“사장님, 어떻게 되었습니까?”
“하~ 고놈 참… 이상무 말이야~”
“네. 사장님.”
“이번에 그 놈은 사표를 안썼더구먼~. 여기에 그 놈 건 없어.”
“네? 그럼 이건 다 직원들 건가요?”
“그러게. 자기는 사표를 같이 낸 게 아니라 직원들 것을 전달만 해준 거고, 같이 따라 나간 것도 직원들을 설득하기 위해 나간 것이라고 하네.”
“그럼 이상무는 그만 두겠다는 것이 아니군요.”
나는 억장이 무너지는 듯한 실망스러움에 절로 한숨을 내쉬었다.
“휴~ 그래도 이런 일은 직원들 관리를 제대로 못한 이상무 책임 아닙니까?”
“당연하지. 임원이 이런 거 하나 막지 못하고 내게 그대로 전달한 것부터 큰 잘못이지. 어쨌든 이번에도 또 눈물지으며 빌길래 이번에도 용서는 해주었지만, 이 사표들은 내가 돌려주지 않았다. 계속 가지고 있을 거라고 했어.”
“사장님… 그럼 제 생각인데 말이죠…”
나는 잠시 생각을 정리한 다음에 말을 이었다.
“순망치한(脣亡齒寒)이란 말이 있습니다. 입술이 없으면 이가 시리다는 말이죠.”
“갑자기 순망치한이 뭔 말인가?”
“중국 춘추시대 말엽, 진(晉)나라 헌공은 괵나라를 공격할 야심을 품고 있었는데, 그러려면 우나라를 통과해야 해서, 우나라 왕에게 그곳을 지나갈 수 있도록 허락해줄 것을 요청했습니다. 그러자 우나라의 현인 궁지기(宮之寄)는 헌공의 속셈을 알고 우왕에게 간언하기를…
“괵나라와 우나라는 한몸이나 다름없는 사이오라 괵나라가 망하면 우나라도 망할 것이옵니다. 옛 속담에도 수레의 짐받이 판자와 수레는 서로 의지하고(輔車相依), 입술이 없어지면 이가 시리다(脣亡齒寒)고 했습니다. 이는 바로 괵나라와 우나라의 관계를 말한 것입니다. 결코 길을 빌려주어서는 안될 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다.
그러나 뇌물에 눈이 어두워진 우왕은 말을 듣지 않았답니다. 그리고 진나라는 궁지기의 예견대로 12월에 괵나라를 정벌하고 돌아오는 길에 우나라도 정복하고 말았지요.”
“그래서…. 그게 어떻단 말이지?”
성격이 급한 민대표는 나의 말이 끝나자마자 내가 말하려는 의도가 무엇이냐며 서둘러 물었다.
“그러니까 이상무의 위아래 입술들을 떼어내어 꼼짝도 못하게 하자는 것이죠. 우두머리를 바로 잡기 힘들면 그의 수족부터 자르는 것입니다. 제가 보니 실제로 이상무의 모든 업무는 두 명의 서씨 자매들이 다 해주고 있습니다. 서이사, 서부장을 자르면 이상무는 이곳에서 아무 일도 하지 못합니다.
송부장 얘기 들으니, 대부분의 직원들은 서부장 눈치 보느라 하기 싫은데도 어쩔 수 없이 동참한 것 같더군요. 그들에겐 선처가 필요할 것 같습니다. 이상무는 사장님이 알아서 하시더라도 직원들은 제게 맡겨 주시기 바랍니다.”
“흠~~ 그거 일리있는 말이군. 그럼 어디 그리 해보게나~ 나도 나대로 준비해볼테니…”
민대표 역시 신중하게 잠시 생각을 정리하더니만, 직원들에 대해선 내게 일임하였다.
“네. 알겠습니다. 그럼 이만 나가보겠습니다.”
이제 칼자루는 내가 쥐게 된 것이다. 나는 어떤 구실로 서이사와 서부장을 내보낼지 곰곰히 생각해봤지만, 지금 당장 보다는 일단 이 사태를 조용히 무마시키는 것이 좋겠다고 생각하였다. 격앙된 직원들을 달래는 것이 우선이라 생각했기 때문이었다.
한편 이상무는 뭐가 그리 바쁜지 오늘따라 방에 틀어박혀 나올 생각도 하지 않았다. 나는 퇴근하며 그의 방을 슬쩍 들여다봤지만, 그는 웬일인지 자리에 앉아 PC로 무슨 서류작업을 하는데 여념이 없었다. 나는 못내 궁금하여 슬쩍 그의 방을 노크하며 퇴근 인사를 하였다.
“퇴근 안하세요? 전 이만 퇴근합니다~~”
“아~ 네~ 전 좀 할 일이 남았네요. 먼저 들어가세요.”
“갑자기 뭔 일이 있나요? 야근도 하시고…”
“아뇨~ 그냥 오늘 오후에 제대로 일을 하지 못했더니만… 먼저 들어가세요~”
“네. 그럼 전 몸도 좀 안 좋고 해서 오늘은 이만 일찍 들어갑니다. 수고하세요~.”
나는 그가 뭔 일을 하는지 궁금하였지만, 개의치 않았다. 이미 대세는 기울어졌고, 민대표의 마음 속에 이상무는 더 이상 없기 때문이었다. 아침부터 힘든 몸이었지만, 유난히 마음은 가벼운 퇴근 길이었다. (계속)

“Of course. An executive who can’t prevent this and hands the entire pile to me is already at fault. He cried again and begged for forgiveness, so I let it go this time as well, but I didn’t return these letters. I told him I’m keeping them.”

I paused, organized my thoughts, and continued.

CEO Min, impatient as always, demanded that I get to the point before I even finished.
