봄이 왔어도 여전히 추위가 기승을 부리며, 새봄을 시샘하는 듯 꽃샘추위가 가실 줄 모르는 3월 초의 어느 날 한 명의 아리따운 여직원이 인사를 하러 왔다.
“안녕하세요? 이번에 미용연구실에 새로 입사한 정대리 입니다. 앞으로 많은 도움 및 부탁 드립니다. 열심히 하겠습니다.”
그녀의 인사는 틀에 박힌 말이었지만 매우 활기차고 자신감이 넘쳐 보였다.
정대리는 이미 결혼한 30대초반의 유부녀였지만, 미용연구실 직원답게 짙은 화장과 세련된 복장으로 작은 키와 통통한 몸매를 티가 안나게 커버하였으며, 눈이 크고 또렷한 이목구비를 짧은 단발 헤어 스타일로 더욱 부각시킨 것이 뭔가 메이크업 쪽으로 프로페셔널한 느낌이 확 들어왔다. 그녀는 이미 타사에서 많은 품평 및 상품 기획 경험을 가지고 있으며 특히 색조제품에서 중요한 칼라 및 트렌드에 밝아 그 동안 기초화장품 중심인 미용연구실의 부족한 점을 보완하기 위해 특별히 M&C를 위해 영입한 인재였다.
화장품 개발에서 R&D만큼 중요한 업무 중 하나는 미용연구이다. 미용연구는 말 그대로 미용을 R&D하는 곳이다. R&D가 기술적인 측면에 치우쳐서 화장품의 최신 기술 및 원료를 찾고 개발하는(Research & Development) 곳이라면, 미용연구는 R&D에 부응하여 신제품 개발에 도움이 되는 미용 전반적인 정보, 즉 패션, 칼라, 소비자들이 선호하는 화장품 트렌드들을 찾아 R&D와 커뮤니케이션을 하고, 신제품 개발 시에는 신제품 내용물의 품평을 주도하여 R&D가 제시하는 다양한 샘플의 사용감과 효과 등을 소비자가 발견할 수 없는 부분까지 전문적으로 평가하는 한편, 신제품 출시에 맞춰서는 신제품을 활용한 미용법을 개발하여 화장품의 활용성을 더욱 높이는 중요한 업무를 수행한다.
미용연구의 업무 중 색조화장품의 경우는 그 사용감뿐만 아니라 특히 칼라가 매우 중요하다. 여성들의 패션은 의상에서 시작해서 의상에 맞는 메이크업이 따라가고 그 다음이 악세사리라고 한다. 따라서 미용연구의 색조 담당자는 세계 패션 트렌드와 유행색 협회에서 발표하는 향후 칼라 트렌드를 함께 접목하여 미리 봄부터 가을의 유행 칼라를 예측, 선정해서, R&D로 하여금 그 칼라에 맞는 제품을 개발하도록 하고 R&D가 제시한 칼라가 실제로 피부에 발랐을 때 제대로 표현되는지를 품평하여 수정 보완하도록 하는 중요한 일을 수행하는 것이다.
신팀장의 입장에서 정대리는 그 동안 미용연구실에 대해 가졌던 아쉬움을 풀어줄 수 있는 천군만마와도 같은 매우 중요한 사람이었고, 이후 정대리도 몸은 비록 미용연구실 소속이었지만 마음은 마치 M&C팀에 속한 것처럼 신팀장과 좋은 관계를 유지하며 수년간 지속적으로 M&C에 대해 매우 큰 역할을 하게 된다.
신팀장은 정대리가 각 팀에 인사를 하고 돌아가자 허진희에게 말했다.
“진희씨, 얼른 정대리에게 가서 날부터 잡아라.”
“네? 무슨 날이요?”
“아이 참, 술 한잔 먹어서 얼른 우리 편으로 만들어야지! 첫 날이지만 오늘이라도 당장 저녁식사 같이 하자고 해봐~!”
허진희는 이내 웃으며 알았다는 대답과 함께 미용연구실로 갔다가 30분 정도 후에 되어서야 돌아왔다.
“팀장님, 이미 팀 회식이 있어 다음에 하자는데요?”
“아니 그 얘기 들으려고 그리 오래 걸렸니?”
“수다 좀 떨었어요. 성격 좋으시던데요? 그리고 그렇게 안보이던데 유부녀에요.”
