미셸 리는 확실히 프랑스인들의 사고방식과 그들의 비지니스 방법을 잘 이해하고 있었으며, 수 년간 여러 프로젝트를 진행하며 쌓아온 경험으로 M&C 프로젝트가 한국에서 큰 성공을 하리라는 동물적 감각도 가지고 있었다. 그러나 그 무엇보다도 그녀는 사업개발팀원들의 열정을 믿고 있었다. 그래서인지 그녀는 다른 어떤 일들 보다 우선적이고 적극적으로 M&C에 매달렸으며, 그녀의 노력과 협상력의 결과로 M&C본사도 어느새 그녀의 열정을 믿기 시작하게 되었다.
물론 그 과정에 사업개발팀원들은 수 십 번도 넘게 프로포절을 만들고 고치기를 반복하는 힘들고 지루한 시간을 보냈고, 신대리는 그 어떤 일들보다 기다리는 일이 가장 힘든 일임을 새삼 느꼈다. 그 와중에도 사업개발팀원들은 M&C 이외에 송팀장이 던져준 남성용 및 헤어 브랜드로 또 다른 해외 라이센싱 사업을 진행하는 등 여전히 바쁜 일정을 소화해 내야만 했다.
그리고 그 결과 그 해 가을이 되어서야 비로소 M&C의 라이센스 계약이 회사의 요구를 전폭적으로 수용하는 것으로 이루어지게 되었다. 즉, 계약기간은 5년이고, 러닝 로열티는 매출실적 등급별로 3~5%를 지급하며, 미니멈 로열티도 첫 해에는 5천만원에서 시작하여 2억원까지 매년 점차 증가하게 되었지만 예상 매출 대비 크게 부담 없는 금액이었다. 더욱이 한국에서 M&C 브랜드에 대한 인지도를 더 올리기 위해 광고판촉비를 프랑스 본사에서 일정 부분 지원해준다는 개념으로 로열티를 전체 매출실적이 아닌 실적의 90%에 산정하기로 하여 로열티의 10%를 절감하는 성과도 이루었다.
청명한 가을 하늘을 시샘하는 것인지, 여름을 아직은 보낼 수 없다는 막바지 몸부림처럼 때아닌 늦더위가 기승을 부리고 있는 9월의 마지막 주, 프랑스 M&C 본사의 라이센스 디렉터의 방문은 사업개발팀원들을 아침부터 분주하게 하고 있었다. 신대리는 오늘 있을 일을 꼼꼼히 검토하며 팀원들이 해야 할 업무를 분장하고 있었다. 송팀장은 오늘 일과에 대해 경영진께 뒤늦은 보고를 한다며 자리를 비우고 없었다.
“오늘 오후에 마담 소피를 공항으로 마중 나가는 것은 윤희씨가 사장님 기사와 함께 가고, 계약 조인식 때 탁상용 프랑스기와 태극기, 그리고 현수막도 준비됐고, 이건 성준씨가 총무팀과 함께 대회의실을 깨끗하게 꾸며주길 바라며, 그들이 도착하면 팀장님이 함께 수행하며 사장님실에서 최상무님과 함께 차를 한잔 하고, 간단한 오피스 투어(Office Tour) 후에 대회의실로 이동해서 계약 조인식을 한다. 그리고… 이때 기념사진 촬영은 홍보팀에서 준비해서 꼭 기사화 하기로 했고, 계약이 끝나고 역시 윤희씨가 마담 소피를 호텔로 모셔다 드렸다가 사무실로 돌아오면 우리 일은 끝나는 것이네. 그리고 저녁 7시에 한정식집에서 만찬을 하는데, 이때 참석범위는 사장님과 임원들, 그리고 송팀장님이 함께하며….”
갑자기 신대리는 쓴 웃음을 지었다. 결국 이 모든 일을 진행한 자신보다도 윗 사람들과 함께하는 만찬에는 대리의 신분인 자신이 참석할 수 없고 송팀장이 대표한다는 것에 서운함이 스쳐 지나갔다. 그러나 그것도 잠시뿐, 신대리는 자신의 노력을 언젠가는 알아줄 때가 올 것임을 항상 믿어 의심치 않았다. 행사 체크 리스트(Check List)를 보며 하나씩 점검해본 결과 모든 준비는 다 되어 있었다. 이제는 정식 계약식만이 남아 있었다.
“자 다들 알겠지? 우리가 9개월 간 고생한 보람이 드디어 결실을 맺는 날이 왔다. 오늘 하루 한번만 더 수고하자. 비록 만찬에는 참석하지 못하지만 우리도 끝나고 우리들만의 파티를 하자고.”
