TFT는 소강 상태였다. 이제는 모두 각 자의 부서에서 디자인하고 R&D에 집중할 때였다. 다소 여유를 찾은 듯 보였지만 신팀장에겐 떠나지 않는 화두가 두 가지 있었다. 하나는 이 많은 제품들을 허진희와 단 둘이서 진행해 나갈 수가 없어 마케터의 보강이 더 필요하다는 것이었고, 다른 하나는 브랜드숍 매장을 어떻게 구성하고 어느 곳에 매장을 오픈해야할지 등의 업무를 해야 하는데, 이에 대해서는 제품 디자인만 해왔던 회사의 디자인실에서도 도움을 기대하기 힘들어 전문적으로 숍 비지니스를 했던 경력자의 지원이 필요하다는 것이었다.
마케터 보강은 민이사에게 진작부터 요청한 바 있었지만 아무리 눈을 씻고 봐도 도대체 내부조직에서는 마땅한 사람을 찾을 수가 없었고, 점포개발 경력자 채용에 대해서는 아직 시기가 이르다는 이유로 증원이 보류되어 신팀장은 그저 답답하기가 그지 없었다.
그렇게 1월이 지나고 2월의 추위가 마지막 겨울을 아쉽다는 듯이 기승을 부리던 날 아침, 신팀장은 여느 때와 다름없이 남들보다 이른 아침을 시작하였다. 평소와는 달리 신팀장의 자리에는 따뜻한 커피가 추위에 얼은 그를 반기며 향긋하고 구수한 내음을 풍기고 있었다.
“어? 이게 웬 커피지?”
신팀장은 어리둥절하며 주위를 돌아봤지만 아무도 없었다. 그는 의자에 털썩 몸을 던지듯이 앉고는 따뜻한 커피 한 모금을 마시며 마치 와인을 음미하듯이 눈을 지그시 감았다. 그때였다. 낭랑한 여자의 음성이 그의 고요한 하루의 시작을 깨웠다.
“팀장님! 안녕하세요?”
“어? 이게 누구야? 윤희씨~! 잘 있었어?”
신팀장은 그 동안 까맣게 잊고 있었던 조윤희의 출현에 다소 놀라기도 했지만, 이내 바쁘다는 핑계로 소원했음에 대한 미안함이 먼저 다가왔다.
“그러게… 그 동안 너무 하신 거 아니어요? 전 이제나 저제나 팀장님 소식만 기다리고 있었는데…”
조윤희는 눈을 흘기며 말했다.
“커피는 맛있으신가요?”
“아~! 커피! 너무 좋은데? 가뜩이나 오늘 따라 왜 이리 추운지…. 윤희씨의 커피 한잔에 몸도 녹고 마음도 녹아버렸어~. 하하하~!”
신팀장은 화통하게 웃으며 그 동안의 서운함이 날아가 버리길 바랬다.
“그나저나 이렇게 이른 아침부터 웬 일이야?”
조윤희는 이내 밝게 웃으며 말했다.
“그냥…뭐~! 마지막으로 팀장님 얼굴 보고 싶어서 왔어요. 업무시간엔 너무 바쁘시잖아요. 회의도 많고 외근도 많으시고…. 사실 몇 번 찾아왔었는데….”
조윤희는 말끝을 흐렸다.
“엥~? 마지막이라니 뭔 소리야?”
신팀장은 아닌 밤중에 홍두깨 마냥 놀라 어리둥절해 하다가 이내 정신을 차리고 조윤희를 회의실로 데려 갔다. 회의 실에 들어오자 조윤희가 먼저 말을 꺼냈다.
“잘 아시잖아요. 사업개발부에 있을 때부터 송팀장님 때문에 저 힘들어 했던 거요. 이젠 도저히 안되겠어요. 그냥 회사를 떠나기로 마음 먹었어요. 그래서 미리 인사도 할 겸 찾아왔었던 것인데, 진짜 이른 아침 시간 아니면 얼굴보기 힘드시네요.”
이미 조윤희는 마음의 정리를 다한 사람처럼 보였다.
“윤희씨! 뭔 소리야? 그만 두면 안되지. 우리가 얼마나 힘들게 M&C 브랜드를 들여왔는데, 윤희씨가 결실도 맺기 전에 떠나면 안되지.”