허진희는 그러면서 정대리에 대해 간단한 신상명세와 경력을 얘기해 주었다.
“흠…알았어. 오늘 어디서 한데?”
“회사 뒤 초원가든에서 한데요.”
“좋아, 그럼 오늘 우리도 회식이다. 그리고 나중에 자연스럽게 합치자. 내가 오늘 초원가든에서 한우등심 쏜다~?”
단촐한 M&C팀 멤버들은 삼겹살이 아닌 한우라는 말에 모두들 즐거운 마음으로 환호성을 질렀다.
어제 밤 정대리 환영회를 빙자해서 오랜만에 신팀장은 마음껏 취했다. 그 동안 두 명의 팀원들도 연일 되는 야근에 지칠 대로 지쳐 있었던 마당인지라 이 참에 속 좀 풀겠다고 소맥 폭탄을 들이댔으며, 미용연구팀의 여성부대와 합류하여 유일한 남자 청일점이었던 신팀장은 계속 받은 건배 제의에 나중에는 2차로 간 노래방에서 있었던 일은 기억조차 나지가 않았다. 아침에 일어나 보니 온 몸이 쑤시고 목이 아픈 게, 혹시 무슨 큰 실수라도 없었을까 걱정이 되어 신팀장은 팀원들에게 조심스레 물어보았다.
“어제 혹 뭔 일 없었니? 난 도대체 기억이 나지 않는다. 목은 왜 이리 아픈지….”
“팀장님, 저도 잘 기억이 가물가물해요.”
조윤희의 대답에 원래 술을 잘 못 마시는 허진희가 이어 말했다.
“별일 없었어요. 정대리님이 워낙 노래도 잘하시고 춤도 잘 추셔서 두 분이 진하게 커플 댄스도 하고 러브샷도 하고…, 음… 맞다~! 팀장님은 무슨 락앤롤을 부르신다며 고래고래 소리도 지르시고….”
허진희의 장난끼 섞인 말에 신팀장은 큰 일 났구나 싶어 고개를 들 수가 없었다.
“새로 들어온 사람하고 첫 날부터 너무 심하게 달린 것 같네. 내 첫인상 이미지가 너무 안 좋은 것 아닐까 걱정되네.”
“걱정 마세요, 팀장님! 정대리님도 피차일반이었으니까요. 맞다~, 하하하~, 정대리님이 테이블에 올라가니까 윤희 언니도… 하하하~. 막 테이블에 올라 춤 추고…”
허진희는 말을 하다가 문득 어제 일들이 생생하게 떠오른다는 듯이 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 그렇게 듣고 보니 신팀장도 문득문득 어제 밤의 일이 끊겨진 영상처럼 떠오르는 것 같았다. 자기도 함께 테이블에 올랐다가 넘어졌던 일이 떠오르자, 그래서 이리 몸이 쑤시고 아프구나 하는 생각이 들었다.
“암튼 병법 36계에도 미인계가 있는데, 이번에는 드디어 나의 미남계가 통했나 보군, 하하하~”
갑작스런 신팀장의 미남계란 말에 두 사람은 뭐라 차마 말도 하지 못하고, 떫더름한 표정으로 서로를 바라보며 작은 웃음으로 답하였다. 아무튼 허심탄회한 광란의 첫 만남이었던 것 같아 원래 목적은 달성하지 않았나 싶어, 신팀장도 함께 큰 미소를 머금으며 쑥스러움을 모면하려고 하였다. – 계 속 –

Spring had arrived, yet the cold still lingered stubbornly, as if envious of the new season. On one such early March day, when the chill refused to let go, a beautiful new female employee came to introduce herself.
“Hello? My name is Assistant Manager Jeong, and I have just joined the Beauty Research Lab. I look forward to your guidance and support. I will do my best.”
Her introduction was a standard, formulaic greeting, but she delivered it with great energy and confidence.
Although in her early thirties and already married, Assistant Manager Jeong, as befitted someone from the Beauty Research Lab, wore sophisticated attire and skillfully applied makeup that concealed her short stature and slightly plump figure. Her large, well-defined eyes and distinct facial features were accentuated by a short bob hairstyle, giving off a distinctly professional makeup expert vibe. She had extensive experience in product evaluation and planning from her previous company, with a strong expertise in color and trends—essential factors in color cosmetics. She had been specially recruited for M&C to complement the Beauty Research Lab, which had been predominantly focused on skincare products.