“네, 그럼 우리 모처럼 회사 근처를 벗어나 보면 어떨까요?”
조윤희의 의견에 박성준이 좋다며 말을 이었다.
“우리도 한번 강남으로 진출해서, 오늘 화끈하게 놀아보죠~!”
박성준의 활기찬 목소리에 모두들 좋다며 찬성을 표하고, 오늘은 정시에 퇴근해서 강남에서 그들만의 회식을 하기로 약속하였다. 그리고 각자 주어진 일을 위해 제자리로 돌아간 그들은 스케쥴을 재차 확인하고 점검하며, 전화기를 내려놓지 못한 채 분주한 오전을 보냈다.
M&C 계약 조인식은 신대리의 체크 리스트와 한치의 오차도 없이 진행되었다. 그나마 계약서 싸인 후 기념촬영할 때 신대리도 박성준의 등떠밈에 마지못해 제일 뒷줄에 서서 결국 사진 속 인물들 중의 하나가 될 수 있었다. 그는 사진기의 플래시가 터질 때마다 마치 브로드웨이 데뷔에 성공한 신인배우에게 쏟아지는 찬사들이 모두 그 하나만을 위해 준비된 것처럼 가슴이 뭉클해졌다. 그는 눈 부신 플래시 빛에 간신히 눈을 뜨며 순간순간 투영되어 떠오르는 그 간의 고생을 한 순간이라도 놓치지 않으려는 듯 한껏 밝은 미소를 지었다. 몇 장의 사진 촬영은 매우 짧은 시간이었지만 신대리는 거의 2년이 지난 것 같은 느낌이었다.
모든 일정이 순조롭게 끝나고 강남역에서 함께 뭉친 그들은 즐거운 시간을 보내면서 그간의 고생을 맘껏 날려 보내며 스스로를 위안했다. 그러나 신대리는 마음 속으로 즐거울 수가 없었다. 팀원들에게 얘기하지 못한 비밀을 이제는 털어 놓을 때가 왔기 때문이다. 2차로 나이트 클럽에 춤추러 가자는 박성준의 제의를 거절하고 신대리는 조용한 바(Bar)로 자리를 옮겼다.
“대리님, 오늘 같은 날 갑자기 왜 이리 심각하시죠?”
박성준이 여느 때와는 틀린 신대리가 이상하다는 듯이 물었다.
“우리 일단 한잔씩 들자. 다들 수고 많았고, 우리 모두는 축하 받을 자격이 있다. 우리들 모두를 위하여, 건배~”
신대리의 건배 제의와 함께 독한 위스키를 스트레이트로 한잔 가득 목으로 넘기고는 약속이나 했듯이 인상을 찌푸리며 과일안주 하나를 가득 베어 문 그들을 바라보며, 신대리는 다시 한번 한 잔 가득 씩 술을 따라주었다. 그리고는 또 다시 스트레이트로 한 잔을 깨끗이 비운 뒤에야 약간의 뜸을 들이며 미안한 감정으로 어렵게 말을 꺼냈다.
“사실 이 얘기를 너희들에게 미리 해주었어야 하는데, 미쳐 말을 못해서 미안하다.”
조윤희와 박성준은 갑자기 심상치 않은 느낌에 자리를 당겨 앉으며 무슨 일인지 주의를 기울였다.
“다음 주, 그러니까 10월 1일자로 나는 다시 마케팅 이팀장 밑으로 들어간다. 두 사람은 계속 여기 사업개발팀에서 다른 브랜드들을 검토할 것이며, 나는 M&C 마케팅 BM으로 자리를 옮기게 되었다.”
순간 청천벽력 같은 소리에 조윤희와 박성준은 말문이 막혀 말을 잇지 못했다. 잠시 동안의 침묵이 있은 후에 박성준이 술 한잔을 단 숨에 들이킨 후 말했다.
“그러니까 대리님이 배반 때리겠다 이거군요? 우리 함께 하기로 했던 거 아닌가요? 대리님만 간다고요? 어떻게 이럴 수가 있죠?”
박성준은 매우 화가 났다. 계약이 체결되면 신대리와 함께 마케팅부에서 다시 일할 것이라는 꿈이 한 순간에 무너지고 말았기 때문이다. 그는 그 동안 신대리에게 속았다는 생각에 강한 배신감을 느꼈다.