신팀장은 순간 ‘앗차’하는 생각이 들었다. 왜 여지 것 조윤희를 잊고 있었을까? 기초 담당자를 계속 마케팅 부서 내부에서만 고민했었는데, 조윤희를 전혀 생각조차도 못했던 것이다. 작년 조윤희와 깊은 포옹을 했을 때 떨리던 감정의 끝자락이 다시 새롭게 일어나는 것만 같았다. 어쩌면 신팀장도 자기도 모르게 쏠리는 개인적인 감정 때문에 조윤희를 무의식적으로 잊으려 했는지도 모를 일이었다.
“내가 언젠가 윤희씨랑 성준이는 나랑 다시 꼭 일할 거라고 말했잖아. 그렇잖아도 마케터가 더 필요해서 조윤희를 추천하려고 하던 참이었는데, 그 새를 못 참고 그만 두려고 한단 말이야?”
“네? 정말이에요?”
순간 조윤희의 얼굴이 환해졌다가 이내 다시 어두워졌다.
“하지만, 송팀장님이 놔줄까요? 내가 비서겸 번역겸 다 해주고 있는데….”
“걱정 마, 윤희씨. 내가 민이사님께 잘 말해볼게. 지금 우리회사에서 M&C가 가장 우선순위의 프로젝트야. 더욱이 윤희씨 같은 인재를 떠나 보내면 회사로써는 더 큰 손실이지, 그렇고 말고. 걱정하지마. 송팀장님은 민이사님이 해결할 수 있도록 해볼게.”
신팀장은 잠시 생각을 했다가 다시 말을 이었다.
“36계에 혼수모어(混水模漁)라는 말이 있어. 물을 혼탁하게 만들어서 물고기를 잡는다는 말인데….”
“풋~~”
순간 조윤희는 손으로 입을 가리며 재미있다는 듯이 밝게 웃었다.
“어? 왜 웃어?”
“아뇨. 오랜만에 듣는 사자성어라 반가워서 그래요. 아뭏튼 여전하시네요, 저도 병법서들을 꼭 읽어봐야겠어요.”
“아~, 그런가? 하하하~!”
신팀장도 한바탕 밝게 웃었다. 조윤희와 함께 있으니, 이른 아침부터 그 동안의 스트레스가 모두 풀리는 기분이었다.
“어쨌든, 혼수모어(混水模漁)는 적의 내부를 혼란시켜 정신을 못 차리게 한 다음, 아군이 원하는 방향으로 전세를 이끌게 하는 전략이야. 그러니 일단 윤희씨는 사무실로 돌아가서, 송팀장에게 그만 두고 싶다는 의사 표현을 과감하게 해. 송팀장은 윤희씨가 없으면 갑갑할테니 분명 잡으려고 하겠지. 그때 송팀장의 개인적 업무에 대해 하기 싫다고 솔직히 다 말하는 거야. 이런 식으론 일 못하겠다고…. 아마도 송팀장은 크게 당황해서 윤희씨가 그 때문에 떠나겠다는 것을 막지 못 할거야. 그때 민이사님을 통해서 윤희씨를 우리 팀으로 데려오고 싶다는 말이 전달되도록 하는 거지. 그러면 윤희씨가 회사를 떠나지 않고 비밀을 지킬테니 다른 부서에서 근무하게 해달라고 요청을 하는 거야. 알겠지? 나만 믿고 있어.”
조윤희는 신팀장의 말에 기쁨을 감추지 못하며 연신 고개를 끄덕였다.
“네. 그럼 돌아가서 팀장님 말대로 할게요. 고맙습니다.”
돌아가는 조윤희를 바라보며, 신팀장도 큰 고민 하나를 해결한 것 같아 매우 기뻤다. 그는 민이사가 출근하기만 기다렸다가, 엘리베이터 입구에서 나오는 민이사를 보고 그대로 방까지 따라 들어갔다. ( 계속 )

TFT was in a lull. It was now time for everyone to focus on their respective departments, design, and R&D. While it seemed like things had settled down a bit, Team Leader Shin had two lingering concerns. One was that there were too many products for just him and Jinhee Heo to manage, and additional marketers were desperately needed. The other was the need to plan and execute how to set up brand shop locations and decide where to open new stores. However, the company’s design team, which had only ever worked on product design, was unlikely to provide any help, making it necessary to recruit someone with professional experience in the shop business.
Although Team Leader Shin had already requested additional marketers from Director Min, no suitable candidate could be found within the internal organization no matter how hard they looked. As for recruiting someone experienced in store development, the request was put on hold for being “premature,” leaving Shin frustrated and helpless.
As January passed and February’s bitter cold seemed to put up its last fierce fight of the winter, Team Leader Shin began his morning earlier than usual, as always. Unlike other days, his desk greeted him with a warm cup of coffee, the fragrant aroma cutting through the freezing air.
