다음 날 아침, 나는 양 과장과 함께 쉬 부총의 사무실을 찾았다. 그곳엔 쉬 부총은 없었지만 그녀의 남편이 나를 기다리고 있었다. 그는 아내 대신 그동안 잔일을 이어 가고 있었지만, 전략적인 큰 결정을 내릴 수 있는 위치는 아니었다. 약 삼십 분간 나는 동북 지역에서의 어려움에 대한 불만 섞인 이야기를 들어주고 나서 그에게 말했다.
“그 모든 것을 해결하기 위해 지금 제가 온 것이 아닙니까? 그러기 위해서는 제가 오늘 꼭 쉬 부총을 만나야만 합니다. 그러니 그녀에게 안내해 주세요.”
나는 남편이 요구하는 사항을 다 들어주겠다는 마음으로 그에게 진심을 전하려 애썼다. 비록 통역을 통해 전달되는 것이었지만, 그는 나의 표정과 목소리를 통해 나의 진심을 느꼈는지, 드디어 쉬 부총에 대해 말을 꺼냈다.
“쉬 부총은 근 일 년간 영업을 하느라 몸도 마음도 너무 힘들어져서 병이 난 게 사실입니다. 거짓말이 아니에요. 한동안 병원에 입원했다가 지금은 퇴원하여 집에서 쉬고 있으니, 집에 가면 만날 수 있을 겁니다.”
“그럼 어서 함께 가시죠.”
나는 그를 재촉하여 집으로 갔지만 그녀는 없었다. 남편은 밖에서 쉬 부총과 오랜 시간 통화를 하고 와서는 난처한 표정을 지으며 죄송하다며 말을 했다.
“집에 있었는데, 몸이 안 좋아져서 병원에 갔나 봅니다. 오늘은 만날 수 없겠네요.”
낌새를 보니 병원에 갔다는 건 핑계이고, 그녀는 나를 만나고 싶지 않아 뒤늦게 자리를 피한 게 틀림없었다.
“그럼 제가 병문안도 겸해서 병원으로 가겠습니다. 먼 칭다오에서 여기까지 왔는데 꼭 쉬 부총을 만나고 싶습니다.”
그러나 소용이 없었다. 쉬 부총은 핸드폰 전원을 끊은 채 이미 사라져 버린 것이다. 남편은 어떻게든 이 난국을 해결해 보려고 하여 이곳까지 나를 오게 하였지만, 그녀는 나의 기대와 남편의 바람마저 져버리고 말았다. 이렇게 되면 나는 더 이상 할 얘기도 없었다. 나는 소득도 없는 하얼빈 출장을 마무리하며, 남편에게 최후의 통첩을 했다.
“춘절 이전까지 쉬 부총이 대답을 안 하면 우리와 더 이상 거래를 하지 않겠다는 걸로 알겠습니다. 따라서 모든 대리상들에게 곧 다가오는 올해의 일 년치 사무실 및 창고 임대료를 지급해 줄 수가 없으며, 동북 지역을 위해 채용한 미용강사 두 명은 퇴직 처리 할 수밖에 없습니다. 이 주일 남았습니다. 그때까지 기다리겠습니다.”
나는 더 이상 미련이 없다는 듯 냉담하게 돌아섰다. 총경리가 이곳까지 찾아왔는데도 일부러 자리를 피한 쉬 부총이 괘씸하기도 하였지만, 이대로 연락도 안 되는 사람을 믿고 앞으로 일 년의 투자를 할 수가 없었기 때문이다.
그러나 결국 쉬 부총은 춘절이 지나도록 아무런 연락도 하지 않았다가, 2월이 다 지나갈 즈음에 뜬금없이 홀로 회사를 찾아와서 더 이상 거래를 지속할 수 없다며, 자신이 가지고 있는 제품의 반품을 요구했다. 모두 삼백만 위안이나 되는 금액이었다.
나는 그녀를 다시 한 번 설득하였지만, 소용이 없었다. 만 일 년 만에 같은 자리에서 다시 만난 그녀는 과거 나를 처음 만났을 때 자신감 넘쳤던 쉬 부총이 아니었다. 피로와 스트레스로 몸과 마음이 모두 다치고 부쩍 늙어 버린 중년의 한 여성일 뿐이었다.