“내가 애써 변명은 하지 않을게. 단지 나도 처음엔 너도 함께 가기를 바랬다는 것만 믿어줘. 그런데 일이 내 뜻대로 되지 않았어. 누군 이팀장 밑에 나 혼자 다시 들어가고 싶겠니? 난 독립적인 팀이 구성되길 희망했는데, 경영진에서 아직 시기상조라며 당장은 이팀장이 M&C를 맡는 것으로 결론을 내려버렸어. 그런 상황에서 네가 함께 간다고 좋을 일도 아닐 거야. 사업개발팀도 윤희씨 혼자서 송팀장님을 감당하기 힘들 것이고, 네가 윤희씨와 함께 하며 좀 기다려 주길 바란다.”
“아니 이놈의 회사는 어떻게 이팀장 같은 사람에게 이런 중요한 브랜드를 맡길 수가 있데요? 참내 한심하다 한심해….”
어느 정도 술기운이 오른 박성준은 이젠 화살을 이팀장에게 돌려 욕설을 퍼부우며 술을 마셔대기 시작했다. 조윤희는 이미 이런 일이 올 것을 예상했다는 듯이 담담하게 받아 들이는 것 같았다.
“대리님, 그간 참 힘들었지만 즐거웠어요. 꼭 마케팅부에서 M&C를 성공시켜 주세요. 저도 직접 해보고 싶었지만, 마케팅 경험도 없고 저는 안될 줄 알았어요. 어쨌든 대리님이라도 우리를 대표해서 그간 우리의 고생이 헛되지 않게 해주시길 바랄게요.”
조윤희는 여전히 착한 마음처럼 그 말 또한 고왔다. 신대리는 미안하고 고맙다는 인사와 함께 반드시 다시 만날 것이라는 말을 남기며 조윤희와 잔을 부딪쳤다. 박성준은 홧김에 쉬지 않고 계속 독한 술을 여러 잔 들이마시더니 어느새 탁자에 고개를 파묻고 잠이 들어 버렸다.
신대리와 조윤희는 남은 술을 다 마실 때까지 많은 얘기를 나눴다. 그러나 조윤희는 별로 말을 많이 하지 않았다. 계속 잘 알겠다고 되풀이하며 너무 걱정하지 말라며 오히려 신대리를 위안했다. 그렇게 양주 한 병을 다 비운 후에야 그들은 자리에서 일어났다. 벌써 자정이 지난 시간이었다. 박성준을 억지로 깨우고 간신히 택시를 태워 보낸 후에 신대리와 조윤희는 편의점에서 따뜻한 캔커피를 마시며 찬 바람에 애써 술을 깨우려 하였다.
두사람은 더 이상 할말도 없이 우두커니 그냥 서 있기만 했다. 둘은 뭐라 말길이 떨어지지 않는 것처럼 발길도 떨어지지가 않았다. 일산 쪽에 사는 신대리가 부른 택시가 5분내로 온다는 연락이 온 것을 확인한 후에야, 조윤희는 집이 가까우니 걱정 말라는 말만 남기며 뛰어 가듯이 지나가는 택시를 잡아 타려고 하였다. 순간 신대리는 그녀의 손을 잡아 댕기며 한껏 그녀를 품에 안았다. 아무런 말도 필요 없었다. 떨리는 가슴에 숨막히는 정적 속에서 마치 시간이 멈춰있는 듯 가늘게 떠는 그녀의 어깨의 미동만이 가슴으로 전해지고 있을 뿐이었다. 콜택시가 도착했다는 전화벨이 울릴 때까지 그 길고도 짧았던 시간은 영원한 이별을 고하는 연인들처럼 안타까웠다.

Royalties were calculated on 90% of sales rather than the full amount, effectively reducing royalties by 10%.
On the last week of September, as an unseasonal heatwave reminiscent of summer clung stubbornly to the skies, the visit of M&C’s licensing director, Madame Sophie, had the business development team bustling from early morning. Assistant Manager Shin meticulously reviewed the day’s plans and delegated tasks to the team members. Team Leader Song was absent, busy delivering a delayed report to senior management.
“In the afternoon, Yoon-hee, you’ll head to the airport with the company driver to greet Madame Sophie. For the signing ceremony, French and Korean flags and a banner have been prepared. Sung-jun, please work with the general affairs team to tidy up the conference room. Once they arrive, the team leader will accompany them for tea with Executive Vice President Choi in the president’s office, followed by a brief office tour before proceeding to the conference room for the signing ceremony. PR will handle commemorative photos and ensure they’re published. After the signing, Yoon-hee, please escort Madame Sophie to her hotel before returning to the office. Lastly, there’s a dinner at a traditional Korean restaurant at 7 PM, attended by the president, executives, and Team Leader Song.”
