The next morning, as soon as I arrived at the office, I called Director Moon into my office. Although he had already submitted his resignation, he was still in the process of wrapping up his duties, saying that he would help hand over responsibilities to his replacement before departing for Australia. While he was no longer actively involved in day-to-day operations, I had no choice but to seek him out because I desperately needed even the slightest bit of information.
“Director Moon, did you know that the people from the Northeast are coming today?”
“Yes. I heard about it yesterday through Executive Director Jang.”
“Because Executive Director Jang suddenly left on a business trip, I ended up having to handle the negotiations myself. Since you already met them during your trip, I need your help.”
“Yes, understood. But Director Shin… regarding Executive Director Jang, I think I need to say this before I leave the company. He deliberately created a fake appointment today to avoid being here. He even told me yesterday that he wanted to see how well Director Shin could handle everything alone. Since I’m leaving anyway, let me say this one last time—please be careful of Executive Director Jang.”
Director Moon spoke in his characteristic hesitant tone, slowly and quietly.
I had already suspected as much regarding Executive Director Jang, but hearing it directly from Director Moon made me even more displeased. Executive Director Jang had personally arranged for Director Xu and the distributors to visit that very day, yet instead of taking responsibility for solving the difficult situation that he and Director Moon themselves had complicated, he had chosen to disappear and use the situation as an opportunity to throw me into chaos regardless of what happened to the company.
I asked Director Moon for the names, ages, career histories, and past sales records of the five visitors expected that day. Yet despite having personally traveled all the way to Harbin and met them face to face, he could not even accurately remember all of their names.
Instead, he casually responded that such things could gradually be learned through future meetings.
I found both Executive Director Jang and Director Moon utterly frustrating in the careless way they handled their work. I immediately instructed him to call Director Xu and gather every possible detail at once. How could negotiations ever succeed when they had gone on a business trip without even understanding the most basic information about the people they were negotiating with?
About an hour later, Director Moon returned with brief profiles. They were not nearly as detailed as I wanted, but at least they contained some basic information.
Most of them were in their mid-to-late forties and had stable careers with many years of experience in the cosmetics industry. However, just as Executive Director Jang had said, their sales performances were not especially impressive, nor did they appear likely to grow significantly in the future.
At that moment, I finally understood why Director Xu still had not been promoted to vice president level within her former company.
Still, even those sales figures represented considerable amounts from our perspective, given that our own company’s sales were still less than half the size of our competitor’s.
Throughout the entire morning, I carefully devised strategies for dealing with them. I knew I needed to make this deal succeed if possible, but after reviewing their performance levels, I also concluded that they were not necessarily organizations we absolutely had to recruit at the cost of accepting unreasonable conditions.
No matter how much Executive Director Jang might mock me later, I resolved that if the negotiations reached the worst-case scenario, I would walk away without signing a contract.
Even so, I still lacked sufficient information.
Strategically, I decided not to meet all of them at once. Instead, I planned to first meet Director Xu alone and then gather everyone together the following day. Since she was both the most cooperative figure and the leader of the group, I intended to first communicate my intentions directly to her while simultaneously assessing the thoughts and circumstances of the other side in advance.
Unfortunately, heavy snowfall in Harbin delayed their flight that very day, and I was unable to meet even Director Xu. With no alternative, I had no choice but to postpone everything until the following day.
How could anyone possibly conduct successful negotiations without even understanding the basic information of the opposing side?
One must understand their circumstances, analyze their position, determine why they willingly traveled all the way from Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces down to Qingdao, and anticipate whether they may be hiding additional intentions. Only then can one prepare alternatives for every possible scenario.
Until now, our sales department had been so desperate to secure a contract with Director Xu’s organization for the sake of immediate sales growth that they had unintentionally created the impression that we were being dragged around by the other side. As a result, they may have only emboldened the distributors further.
The balance of power had already become obvious. It was clear who currently held the sword by the handle.
So how could I reverse the situation and negotiate under conditions favorable to us?
I thought.
And thought again.
And kept thinking.
Then, while reviewing the limited information I had managed to gather and reflecting carefully on the overall situation, I realized something important: their own circumstances were not particularly favorable either. After all, the fact that they had traveled such a great distance from Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces all the way to Qingdao clearly proved that they desperately wanted to do business with us.
And if that was the case, then it was finally my turn to attack.
With the mindset that our company could easily choose not to sign contracts with organizations of their size and simply send them back home empty-handed, I resolved to seize the psychological high ground and enter the negotiations from a position of superiority.