In cosmetics development, beauty research is just as important as R&D. Beauty research, as the name suggests, involves researching beauty itself. While R&D focuses on the technical aspects—developing new cosmetic technologies and ingredients—beauty research gathers comprehensive beauty-related information, such as fashion, color trends, and consumer preferences, to communicate with R&D. It plays a crucial role in new product development by leading the sensory evaluation of prototypes, ensuring that the formulations proposed by R&D are assessed for texture, effectiveness, and nuances that consumers might not easily notice. Furthermore, before a product launch, beauty research develops makeup application techniques to enhance product usability.
For color cosmetics, beauty research is particularly vital, as color is just as important as texture. Women’s fashion typically starts with clothing, followed by complementary makeup, and then accessories. Therefore, beauty researchers must analyze global fashion trends and the colors predicted by trend organizations to forecast and select upcoming seasonal colors from spring to autumn. They then ensure that R&D develops products in alignment with these colors and evaluate whether the shades apply correctly on the skin, making adjustments as necessary.
From Team Manager Shin’s perspective, Assistant Manager Jeong was a much-needed asset, someone who could address the longstanding gaps in the Beauty Research Lab. Although officially part of the lab, she would go on to play a significant role for M&C, working closely with Team Manager Shin as if she were a member of his team.
After Assistant Manager Jeong finished greeting the teams and left, Shin turned to Heo Jin-hee and said,
“Jin-hee, go talk to her right away and set a date.”
“A date? What kind of date?”
“Come on, we need to take her out for drinks and bring her to our side! Even if it’s her first day, ask her to join us for dinner tonight.”
Jin-hee chuckled and agreed before heading to the Beauty Research Lab. She didn’t return for another thirty minutes.
“Team Manager, she already has a team dinner planned, so she suggested another time.”
“Did it really take you that long to hear that?”
“We chatted a bit. She’s got a great personality. And she doesn’t look it, but she’s married.”
Jin-hee then shared some brief details about Jeong’s background and career.
“Hmm… I see. Where’s their dinner?”
“They’re going to Choweon Garden behind the company.”
“Alright, then we’re having a team dinner too. And later, we’ll naturally merge with them. I’ll treat everyone to premium Korean beef today!”
The small M&C team cheered enthusiastically at the mention of high-quality beef rather than the usual pork belly.
That night, under the pretense of welcoming Assistant Manager Jeong, Team Manager Shin drank to his heart’s content. His two team members, exhausted from frequent overtime, also took this chance to let loose, knocking back mixed drinks of beer and soju. Later, they merged with the Beauty Research Lab’s group, where Shin, as the only man among the female colleagues, found himself continuously toasting and drinking. By the time they moved to a karaoke bar for the second round, he had no recollection of what transpired.
The next morning, Shin woke up with body aches and a sore throat, worried that he might have done something embarrassing. Cautiously, he asked his team members,
“Did anything happen last night? I don’t remember a thing. And why is my throat so sore…?”
“Team Manager, I don’t really remember much either,” said Jo Yoon-hee vaguely.
Heo Jin-hee, who wasn’t a strong drinker, then chimed in,
“Nothing too serious. But Assistant Manager Jeong is a fantastic singer and dancer, so the two of you had a rather… intense couple dance. Oh, and you did a love shot together… And… oh right! You yelled at the top of your lungs, saying you were going to sing rock and roll…”
At Jin-hee’s playful remarks, Shin felt a sense of impending doom and couldn’t bring himself to lift his head.
“Maybe we got a bit too carried away on her first day. I’m worried I might have made a terrible first impression…”
“Don’t worry, Team Manager! Assistant Manager Jeong was just as bad. Oh, right! Hahaha! When she climbed onto the table, Yoon-hee followed suit and started dancing too—hahaha!”
As Jin-hee burst into laughter, memories of last night flashed back to Shin like a fragmented video. Suddenly, he recalled himself climbing onto the table before tumbling off, realizing that must be why his body was so sore.
“Well, even in the Art of War, there’s the ‘beauty trap’ strategy. I guess my ‘handsome trap’ finally worked this time. Hahaha!”
At his unexpected joke, the two women exchanged silent glances, suppressing awkward smiles. But ultimately, they couldn’t deny that the wild, uninhibited first meeting had achieved its goal. Trying to shake off his embarrassment, Shin also smiled broadly. (To be continued)