그녀의 말에 의하면, 그동안 장 상무와 뜻이 맞지 않아 고군분투(孤軍奮鬪)하였던 자신이 부총으로서 미엔쯔(面子, 체면)가 너무 상했기 때문이라 했다. 회사로부터 제대로 지원을 받지 못해서, 아랫사람으로부터 존중도 제대로 받지 못하게 된 그녀는 미엔쯔 때문에 고개를 들 수가 없다고 하니, 나는 더 이상 그녀를 잡을 수가 없었다.(계속)
The next morning, Manager Yang and I went to Deputy General Manager Xu’s office. Xu was not there, but her husband was waiting for me. Although he had been taking care of routine matters on her behalf, he was not in a position to make any major strategic decisions. After listening for about thirty minutes to his complaints about the difficulties they had been facing in the Northeast region, I finally said to him,
“Isn’t that exactly why I came here? But in order to resolve all these issues, I must meet Deputy General Manager Xu today. Please take me to her.”
I spoke as sincerely as I could, hoping to assure him that I was willing to accommodate all of his requests. Although my words were conveyed through an interpreter, he must have sensed my sincerity from my expression and tone of voice. At last, he began to speak openly about Xu.
“The truth is, Deputy General Manager Xu has been under tremendous physical and emotional strain after spending nearly a year building the business. She really became ill. I’m not making excuses. She was hospitalized for a while and has since been discharged. She’s resting at home now, so you should be able to see her there.”
“Then let’s go right away.”
I urged him to leave immediately, and we headed to her house. However, she was nowhere to be found. After spending quite some time talking with her on the phone outside, her husband returned wearing an embarrassed expression.
“I’m sorry. She was at home, but apparently she wasn’t feeling well and has gone to the hospital. I’m afraid you won’t be able to see her today.”
From the way things unfolded, I was convinced that going to the hospital was merely an excuse. She simply didn’t want to meet me and had slipped away after learning that I was coming.
“Then I’ll go to the hospital to visit her. I’ve come all the way from Qingdao because I truly want to meet Deputy General Manager Xu.”
But it was useless. Xu had already disappeared after turning off her mobile phone. Her husband had tried everything he could to resolve the situation and had even brought me all the way there, but she had disappointed not only me but also her own husband.
At that point, there was nothing more for me to say. As I prepared to end my fruitless business trip to Harbin, I delivered my final message to her husband.
“If Deputy General Manager Xu does not respond before the Chinese New Year, I will consider that she no longer wishes to continue doing business with us. Under those circumstances, we will not be able to pay this year’s office and warehouse rent for our distributors in the Northeast region, nor will we be able to retain the two beauty instructors we hired specifically for that market. We have two weeks left. I’ll wait until then.”
I turned away coldly, as though I had no lingering attachment. I was deeply offended that Xu had deliberately avoided meeting me despite the fact that I had traveled there personally as the company’s General Manager. More importantly, I simply could not justify investing another year’s worth of resources in someone who refused even to communicate with us.
In the end, however, Deputy General Manager Xu never contacted us before the Chinese New Year. It was not until the end of February that she unexpectedly came to our company alone. She informed me that she could no longer continue our business relationship and demanded that we take back all of the products she still had in inventory.
The total value of the products amounted to three million yuan.
I tried once again to persuade her, but it was no use. When I met her again in the same place exactly one year after our previous meeting, she was no longer the confident Deputy General Manager Xu I had first known. Instead, she was simply a middle-aged woman whose body and spirit had been worn down by exhaustion and relentless stress, making her appear noticeably older than before.
According to her, she had spent the past year fighting a lonely battle because she could not see eye to eye with Executive Director Zhang. As Deputy General Manager, she felt that she had completely lost her mianzi (面子)—her personal dignity, reputation, and standing. Without sufficient support from the company, she had also lost the respect of her subordinates. She told me that her damaged mianzi had left her unable to hold her head up with confidence.
At that point, I could no longer persuade her to stay.
