가야죠. 그렇잖아도 매일 말동무도 없이 매우 무료한 생활이었는데, 제겐 진짜 반가운 일이지요.”
“잘됐네요. 그럼 정리하시고, 10분 후에 건물 뒤 감자탕집 아시죠? 그곳에서 만나죠.”
이대리는 짧은 말을 남기고 자재팀으로 돌아갔다. 신대리는 얼떨떨하고 급한 마음에 책상에 있던 자료들을 얼른 서랍 속에 쓸어 넣고는 바로 자리를 나섰다. ( 계속 )

Assistant Shin greeted Team Leader Lee with a slightly awkward feeling and an uneasy heart. Having never imagined he would work under Team Leader Lee again after a year, Assistant Shin couldn’t help but recall how, in the past, his actions had caused Director Kim to resign and nearly led to Team Leader Lee’s departure from the company. He regretted being unable to sever the persistent ties of ill-fated connections. Surprisingly, Team Leader Lee welcomed him with a hearty laugh, saying they should forget the past and start anew together. However, Assistant Shin could easily sense the duplicity hidden behind Lee’s bright reception.
Facing Team Leader Lee, Assistant Shin couldn’t help but think of the phrase from the 36 Stratagems, “Hide a knife behind a smile” (소리장도). It seemed as if Lee was harboring a dagger in his heart while outwardly treating Assistant Shin with kindness. Assistant Shin thought it might have been easier to face Lee if the latter had been honest about his feelings, openly expressing that they had to work together for the company’s sake despite the difficulty, and admitting that he still disliked Assistant Shin for the trouble he had caused. Instead, the encounter left Assistant Shin uneasy.
Now firmly established in his role as a BM (Brand Manager), Assistant Shin felt a sense of fulfillment, believing he was finally on equal footing with his peers. However, he soon realized that the sense of alienation he experienced a year ago as a market research officer in the marketing department had not changed much now that he had returned as a BM. Some BMs still harbored grievances over the incident Assistant Shin had caused in the past. Furthermore, the strictly individualistic BM system within the marketing department, designed to prevent interference between different brand managers, had naturally fostered extreme individualism among its members. As a result, after initial formal greetings, most people, both professionally and personally, treated Assistant Shin with indifference—a response that seemed only natural.
Even though the M&C licensing agreement had been signed, the urgent task of deciding whether to position M&C as a brand shop and developing distribution-appropriate products still loomed. Yet, with no prior experience, Assistant Shin found himself unable to accomplish anything even after two weeks. Team Leader Lee gave him no specific instructions, and when Assistant Shin sought advice from his fellow BMs, they offered little help, citing their busy schedules.
After two wasted weeks, on a Friday evening, Assistant Shin, as usual, passed the time by reading documents and proposals prepared by others. He barely managed to get through the day, tidied his desk, and prepared to leave. Overwhelmed by the daunting task of unraveling the tangled mess of his work, Assistant Shin stood up, letting out a heavy sigh—a habit he had developed over time.
At that moment, Assistant Manager Lee from the Materials Purchasing Team approached him. Assistant Manager Lee, slightly shorter than Assistant Shin but of average height, had neatly cropped, slightly curly hair, and a clean, tidy appearance, with fair skin that seemed almost feminine. Assistant Shin had never met him before, as Assistant Manager Lee had been transferred from the Overseas Team to the Materials Purchasing Team while Assistant Shin was assigned to the marketing department.
“Excuse me… Are you Assistant Shin?”
“Yes, and you are?”
“Oh, I’m Assistant Manager Lee from the Materials Team. I just wanted to introduce myself since I recently joined the Materials Team.”
“Ah, my apologies. I should’ve introduced myself first. I’m still new here, so I’ve been struggling to figure out who’s who and what’s what.”
Feeling both apologetic and embarrassed, Assistant Shin extended his hand for a handshake, but he couldn’t help but wonder why someone he didn’t know had come to see him.
“So, what brings you here? I think you’re the first person to come to me with anything in the past two weeks. Haha…”
“It’s nothing much. I noticed you were about to leave, but if you don’t have other plans, would you be interested in joining our Materials/Development Team for dinner? We’d love to have you.”
“Pardon?”
Assistant Shin was momentarily speechless at the sudden invitation to join the Materials Team for dinner, but he quickly realized that this might be a turning point for him. His heart began to race as the thought struck him. He suddenly remembered the phrase 順手牽羊 (“Take a lamb in passing”), which teaches that one should seize any opportunity at hand, regardless of its nature, especially when one has nothing else.
“Oh, yes, of course! I’d be delighted to join. I’ve been living a dull and lonely life without anyone to talk to, so this is truly a welcome invitation.”
“Great! Finish up here, and let’s meet at the potato stew restaurant behind the building in about ten minutes. You know the place, right?”
Leaving those brief words, Assistant Manager Lee returned to the Materials Team. Flustered but eager, Assistant Shin hastily swept the documents on his desk into a drawer and quickly headed out. (To be continued)