“Huh? What’s this coffee doing here?”
Bewildered, Shin looked around, but there was no one in sight. He sat heavily into his chair, took a sip of the warm coffee, and closed his eyes as if savoring a fine wine. Just then, a cheerful female voice broke the silence of his peaceful morning.
“Good morning, Team Leader!”
“Huh? Who is this? Oh, Yoonhee! How have you been?”
Shin was slightly surprised by the unexpected appearance of Yoonhee Cho, someone he had almost forgotten about, but he soon felt a pang of guilt for neglecting her under the excuse of being busy.
“Really… How could you? I’ve been waiting for news from you this whole time…”
Yoonhee said with a hint of reproach in her eyes.
“Is the coffee to your liking?”
“Oh! The coffee is wonderful! On a day as cold as this, your cup of coffee is warming both my body and heart. Haha!”
Shin laughed heartily, hoping to dispel the awkwardness and bridge the distance between them.
“But what brings you here so early in the morning?”
Yoonhee smiled brightly and responded, “I just…wanted to see you one last time. You’re always so busy during work hours, with all your meetings and outside appointments. Honestly, I’ve tried coming by a few times before…” Her voice trailed off.
“Wait, what? One last time? What do you mean by that?”
Shin, startled as if hit out of nowhere, quickly collected himself and led Yoonhee to the meeting room. Once inside, Yoonhee spoke up first.
“You know very well how much I’ve struggled because of Team Leader Song ever since I was in the Business Development Department. I can’t take it anymore. I’ve decided to leave the company. I wanted to say goodbye in advance, but it’s really hard to catch you unless it’s this early in the morning.”
Yoonhee seemed like someone who had already made up her mind.
“Yoonhee, what are you talking about? You can’t quit. Think about how hard we worked to bring in the M&C brand. You can’t leave before we see it succeed.”
In that moment, Shin thought, “Ah, how could I have forgotten?” He realized he had been too focused on finding someone for the basic product line within the marketing department and hadn’t even considered Yoonhee. The fluttering feelings he had experienced when they shared that heartfelt hug last year seemed to rekindle. Perhaps, deep down, Shin had unconsciously tried to suppress his personal feelings by keeping Yoonhee out of his mind.
“I told you before, didn’t I? That one day, you, Sungjun, and I would work together again. As it happens, we need more marketers right now, and I was just about to recommend you. But here you are, ready to quit before I even had the chance.”
“Really? Is that true?” Yoonhee’s face lit up for a moment but quickly turned somber again.
“But…will Team Leader Song let me go? I handle everything for him—secretarial work, translations, everything.”
“Don’t worry about it, Yoonhee. I’ll talk to Director Min. Right now, M&C is our company’s top-priority project. Letting someone like you leave would be a huge loss for the company. Don’t worry about Team Leader Song; I’ll make sure Director Min handles it.”
Shin paused briefly to gather his thoughts and then continued.
“There’s an old strategy in The Thirty-Six Stratagems called 혼수모어 (混水模漁)—‘confuse the waters to catch the fish.’”
“Pfft!”
Yoonhee burst out laughing, covering her mouth with her hand as if amused.
“Huh? Why are you laughing?”
“No, it’s just… It’s been so long since I’ve heard a classical Chinese idiom. It’s refreshing. You’re as insightful as ever. I think I should start reading military strategy books too.”
“Ah, is that so? Haha!”
Shin laughed brightly. Being with Yoonhee made him feel as if all his accumulated stress melted away in that early morning moment.
“In any case, 혼수모어 (混水模漁) means to create confusion within the enemy so they can’t think clearly, allowing us to guide the situation in our favor. So, here’s the plan: go back to your office and boldly tell Team Leader Song that you’re resigning. He’ll panic because he can’t function without you and will try to hold you back. That’s when you firmly express your dissatisfaction with doing his personal errands. Tell him you can’t work like this anymore. He’ll be so flustered that he won’t be able to stop you. Then, I’ll have Director Min propose transferring you to my team as a way to keep you from leaving the company. That way, you can stay without breaking ties, and you’ll officially work in a different department. Got it? Just trust me.”
Yoonhee could hardly hide her delight as she nodded enthusiastically.
“Yes, I’ll go back and do exactly as you said. Thank you so much.”
As Yoonhee walked away, Shin felt a great sense of relief, as if a significant problem had been resolved. He eagerly awaited Director Min’s arrival, and as soon as he saw Min step out of the elevator, Shin followed him straight into his office. (To be continued)