Assistant Manager Shin gave a wry smile. Despite all his efforts, he wouldn’t attend the celebratory dinner, as his position didn’t warrant an invitation. Team Leader Song would represent him instead. Still, Shin consoled himself with the belief that his hard work would one day be recognized. After meticulously reviewing the event checklist, he confirmed that everything was in place. All that remained was the formal signing ceremony.
“Alright, everyone, today is the day we finally reap the rewards of our nine months of hard work. Let’s give it our all one last time. Even though we won’t be at the dinner, let’s have our own celebration afterward!”
“How about going somewhere outside the office for a change?” Yoon-hee suggested.
Sung-jun agreed enthusiastically. “Let’s hit Gangnam and party hard tonight!”
Their spirited proposal was met with unanimous approval. They promised to finish work on time and hold their celebration in Gangnam. For the rest of the morning, the team remained busy double-checking schedules, making calls, and ensuring every detail was covered.
The M&C contract signing ceremony proceeded flawlessly, thanks to Shin’s checklist. When it came time for the commemorative photo, Sung-jun nudged Shin to join, and he reluctantly stood in the back row, becoming one of the figures in the picture. As the camera flashes went off, Shin felt an overwhelming sense of pride, as if the applause of Broadway were directed solely at him. Each flash of light reflected the struggles he had endured, bringing a radiant smile to his face. Though the photo session lasted only moments, it felt like years to him.
After all the events concluded, the team gathered at Gangnam Station, where they celebrated, letting go of months of stress. Yet Shin couldn’t fully enjoy the moment. It was time to share a secret he had kept from the team. Declining Sung-jun’s suggestion for a second round at a nightclub, Shin suggested moving to a quiet bar.
“Assistant Manager, why so serious on a day like today?” Sung-jun asked, noticing Shin’s unusual demeanor.
“Let’s have a toast first. Everyone, you’ve worked so hard. Here’s to all of us!”
With his toast, Shin downed a glass of strong whiskey straight, grimacing as he bit into a piece of fruit. He poured another round for everyone, emptied his glass again, and then, after a pause, began speaking with a mix of regret and apology.
“I should’ve told you this earlier, but I couldn’t. I’m sorry.”
Yoon-hee and Sung-jun leaned in, sensing the gravity of the moment.
“Starting next week, October 1, I’ll be transferring back to Marketing under Team Leader Lee. You two will stay here in the business development team to continue working on other brands, while I’ll take on M&C as its BM.”
The news hit like a bolt of lightning. Yoon-hee and Sung-jun were too shocked to respond. After a moment of silence, Sung-jun downed his drink in one gulp and spoke.
“So, you’re abandoning us? We were supposed to stick together! Now you’re just leaving us behind? How could you do this?”
Sung-jun was furious. The dream of joining the marketing team with Shin had been crushed. He felt deeply betrayed.
“I won’t make excuses. Just believe me when I say I wanted you to come with me. But things didn’t go as I hoped. Management decided it was too soon to form an independent team and assigned M&C to Team Leader Lee. In this situation, bringing you along wouldn’t help. Yoon-hee needs you here to handle Team Leader Song. Please be patient.”
“How could this company entrust such an important brand to someone like Team Leader Lee? Unbelievable!” Sung-jun vented his frustration by cursing Team Leader Lee and drinking heavily. Yoon-hee, on the other hand, accepted the news calmly, as though she had anticipated it.
“Assistant Manager, it’s been tough, but I’ve enjoyed working with you. Please make M&C a success in Marketing. I wish I could’ve done it myself, but I lack the experience. At least you’ll represent us and ensure our efforts weren’t in vain.”
Her kind words touched Shin. He clinked glasses with her, expressing his gratitude and promising they would meet again. Meanwhile, Sung-jun drank himself into a stupor, eventually passing out with his head on the table.
Shin and Yoon-hee stayed behind, finishing the bottle while reminiscing. Yoon-hee spoke little, repeating that she understood and urging Shin not to worry. After emptying the bottle, they rose to leave. It was past midnight. They woke Sung-jun and sent him off in a taxi before grabbing warm canned coffee from a convenience store to sober up in the cold night air.
Standing in silence, they found themselves unable to part. When Shin’s taxi arrived, Yoon-hee reassured him she would be fine and hailed a cab for herself. But as she moved away, Shin grabbed her hand and pulled her into an embrace. No words were exchanged. In the suffocating stillness, the faint tremor of her shoulders spoke volumes. The spell was broken only by the buzz of Shin’s cab arriving, marking an end as poignant as a farewell between lovers destined to part.
