The transaction terms demanded by the Northeast China distributors were so unreasonable that there seemed to be no room whatsoever for reconsideration. In fact, I even thought it would be wiser not to proceed at all. If we entered into business under such conditions, the company might certainly achieve rapid sales growth in the short term, but in the long run, we would only be nurturing parasites that would steadily eat away at profitability and eventually become a major headache.
Still, we could not simply abandon the opportunity altogether.
I instructed Manager Song to analyze the conditions proposed by the distributors in detail and run various simulations. Surprisingly, the analysis revealed an interesting fact: from a long-term perspective, their demands were not entirely impossible for us to accommodate. If both sides made certain concessions through renegotiation, there might still be a slim possibility that an agreement could be reached.
So this time, I instructed Executive Director Jang to invite Director Xu to Qingdao. I wanted her to see the company with her own eyes, while we used the advantage of our home ground to explain our company and products in greater depth and slowly discuss the contract conditions.
My reasoning was simple. If we could first persuade Director Xu, who genuinely wanted to work with our company, then ideally she herself would later persuade the distributors under her organization without the company needing to intervene directly.
Admiral Yi Sun-sin, one of Korea’s greatest military heroes, achieved an extraordinary record of twenty-three victories in twenty-three battles largely because he carefully selected battlefields where victory was possible. There is an old saying that if a battle cannot be won, one must move the battlefield to a place where victory is achievable.
Negotiation works the same way.
Since we had already failed to produce results after traveling to Harbin once before, I believed it would be strategically advantageous to bring Director Xu into our territory instead. If she toured our company, met several Korean executives in person, and listened to professional explanations regarding our products and research technologies, then her vague impressions about the company would naturally evolve into genuine trust.
However, my expectations turned out slightly differently.
Executive Director Jang informed me that not only Director Xu, but also four managerial-level distributors under her organization wished to visit the company together. Without hesitation, he booked airplane tickets for all five of them.
I opposed the idea as soon as I learned about it, but by then it was already difficult to reverse the arrangements.
The reason for my opposition was not merely because the airfare and accommodation costs for five people amounted to several million won. More importantly, I feared that if they arrived united as a single group, it would become extremely difficult for us to maintain the upper hand in negotiations.
Yet Executive Director Jang reassured me confidently, saying that this time he himself would personally lead the negotiations and that there was nothing to worry about. According to him, the very fact that they were willing to visit Qingdao already indicated that their minds had largely shifted in our favor.
Since I had always believed Executive Director Jang to be highly experienced in such matters, I entrusted the matter to him while feeling both reassured and uneasy at the same time.
But that was my misjudgment.
About a week later, I was unable to come to the office because I had become seriously ill from exhaustion after several consecutive weekend workshops. Around evening, after spending the entire day drifting in and out of consciousness under the effects of medicine and fatigue, I received a phone call from Executive Director Jang.
“Director Shin, I apologize for calling so late while you’re resting.”
His characteristically slow and slightly high-pitched voice flowed from the other end of the line.
“It’s almost time to leave work. What’s going on?”
Since Executive Director Jang rarely called me directly, I asked cautiously with an uneasy feeling.
“Well, something urgent came up. I suddenly have to leave for a business trip to Henan Province tomorrow. A promising new distributor candidate appeared there, and if I don’t go immediately, we might lose the opportunity. Since you weren’t in the office today, I already booked the morning flight in advance. I’ll organize the business trip approval documents after I return.”
“I see. You’ll have a difficult trip early tomorrow morning. Please take care of your health and travel safely.”
I let out a sigh of relief and approved the trip.
But no sooner had I finished speaking than the next words left me stunned.
“By the way, tomorrow five distributors from Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces, including Director Xu, will be visiting the company. Unfortunately, because I suddenly have to leave for Henan Province, I’d like you to handle the contract negotiations with the Northeast distributors.”
“What? What are you talking about? This is something you’ve been preparing for all this time. How can you suddenly bring this up now, at the last minute?”
“Entering the Northeast market is important. We can’t keep delaying it indefinitely.”
“But Director Moon has already submitted his resignation and is barely functioning at work anymore. What exactly am I supposed to do alone?”
“That’s precisely why I’m asking you, Director Shin. I must go to Henan, so this time I hope you can handle it successfully.”
“…Understood.”
After hanging up the phone, I sat in silence for a long while.
This was clearly Executive Director Jang’s counterattack against my criticism regarding his failed negotiations during the Harbin business trip. Taking advantage of the fact that I had taken a rare day off, he intentionally handed me a massive responsibility without giving me any time to prepare.
It was practically his way of saying:
“Instead of sitting behind a desk telling others what to do, why don’t you try handling it yourself?”
At the same time, I decided to view it as a test of whether I, as the general manager, was truly capable of handling sales negotiations personally.
Feeling as though a fire had suddenly broken out beneath my feet, I immediately began reviewing their travel schedule. I questioned Executive Director Jang about their arrival and departure times and whether there might be hidden intentions behind all five of them traveling together.
But apart from the information that they would arrive around three o’clock in the afternoon, I received nothing further from him.
Recognizing exactly what Executive Director Jang was trying to do, I concluded that there was no longer anything I could expect from him and simply allowed him to leave for his business trip.
Fortunately, however, since the visitors from Heilongjiang Province were scheduled to arrive in the afternoon, I still believed I had enough time the following morning to prepare myself adequately.
