Battle of Perception 56. Business Trip Abroad (1) The Bologna Cosmoprof Fair ①]

Every spring, a globally significant cosmetics exhibition is held in Bologna, Italy. The Bologna Cosmoprof Fair is an enormous beauty trade show that showcases everything related to beauty from head to toe, including raw materials, packaging, and accessories for the cosmetics industry worldwide.

Although luxury brand booths are absent, the fair provides access to high-quality technologies (such as raw materials) and packaging solutions supplied to luxury brands. Additionally, it offers an opportunity to discover innovative and creative products from different countries, which are often difficult to come across elsewhere. These insights help generate new ideas and concepts for future product development.

As a result, marketing, design, R&D, and packaging development team leaders typically visit Cosmoprof annually, each accompanied by one or two team members. For this year’s event, M&C TFT members, including Director Min, were selected as department representatives and granted a week-long business trip to Italy.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Team Leader Shin contacted Michelli in Paris and arranged a meeting with the M&C headquarters while en route to Italy. Although he had already received email confirmation for the M&C design images, he wanted to personally present the beautifully crafted mockups with confidence. Additionally, he aimed to establish a structured process for collaboration with the Paris headquarters in preparation for the product launch.

Michelli agreed that it was a great idea and arranged a meeting with Madame Sophie, the Global Licensing Director of M&C Paris headquarters. While Shin regretted that his team members couldn’t accompany him, he was thrilled about his first-ever trip to France and Italy.

The long-talked-about Bologna Cosmoprof Fair lived up to its reputation—it was truly an experience where “seeing is believing.” The vast exhibition halls were overwhelming, with over 1,300 participating companies from the global beauty and cosmetics industry. The fair also attracted an astonishing 140,000 visitors, including professionals like Team Leader Shin and his colleagues.

On the first day, Shin explored the packaging section with the design and development team members. However, as Seo from the design team and Kim from the packaging development team became deeply engaged in technical discussions at various booths, Shin eventually broke off from the group to focus on identifying new ideas relevant to M&C.

That evening, the group gathered for dinner and shared insights from their day at the fair. Each department reported on findings aligned with their expertise—R&D focused on raw materials and formulations, the design/packaging team examined containers and packaging solutions, and Beauty Researcher Deputy Manager Jung visited specialized makeup color booths. When it was Shin’s turn, he shared information specifically related to M&C.

“I toured the packaging booths today and managed to take photos of a uniquely designed eyeshadow container. It might not be immediately applicable, but it could be a great reference for future product designs. Also, I found a suitable container for our makeup base and foundation—it’s a French PE tube-type with an oval shape. If we add a silver spray finish, it will align well with the tone and manner of M&C’s design. Seo and Kim, I’d like you to revisit the booth tomorrow to review the design from a technical perspective, and if it looks good, proceed with negotiations. Additionally, Jung, I’d like to visit Intercos tomorrow with you and Deputy Manager Nam from R&D to finalize key decisions on color direction right there on the spot.”

Shin also introduced other eye-catching packaging designs and unique set cases he had discovered. Sharing daily findings like this helped bridge the gap between different perspectives across departments. It also allowed the team to cover areas they hadn’t individually explored, making the following days at the fair even more productive. – To be continued –
